    One thing I never noticed before, when Karl Franz cries, “For Sigmar!” Right before the end, the sun behind him makes it look like he has a halo. Very nice touch.

    Ghal Maraz, also known as skull-splitter in dwarven dialect, is one of the most potent magical weapons in warhammer fantasy. Dwarfs can't really even make weapons like that anymore because winds of magic have changed during the last couple millenia, and there simply isn't enough magic in the world for runesmiths to create such artifacts anymore.

    • @OleHerland
      @OleHerland  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Oh wow, your comment was a treat to read. It just got more and more epic. That is wild to think about, and makes The Warhammer even cooler!

  • @requiemlul3140
    @requiemlul3140 ปีที่แล้ว +32

    3:55 yes, that is in fact THE Warhammer Fantasy. It’s actually called Gal Maraz. It was the Weapon of the God Sigmar when he was still mortal and it’s basically the staff of office for the Emperor, even when they don’t fight with a hammer.
    Fun fact: most of this is rendered in the game cutscene and the way they move and attack in the battle is actually what it looks like in the game. In fact almost everything, especially the wide shots look straight out of the game.
    These gryphons don’t fall because the armor is too heavy, at least that’s what I assume. Also, in that state ranged weaponry becomes a huge threat.

    • @Zalmari
      @Zalmari ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Those are actually Demigryph Knights, Demigryphs have no wings.
      What Karl Franz riders later on to fight the Wyvern is your typical Gryphon

    • @cegesh1459

      Exactly. Ghal Maraz the warhammer, was a gift from the Dwarves to Sigmar himself.

      Thank you so much for your comment!!! Really cool that he has the hammer, and that was the Weapon of the god Sigmar! 😱
      Also, this is how it looks in the game?! That is epic, can't wait to try it out 🤩
      Learning so much here, I love it. I feel so lucky that can have so much fun making the videos, and then learn so much afterwards from amazing comments like this 🥳

    The Gryph cavalry you say at 6:45 are not Gryphs like Karl Franz Gryph at the end, those are Demigryphs, they dont have wings, so they only serve as a cavalry unit.

    • @OleHerland
      @OleHerland  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I see! It makes a lot of sense that they can't fly if they don't have wings! 🙈Wings or no wings, they look epic!

    "Mighty is Sigmar, who saves a Dwarf king from dishonour,
    How can I reward him?
    A hammer of war, a hammer of Iron, which fell from the sky with two tongues of fire,
    From the Forge of the Gods,
    Worked by Runesmiths,
    Ghal Maraz its name, the Splitter of Skulls."
    From the legend of Sigmar.

    The Empire is inspired by the ancestor of Germany, called the Holy Roman Empire (HRE). The HRE was dissolved more or less when Napoleon succesfully invaded it. Modern Germany was officially formed around 60 years after those events, so only 150 years ago. Rex is King in latin.
    Only Karl Franz's mount was a griffon in this trailer. The monstruous cavalry unit that charged the orcs from the woods was made of creatures called "demigryphs". They're way smaller, and don't have wings, so they can't fly.

    • @OleHerland
      @OleHerland  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh, I see! Learning a lot about the "real world" and the fantasy/total war world at the same time. Love it! :D
      Ah that is where Rex comes from, makes sense!
      Thank you for your comment, learning so much! :D

    Ghal maraz was the legendary hammer(and yes what the warhammer series named after) was by the greatest dwaven smiths to the first emperor of mankind Sigmar.
    who united all the human tribes within current empire, which was on brink of extinction and fought among themself.
    He united into the empire and brought lowly tribe and barbarian people into civilized, organized and trained warriors/soldiers.
    He lead and fought against the great norscan/chaos invasion while also ork invasions.
    Eventually when he died he became a workshipped god among a majority of the empire and is actually right now a god.
    In current setting, The Empire is the strongest and biggest nation in the warhammer world, especially among humans.
    While there are other human nations, some are under empire protection as vassals while others might be allies.
    They don’t come close to the empire itself.

  • @baronvonjerch
    @baronvonjerch ปีที่แล้ว +3

    If you are curious about Sigmar and how he founded the Empire, the Wizards and Warriors channel has a documentary titled "How Sigmar Won His Battles" which chronicles his life, the battles he fought and how he became the first Emperor.

