Such a stellar version of this majestic tune. In fact , it's my favorite version. Nothing beats those Garcia/Hunter ballads. People who do not understand the Dead, do not understand the absolute beauty the band was able to achieve with tunes like this. Makes me cry every time. There is no band that sounds like this. They are utterly unique.
One consolation of being nearly 70, is the remembrance of a time when one could experience music that flowed unencumbered, from the very real and soulful spirit of the age in which we lived. I’m sad when I think about the youth of today, that haven’t a clue of the vast and powerful realms that tunes like this would transport us to. The music of today seems to keep the heart and mind expansion to a minimum. Today young people seem to have resigned themselves to a future filled with uncertainty and meaninglessness. I embrace my seniority, and look forward to a time when my journey in this realm has concluded, and opens the door to a majestic place where struggle, strife and anxiety have no quarter. ☮️
One of my favorite songs it sucks nobody, but one or two of my friends listens to the dead and if somebody see's me with a dead shirt they automatically think I do drugs they don't understand how a song can make u feel like it is yours and u can listen to it and feel sad and happy at the same time .
I've won over quite a few of my friends by spamming Facebook with The G.D. . Sooner or later they put on those f#@kin' little earbuds and sure enough they like The G.D. after all.
I agree some people don't feel soul and passion in songs. I guess it's a talent we have. You are very correct Jerry "lived" and his talent for delivering songs that are meant for people feeling same way . Their is a song for every occasion for sure.
This is my youngest sons favorite song. It is "our" song. He is 14. I love you James and happy at least 1 of my kids enjoys some of the music their crazy Mom listens to.

First time i saw The Dead they were playing on a flatbed truck on Haight, near the Straight Theater, couple' blocks up from GG Park. Charlie Musselwhite was on the bill that night...Man, it's tough being from then, now...Lovely version of one of their most evocative tunes. Thanks for posting it.
Hey there, fellow survivor. I was there that afternoon. No, not my "first time." But certainly a High Time for sure. Life seemed challenging back then but, in retrospect, it was pretty damned simple.

This song definitely reminds me of where I live. A yellow grass farming Valley in California right besides the Sierra Nevada mountains. So many GD songs bring back camping memories and driving up to lakes, black bears, and gigantic granite boulders. Now days I see it as my duty to provide these songs for my friends on my guitar.

This music takes you to a space where you know, really know, that there's no separation between you and experience. What you are aware of is yourself, it couldn't be more obvious. 😅
I saw them so many times '68-'70 when they were first performing this and trying to get those harmonies right and I LOVED every single version I ever heard. This song is filled with so much...
Funny how things are now. Nobody I know in my life listens to the Grateful Dead with the exception of one of my kids liking one song. Even the ones named after G.D. related ideas. Oh well. I feel a bit nostalgic and alone. LOVE this song.
Truly as lovely of a version as ever there was, and, another of countless examples of proof of how magnificent of an accompanying vocalist, Miss Donna Jean was because she just is perfect on this. It is really spectacular. Thank you.

what a beauty..thanks again chase. as for those with jerry guitar questions, I'm pretty sure he was still playing the Travis Bean in this period, hadn't ot the Wolf back yet. I actually think that was his sweetest tone ever with the Bean, had to do with the guitar, maybe even more to do with the real apparent ethereal state he was in at the time, around '77, to have made all this surreal music, vocally and on the guitar.
Happy April/2020! All! This month and year are historical times. So enjoy pot as much as you can now for this month specifically cuz its '420' everyday!
Hey y'all I would never EVER. Disrespect jerry !! NO one like him!! But man oh man go see the dead and co this summer !! My wife and I went to Pittsburgh at first I was like John friggen MAYER 😵 but then I seen them 👍🏽😜😱 blow my mind!! My kids wanna go this year too NICE! Love the dead for ever WHAT A HIGH TIME
I too am in the "I love John Mayer camp". I think he has the potential to totally re-create the Grateful Dead, hopefully for decades to come. Jerry's gone, it's pointless to lament that and to compare anyone to him. I've been to 9 Dead & Co. shows, at least one for each tour to date. I think Mayer is getting better & better at this. I also found that I like and appreciate his playing *even more* when I'm listening to recordings of the shows, even more than when at the shows themselves. I wonder if that might be because I like his playing more than his stage presence. Regardless, think he's doing great. Oteil too!
Yeah I had the exact same thought. Jesus. That was already 7 years ago the first time I saw Dead and Co. Mayer is cool for sure and really good in his role.
The only thing that bums me out is my 3 kids 1st concert was Dr. Hook I wish I wood have took them to c these guys...had I known what was gonna happen...RIP Jerry...
One of those that got away. It's always been a favorite and brings back really good memories of a well spent youth. But I never saw it live, along with St. Stephen a major regret. My 1st show was actually the night after this. By the way, it was May, not June.
You people that keep doggin Donna don't know what the fuck you are talking about. Everyone of these guys hit a wrong note periodically. I know. I was there. I was also there to witness Donna absolutely soar. So shut the fuck up about her. You make yourself sound kind of stupid.
wellinformed everyone misses a note now and then, but she butchered some stuff. Playing and Scarlet in particular. Now on the other hand, when she was merely harmonizing, she could be spot on, and mostly was fine in that role. When given the room to "solo" she was bad, reeeeeealy bad. That's my thought anyway
No question that Donna made difference. When she was good, she was really good. What I don't understand is how the rest of the band let her sing so off key on Playin', etc. Clearly, someone must have realized she needed a louder monitor or whatever. She knew how to sing on key. I wonder if when she did sing off key, it might be because she was trying too hard. It must have been a challenge to just stand up there during long, spacey Playin' instrumental jams, looking cool & cute, swaying to the music, waiting for your turn to sing. When your turn finally arrived... wammo! you belt out a super enthusiastic wail, but you're flat!
"don't be that way"...god, i haven't heard it for a longtime. i was the hippie that always did things my own wayin the '60s. far out huh? anyway, this is too laid back have not wanted to be this laid back in forty-five years!! other versions suit me right on! by.

just think about so much of your life was wasted doing trivial things when you could have been listening to the Grateful Dead.
