this song connects me to a state of peace that is indescribable. I can honestly go anywhere with this tune playing. This song should set the pace of everyday life. The instruments speak in voices that are unlike any other. No band ever will capture the serenity that the grateful dead did with this song. Dead for life.
***** Crap, the ancient Greeks missed it too. It's sort of unfathomable that they were able to somehow form the basis for Western Civilization without having heard this. I wonder how they did it?
Every time I hear this piece, I start seeing trails when I move my fingers around. The best tripping music ever made. Carries you along beautifully and keeps you mellow.
Grateful Dead Hour is where I first heard it too. Had the tape deck going, God bless me! Didn't really realize what an impeccable gem I'd caught until it seeped it's way in. About the second or third time this thing took hold of my girlfriend (no Deadhead at all) in a way I can't describe. She loved it and finally understood the band, particularly Garcia. An amazing performance. The whole show's available on the internet btw
Just god-damn gorgeous! @6:26 the whole jam changes. Phil is a monster. Saw the Dead many times between 78' and 91. My absolute favorite band. Music of the spheres.
This is one of the first tapes I ever got almost twenty years ago and it holds up pretty well I gotta say. The sound quality is impeccable. That jam is sleek as hell.
First time I heard this was on a borrowed tape of a Grateful Dead Hour, and its' molecules began to burrow their way into my being at once. In time, it would play over the P.A. at Jerry Garcia's public memorial in Golden Gate Park. I find it evocative of a drive into the infinite, albeit one of a grounded variety --four wheels on an immaculately paved road. Trivia: the "Wharf Rat" left out of the middle was its first live performance, and the DS reprise was followed by "Me and My Uncle"
I attended with an older head/friend who, each time they played a new song (and they broke out 5!) , he got so irate, yelling out "Play the old shit!!!" Little did he know how important those new tunes would become to the next gen heads. Cheers!
in Words? You need only a few to know what you are dealing with here. The first time you open the door for.. or sit down next to the 'right'..Californian -who just told you to come live with him ..'We have three houses.. we'll share everything. K?' You are experiencing what is contained in Dark Star or China Cat. You go straight to the heart of the Universe. You do not pass go. You lower your defenses and let the light in. You Love. You be loved.
I could see myself saying something about how the wharf rat cut out ruins the continuity and context of it all.. but really this is so much better.Thank you man, it's very much appreciated.
Far out spacy light show you have done. Lovely Trip Greateful Dead made Dark Stat in to, that day in N.Y. thank you Jerry Garcia and the rest of the band
so cool. I'm 16, and I'm the same way. I don't know many people our age that like this kind of music. nice to see that someone of my generation also like the dead.
Everytime I listen to this, I can't help but think about the universe, life...deep stuff like that. Its awsome, such a powerful song. Thanks a ton for this upload, the Dead RULE. :D
still MiSSiNg yoU JerryGarcia,,, Can you believe it was 18 years ago today we were all tragically separated,,, Thanks for all the goosebumps! I'll never be the same for the encounter...until then....
this is a very good version, thanks. Im still trying to find the version from the treble lp glastonbury fayre with the green cover, which I havent got now. if anyone has it would be grateful to youfor putting it on.
so i'll just say i love which i never said before, and let it go at that old friend the rest you may ignor. fare thee well jerry. your music and spirit will live on forever. i see 16 year old kids still jamming to the dead.
this version is on the so many roads box set,i believe the 2nd song on disc 2 or 3..ive listened to this clip about a hundred times and u can just tell it was dark star..on the box set they start the song around the 6:30 mark, finally get to here the whole song, yeah play it jerry....
I have a good friend who listens to alot of metal, and death metal and etc,, I've been trying forever to find the right song to get him to listen to, any you'd suggest?
grateful for all that you have given us dark star flashes in my mind sending me spiraling joyfully knowing you jerry are watching down jammin the heavens above one day we'll walk through the ramblin roses scarlet begonias china cats perched up on the mountains of the moon...
@WharfRat44 yo dark star is a song. this is a jam from it..usually every version of the dark star jam is different im pretty sure. and it is BEAUTIFUL :) later skater p.s way cool video dude, thanks for posting
@PetersJunta Same here. I've come to realize that most music is better when I'm not stoned. I haven't smoked pot in over 2 years and my life is much easier without it.
I am completely of like mindedness as DisForDave when they state that this song and its clip easily keeps one from going early to bed...I miss my GD friends of yesteryear. Yet, life is all about changes.
An absolutely remarkable and powerful version. Maybe the best. Only problem here is that at the 5:23 mark they edit out the band falling into a gorgeous version of "Wharf Rat". What you actually hear here is the band coming out of "Wharf Rat" and back into DARK STAR at about the 5:26 mark. Still cool but not as powerful as with "Wharf Rat", itself spectacular. Kudos to the animation here. Awesome.
"Daaahk Staaah!"

Forgot how amazing this particular version of Dark Star is... so amazing
imagine being dead without ever hearing this?
you missed out........BIG TIME!
The ancient Babylonians missed out on this entirely! Bummer!
***** Crap, the ancient Greeks missed it too. It's sort of unfathomable that they were able to somehow form the basis for Western Civilization without having heard this. I wonder how they did it?
dlyncherful I guess they somehow managed to build a great civilization without it, dlyncherful.
i cant imagine not being dead
Merkin Muffy or its that the civilization was never great from the start.....
Greatest songs from the dead!!! Wish I could have seen Jerry, but sadly I was not reborn until 7 years after his death :( Rock in Peace Legend!

i am with both of you. i am 13 and no one around me can understand this incredible stuff.
I attended with an older head/friend who, each time they played a new song (and they broke out 5!) , he got so irate, yelling out "Play the old shit!!!" Little did he know how important those new tunes would become to the next gen heads. Cheers!

Just fucking beautiful. Everyone is ON, and Phil is a monster.
I wish I was there, feeling like they did, together.
So organic..Like watching a butterfly move through the sky.
At 6:30, they go into a Minor 2/1 Progression that just appeared that night. That's what makes this jam so beautiful.
