Here's my theory: A lot of the scenes in the music videos are metaphorical. In side A, we see the girls talking to Heesoo and then we see her filming them dance. She's not dancing with them because she isn't actually their friend, and they aren't actually there at her school. Her filming them is a metaphor for her watching their videos as a fan and feeling close to them. In reality, she's all alone. Her cast is sort of a physical manifestation for how she's broken and hurting (she's wearing it since the start). The scene where she goes out into the rain and doesn't use her umbrella represents how she prefers facing the pain with her idols (she imagines them all playing in the rain) rather than taking care of herself and leaving them behind. In the next scene, she paints Minji's nail, and NewJeans signs her cast because they are the ones supporting her through her pain. At the end, we see that the cast is actually blank, and her own nail is painted. So she's been imagining this by herself because she doesn't have anyone there for her. As for the deer, it stares at her just like a "deer in the headlights", so it symbolizes her fear. We see the deer in the snowy scene. That's the only time we ever see snow, so this place is not actually real but instead represents her mind - cold and barren. At the end we see that everyone finds her kind of strange for being so isolated from the real world, but the boy keeps looking at her with actual care and concern. Now for side B: Here we see the clips of NewJeans having fun and dancing, but we don't see Heesoo filming them. Instead, we see her at one point pull out her camera to film the boy, showing that she's found a new obsession that's in the real world. The NewJeans clips indicate her merely thinking about them, as the clip of them signing her cast is shown just before she looks down at her blank cast. She is recognizing that her relationship with them isn't real, so her dropping the camera represents how she doesn't want to rely on them anymore. Then we see that she walks in the rain with her umbrella, finally taking care of herself and leaving her dependence on them behind. In the next scene, her phone rings, and if you read the caller name it says Minji. Heesoo however has her head in her arms and doesn't pick up. Then once again, there's the deer. Except this time, the deer is in the school. She's crying as she looks at it because her fear is in reality. She has to face her fear to interact with real people (namely the boy) and to reject the temptation to fall back into her old habits (Minji "calling" her back to them). Then she walks off with the boy and the deer goes away, indicating that she did it. In the ending flashforward scene, she watches the videos she used to watch when she was lonely, and she smiles because she's grateful for the comfort that NewJeans provided her before she found comfort in the real world.
I love this theory so much, and it makes absolute sense. However, knowing HYBE and how intricate and deep their storylines usually are, maybe there is some more to the music video interpretation, maybe there is a storyline kind of like they did with BTS in the most beautiful moment in life. Nevertheless, I do feel like your theory is the message they want to send us, how we, as fans, have to face our reality and leave our dependence on Idols behind.

The MV is very visual centered, but when you look at it from a deeper perspective, it's actually really meaningful and almost sad. The MV shows this 6th person following NewJeans and their activities, they watch them dance, watch them talk to other people, and overall be lively and a great friend, to most of us, our Idols are like imaginary friends we sometimes like to confide in when life gets tough, and the MV shows us that. To everyone else, they see nothing, pure blank, but to us, we see NewJeans, and we hear their songs, and we see their dances, and sometimes we apply these things to our daily life. The deer have a meaning too , no matter in what perspective you see it , the deer always will have a deep meaning , I think is the representation of the past , in this case the deer represent that music , when she see it she starts to get teared eyes , so maybe is like the lost feeling of the love she did have to the music , because the deer always appear at the end and going out of scene , maybe I'm right maybe not
NewJeans has said that "Ditto" is a song for their fans and continues the 90's nostalgia vibe. Here is my theory (similar to others as well). In the MV, "Heesoo" is a loner, kind of an outcast. Listening to Kpop, being a fan of NewJeans is her way of coping. She considers NewJeans as the friends she wanted to have. She imagines them as part of her reality. However, at some point, she moves from this stage in her life as she develops a relationship with the guy IRL. She then lets go of NewJeans and puts her memories of them away in a box. Years later, she opens the box and watches the video --- she remembers the time that she was a fan with fondness. The MV evokes a feeling of nostalgia -- how when we grow up, we look back at the group we liked and remember how they were a part of our life at one time.
you are right. heesoo’s full name is bahn heesoo which sounds same with bunnies (new jeans fanclub) in korean pronounce. so yes it is a story about idol and a fan.
I think a lot of people are reading into the MV too much. If you look at the lyrics its about a girl who likes a boy but due to her introverted nature she doesn't have the courage to do anything about it. The Newjeans members are like her imaginary friends who help her cope with life due to her shy and introverted nature. Until one day she starts to muster up the strength to break out of her shell and talk to the boy. With her new found courage she doesn't need her imaginary friends anymore, she's saying goodbye to the her imaginary friends. They just become a fond memory of her youth. It's nostalgic and sad at the same time.
That could be a theory too actually but what makes it weird is that there's a clip of her when she's older and she plays a VCR of the girls - which insinuates that they're real so I'm confused lol thanks for sharing your theory 😊