  • @BriefMortal777
    @BriefMortal777 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The hammer is Ghal Maraz and was a gift to Sigmar Unberogen from the Dwarven High King following a battle they fought together against the Orcs (it is of course magic as fuck). It has subsequently become the badge of office for all subsequent Emperors. And yes it is THE warhammer.
    The first lot of gryphons were actually Demigryphs, smaller and wingless cousins of true gryphons, Karl Franz's mount Deathclaw is a true gryphon. The orc was riding a wyvern, Warhammer dragons are substantially larger and rarer than wyverns, for when you get to it there is a black dragon featured in the skaven trailer and a forest dragon in the Twisted and the Twilight trailer. Oh, and an undead dragon ridden by Mannfred von Carstein in some of the trailers

    That is the actual Warhammer. Fun fact: Warhammer 40k is only called Warhammer 40k because it was made as the science fiction spin-off of Warhammer. There's no famous warhammer in Warhammer 40k. Most of the famous weapons are swords, with a few spears and a lot of guns.

    The Empire in Warhammer Fantasy is based off of the HRE, so it's primarily german, however, some regions within the Empire have Polish influence like Ostland (Which I think means 'eastland' in german). However, other human nations exist, like Tilea, a very wealthy land of merchant princes and trade republics, known for it's innovation (it's renaissance Italy), Bretonnia, a corny Arthurian-themed Frenchstyle faction obsessed with the Lady of the Lake and Chivalry. And in 'europe' or in Warhammer terms 'The Old World' there's also Kislev led by the Ice Queen (it's Russia) and Norsca which is scandinavia, which you can probably guess is led by viking peoples. The Empire is just the strongest and most united out of them, Italy being fractured, France having no gunpowder weaponry, Kislev busy with other factions and being grumpy, Norsca having to raid for food and supplies due to their homelands harsh climate, and Estalia (Spain) having virtually no lore and just being a void of nothingness.

    • @Haxler8
      @Haxler8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Estalia thing hurts with how honest and real it is

    • @countspookula6398
      @countspookula6398 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Haxler8 Sadly, I find Estalia and Tilea to be more interesting and aestheticlly cooler than the Empire & Bretonnia. I love the conquistador style of Estalia.

    I'm just going to copy a wonderful comment under the original video by InchonDM. Really explains why I love this character so much.
    My favorite Karl Franz line from this trailer is actually the very first one. It's what sets him apart, and makes him the leader that men will follow into the screaming mouth of Hell--apart from the fact that they know that he will always be first into the fight.
    He may be Emperor, and Prince, and chosen of Sigmar. And yet.
    "I am Karl Franz. And I was born into this world just like you."

  • @Kroq-gar
    @Kroq-gar ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I honestly like Fantasy more than 40k. Mostly because the humans are a lot more relatable. Even Karl Franz literally says “I was born into this world, like you.” There is almost no space marine or custodies who says that. The Emperor most definitely doesn’t say that. Meanwhile Sigmar, who was once a man, ascended to god hood, was still a nice guy. Who understand mortal and accepts his godhood and isn’t like “I’m totally not a god.”

    3:03 the Holy Roman Empire which the Empire is Based on has a Kingly Title for its Emperors, King of the Romans (Rex Romanorum) this is given after the Emperor is Voted in by its Electors but hasn't been crowned as Emperor by the Pope yet,
    So its possible Karl Franz also gets the Title of King before his corronation and his Cape represents that having Rex Karl, King Karl instead of Imperator Karl, Emperor Karl.

    Emperor Karl-Franz I, of the House of Holswig-Schliestein, Grand Prince of the Reikland, Prince of Altdorf, Protector of the Empire, Defier of the Dark, Sigmar's Heir, Emperor Himself and Son of Emperors... to give his proper title.
    The Empire was founded by Sigmar, chieftain of the Unberogen people in what is now the Principality of the Reikland, who united twelve tribes of humans under his banner and, in alliance with the Dwarfs of the Karaz Ankor (the Dwarfen kingdoms), drove the Orcs and Goblins from the land to the wastelands far to the south. Sigmar himself was a lifelong friend of the Dwarfs, having saved the life of the Dwarf High King, Kurgan Ironbeard, and been gifted the rune-encrusted warhammer _Ghal Maraz_ -the Splitter of Skulls-as a reward. When Sigmar departed the world-and many believe that he ascended to join the gods of the Old World-the remaining chieftains of the tribes chose one from amongst their number to rule as first-amongst-equals. Their descendants would take the title of Elector Count, and each successive Emperor is selected from amongst their number by their vote.
    Karl-Franz is the Elector Count of the Reikland in addition to being Emperor, one of the (now eleven) grand provinces ruled over by the Elector Counts. The last two Emperors were his father, Luitpold I, and his grandfather, Wilhelm III, as the Empire has prospered under these Reikland Emperors. Karl-Franz inherited his father's lands and titles as Grand Prince of the Reikland at the age of 32, and was chosen to be Emperor soon after.

    1:02 The Empire is more or less the Holy Roman Empire of German Nation, which can be considered as early Germany.
    4:08 That is Ghal Maraz, the hammer Sigmar was gifted by the Dwarven High King. It is one of the most important status symbols of the Emperor. So it functions like a crown.