As it shows in the end she goes out with the boy and remember nj as a fond memory. But when she plays the vcr again, the girls come back. In a way nj will be there whenever you need them. It's beautiful, sad and again beautiful. I like how raw the mv is both aesthetic wise and message wise any fandom can relate to this.
this fits if you choose to ignore a lot of what they show in the two MV especially Side B. Like the Deer symbolism, her broken arm, her walking into the rain without the umbrella, her crying while “minji” is calling her phone. Things that aren’t related at all to the boy or about being introverted and shy.

I cried!!!!! Side A is the a story about a girl who cope up with her loneliness and problems with imagining NewJeans (her idol) as her bestfriends. At those moments, her crush is a constant reminder of how she cant escape reality forever. In side B, she 'drops' her 'friendship' with NewJeans and live in reality. Until one day when she's older, she opens the memory box and reminiscing her happy memories with NewJeans. She let them inside her life again with more grace and maturity, and New Jeans are more than happy to take it. :))
honestly, i really like the “accident” theory from a storytelling perspective for this MV. I think a lot of the visuals of the MV fit into that theory or can be representations of dealing with grief and learning to move on. I also think the whole “learning to move on” concept can be tied to the actual concept of the MV being the parasocial relationship between newjeans and fans.
Hee-soo means Bunnies, the fandom of New Jeans, and most fans can only get in touch with the singer through media (ex. the camcorder that Hee-soo keeps carrying in the music video), as shown in the video. Fans and singers are always difficult to be together in reality, but singers are always there, and sometimes people look at the fans who follow the singers in a strange way. I think it's like that. Haha Fans and singers who have always been together like that, as time goes by, the fans start to focus on other things in reality, and the distance in their hearts (I think this is expressed as a deer in the middle) is bound to get farther away, and later on, the fans This situation of leaving will come eventually, but looking back over time, it seems to mean that the idols we always were with were our favorite idols back then, and those idols were always in our memory. - I copied from other comment and I think it’s the most accurate interpretation
I saw another theory that I thought was really good and that is that Heesoo is "every Kpop fan"....New Jeans represents the artist she stans that take over her life (her imaginary friends) and the boy is the reality that is waiting for her. Once she destroys the camera, it represents Heesoo moving away from her obsessions' and the scene of Heesoo walking with the young man, is Heessoo (the fan) paying attention to the life around her as opposed to the life of her favorite group she was once obsessed with. The scene with a grown up Heesoo watching the VHS is simply her revisiting her youth and memory of the music and the people who made it. The deer represents the innocence's that Heesoo is moving away from; towards the prospect of young love and maturing.
In a literal perception (if taken to story telling) it might be about a girl who is suffering from survival's guilt when her friends died and she's the only one survived. Thus seeing a deer that symbolizes how one is stuck in the middle (not accepting past or future). Just a famous fan theory on twt of course and I like how you had this as your first theory tho not pretty sure abt the guy being a suspect unless he was never caught

I think it could also be explained without NewJeans dying in an accident, but as NewJeans moving on and becoming idols, where Heesoo decides to focus on her own life rather than documenting theirs. Here’s my understanding: The 6 person (Hidden face girl/Heesoo) consider to be stuck in her pasted still since the mv is showing her memories with the 5 people (NewJeans) that’s why she holding the camera at the same spot and playing the film tape as replaying those memories , just for her to remember but she wants to forget them as “B Side” MV where she drop the camera to remove those memories. And NewJeans are the ones who passed away since the deer means “the deceased loved one had special appreciation of a certain animal…(loved ones who pass away)”. Mainly she wants to remove those memories of NewJeans and not let them keep replaying just to remember her pasted everytime. That’s my theory and sorry for my grammar errors! 💗

A. The girl is into an idol called New Jeans. Carrying a camcorder and taking pictures of New Jeans. But in the middle, the existence of a male student starts to come into the eyes. Still, I have New Jeans. I'm happy when I'm taking pictures of dazzling girls. If I'm with them... I'm sure they'll need at least a friend like me who shoots for them... I am left alone and the cast is clean. Traces of memories remain in the little finger I shoot a camcorder, but there is no New Jeans. My friends look at me strangely like this. (I am addicted to idols) I have an umbrella, but I will get in the rain with them. We will overcome the ordeal together until the end. Minji erased the girl's legs. (The girl doesn't go anywhere) B. I shoot them again today, but as expected, my friends look at me strangely. I share my sadness on the bench with New Jeans (I guess the male student caught my eye) When the male student looks at him, he spurns the spot and leaves. New Jeans looks at male students I take a picture of a male student with a camcorder. New Jeans seem to get along just fine without me or without me Maybe I'm not needed by them... The 5 girls of NewJeans represents the idol and the 6th girl represent the fans. There are 2 Side. Side A is a perspective of a fan to his idol. Side B tells the perspective of an idol to his fan. Just my opinion.
New jeans are imaginary friends. If we connect it with the lyrics it starts making sense as well 'I imagined you' (proves they are imaginary - but once again what's real? Are we real or its all a simulation xD) / words such as 'maze' & 'riddle' confirms the idea that this song is about something unreal, otherworldly by adding the Deer - the poetic connotation of Innocence - childhood/teenage and then the Deer leaving which means growing up leaving the imaginary friends. In part b I believe it was it showed a scene where one of the new jeans member is painting the girls nail and then it show a scene later that her nail was painted but what if she painted it by herself but something similar happened with one of a members painting her nail and if an accident did happen with the nj members and the girl that’s why her arm now broken
She is probably reliving moments from the past and filming is her way of coping from the loss and I don’t really believe the guy might be a crush it could be that the guy is the one who caused the accident that happened with the nj members and the girl wants him to feel guilty for taking her friends away which is why when the girl saw the guy on the balcony she got up and left
Another theory could be that the nj members are old friends of the girl and they all passed and the girl cannot accept the fact that her friends are no longer with her so she sort of is imagining them but the moments were real once but since they aren’t there anymore she appears crazy to others but in her mind it’s like the old times at first she wasn’t crazy but then she actually started to believe that her friends were there with her

There's a couple ways you can watch and enjoy the videos. You can dig into the central story and ask what its about, or your can review it on the musical basis. I'll keep it to the music. This group came out of nowhere and are producing some pretty amazing music,, the thing that strikes me is that all 5 of these girls have insanely beautiful voices! The musical trajectory has been pretty special. Obviously there is a talented team behind them, and it takes a team these days, but whatever they're doing they've been nailing it. It won't be long before they're in demand everywhere. Honestly, this feels a lot like when the Beatles came out, again, from nowhere.
I have another theory which is what ditto means is the same thing again and an example of it is if one folds his arm so does the other so what I think the video is saying is that since the girl was relieving moments once again before throwing the camera. As well as the nj members the moments shown in both a and b they turn into a memory so then the girl follows the meaning of ditto so the memories that the nj girls left must become a memory as well as the camera with the video’s.

Okay I’m just putting this out there before I hear Rosan’s theory: So this girl (Heesoo) has experienced trauma which is somehow linked to the cat, the deer, the boy and her injured arm. She imagines a group of friends (NewJeans), perfect girls who love her and make memories with her, but she always somehow feels like an outsider looking in, since they aren’t actually real. I think the camera and videotapes represent memories, but memories that aren’t actually real but ones that Heesoo fabricated to help herself get through a hard time. They also might represent how fans only perceive NewJeans online, virtually, so our memories with them aren’t entirely real. I think Heesoo represents NewJeans fans (Tokkis), who use NewJeans as a source of comfort when they are struggling, but it also teaches fans that they eventually need to create their own, real memories, because NewJeans can only help us online. I know it’s a really dark theory lol but that’s what I got…

My theory is that all six girls were friends and there was an accident where they all died except the camera girl who survived but with a broken arm. She is imagining them still there with her to cope with her loss, and slowly she starts to come to terms with reality that they are not coming back and she has to move on with real people. The boy helps her move on and becomes her friend after she loss the five other girls in the accident. The deer represents gentleness, awareness of surroundings, unconditional love, and mindfulness. So the deer presented itself to her because she has been hurt and her heart needs tending to and signifies that it’s ok to move on in life despite her loss. At the end she is an adult and looks back on her cherished memories.

Here's my theory: Heesoo join them since previous years Summer/Autumn period when they are still working on their choreography, and she offer to help recording their choreography. Then something happen during the Winter/Spring break, Heesoo return to school with her casted arm, but the rest of the girl were gone. All she left is their deja vu in the camrecorder, so in refusal to accept their departure, she begin to visualise thing in front of classroom or rooftop that worried her classmate especially that boy. So that boy help her to move on, and she drop her camrecorder from the rooftop after finally determined to move on to acceptance phase after griefing on their departure until many years later she is finally grew up she finally replay her recording and they return from memories for her once more times.

6th girl's name is Heesoo Ban, and we put the last name in front so we call her "Ban Heesoo" and it is the metaphor for New Jeans fan club "Barneys". So this is the story btw New Jeans ans their fans. They once love the artist, but they leave them for some reasons, and they sometimes come back and share their memories.
My Theory is that the girl with the camera got into a car accident & they other girls passed. Hit a deer maybe why a deer was in it. Also you can see she was hurt cus of the cast on her arm. They guy kept looking at her maybe because he felt bad. Also it's weird the camera girl is the main character from the show "All of us are dead" on Netflix. A show which they are school students which most of her friends died in the show.
It's more likely that the new jeans is her imaginary friends which she is stuck in the imaginary world but the boy help her to comeback to reality as he was walking her in the last scene.

One thing that's obvious, the new jeans' uniforms are different from the camera girl's uniform and the boy she had a crush on. So I guess it's metaphorically speaking as if she's their friend when she's actually not friends with them in real life because she's alone from the beginning to the time she's grown up and lived in an apartment by herself. While everyone is stuck with hanni and heesoo. Idk why it feels like Danielle is strongly related to the song. Maybe because of the lyrics "Don't wanna stay in the middle..." Because Danielle is always the one in the middle. My interpretation (a mix of all other comments) is that the girl heesoo is only imagining the members as she is suffering. She thinks that they are her friends but she feels like an outcast. They have great memories together but at last when she lets the camera fall down and break maybe it shows that she is letting go of her imaginary friends.

It feels like the videos leave more questions than provided answers. I’ve seen New Jeans perform live at award shows (On TV). These are the first New Jeans videos I have seen as well, so I don’t know anything about them to even try and come up with a scenario of what is happening, but I am going to try. 😅 Ditto starts off with camera girl (Hesso) grown and watching the video’s she took. It goes through several scenes of her filming the 5 girls at various locations. Then, at the end it shows her again filming in those same scenes but the 5 girls aren’t there. It is just her as if she is imaging the girls and filming them. On the B side it starts off with her filming the 5 girls, but then it is if she realizes they aren’t real and the drawings on her cast disappear and she walks away from them alone in the rain with the umbrella. Throughout both sides, there is a boy she seems interested in and he seems interested in her. In B side after she walks away in the rain from the 5 girls she is seen walking with the boy. At the very end it shows the camera girl grown again watching the video and then the 5 girls (who haven’t aged perhaps) come back in saying it has been such a long time. So my (crazy) theory is the camera girl lost her 5 friends, but she had a difficult time accepting it. It was if she still saw them and filmed them, but they weren’t there. Perhaps she survived an accident (the cast) that they didn’t but I am unclear. But since she walked away with the boy, she had to accept her friends were gone to move on with life and pursue a relationship with him. The deer was shown in both A & B sides. In Korean culture deer have often been associated with heaven and gods. They connect the god in heaven and shamans on earth. In other cultures deer represent awareness of surroundings, unconditional love and mindfulness. In side A it might have something to do with the loss of the girls and in side B the loss of the boy (man), which resulted in the 5 girls “coming” back into her life to help her through her loss. That may be way out there. LOL. My other theory was the 5 girls never existed and she had mental health issues due to traumatic things that happened to her (the cast) that led her to create the 5 girls in her mind to escape from reality. But then she is interested in the boy and realizes she has to live in reality to have a relationship with him and leaves the 5 imaginary friends behind. (There is the word imaginary in the song). I just wanna share my theory, my theory is that new jeans do exist but they were distant friends and after having a fight they weren't friends with heeseo anymore so heeseo was still on her denial stage and kept on longing for her friends. My second theory is that new jeans are imaginary friends that cheers her up, and the guy was confused on why shes filming nothing. And after waking up she realized all of it.
to put it simple, the mv basically just shows us that the we fans, the ones who have some type of relationship or bond with the kpop idols to the point where its their only will to live, source of happiness or a big obsession, is unhealthy. face the facts, face reality. Kpop is just a distraction, with idols or not, our problems are still there.
I replied this to someone else’s theory but I’m gonna make my own comment so it’s seen: in addition to the whole “imaginary friends” theory, I actual think they are digital. It goes deeper than just her watching their videos too.. for example the phone ringing makes me think of the digital aspects of their concept in the first EP and especially their “phoning” app. They’re the only Hybe group that’s not on weverse but instead created their OWN app which has them texting/calling you, has a photo album, etc. as if you’re their friend. Like I think that’s going to be a big part of their concept, this idea of them being imaginary/digital “friends.” This makes me think Heesoo maybe represents us in a way? And then depending on how deep we want to go with the “digital” theory, what if she actually was seeing them through her camera but not irl? That might be a stretch but it’s something I thought of. But regardless the fact that we never see her with them irl, either she’s watching them from the distance (imagining them) and getting the courage to walk away a and face real life on her own, or they’re seen only through the lens of her camera. This really makes me think they were never real and only existed either digitally or in her imagination as opposed to the accident theory

I actually cried when I saw the end of the second video because it reminded me of the ferry accident 300 died mostly teens and maybe she survived could be about the lady's age now ..she was wearing black (mourning), her arm was hurt ,the boyfriend look at her alone from far keeping his distance but she runs away ,the school mates don't know what to do when she's taking a video again alone reliving those precious moments, but she realized and breaks the camera and the bf consoles her, theres was a sad music video about the ferry accident by "the ark" called "the light" They were so talented but I guess people didn't support it because of the theme
okay here's a random and possibly not true theory. what if they are real and they were friends but she always felt like she's an outcast in the group cause maybe all of them had this connection through dance and music and all but she's only behind the scene. so she felt like an outsider in the group. and then all of them fought because of it and their friendship broke. so all these scenes of her alone were just her being so angry that she ended up remembering her past as her being alone all the time (but she wasn't). and then in the future, as an adult, she looked back at the clips and smiled remembering those memories( it's real). and she misses them and regrets breaking their friendship. so i looked up what it means when a deer stares at you and it meant "an invitation to let go of the worries and anxieties of daily life and embrace the joys of being in the present moment.". so maybe she was anxious and worried that they didn't view her as a friend(even though they did). there's also the filter of the scenes like when she's alone, it's blue but when she's with them, it was warm. when it's blue she's lonely but when it's warm she's all happy with them. but idk how this connects with everything. the boy though. idk how to incorporate him in this theory. maybe he was her support when they stopped being friends but that doesn't make sense cause they were comforting her and stuff. this is probably not true but it was fun hehe

The deer can represent two things a non-confrontational personality (side A) that happens to be her looking at herself in the white scenario or could be an observational, empathetic, and sympathetic side of someone who could represent the guy (Side B) that's why it appeared in the school where he is always watching her with concern.

i read a theory that its actully the oppsite.. that the 5 girls d wworded in a car accident or somthing like that and she alusion them as she cant accept what happend to them.. she is feeling survviver guilts as she was in the car with them when the accident happend (which is why she have the cast in her hand) and thats why she cant move from the past and lives through the videos of them that she suppusdly took.. that explains why at the end of the music video we see those same secenes that we saw through out the music but this time the girls are not in the films.. which show that she aliusnet them all this time and that she starting to finally move on from the past pain and from blaming her self for what happend..
ditto 뮤직비디오를 처음 보자마자 섬뜩한 기분이 들었는데, 카메라든 여자는 죽은것 같습니다. 학교복도 장면에서 소녀들이 뛰어다니다 없어졌다 하는 장면이 나오는데, 제 생각으론 이태원 골목길에서 벌어졌던 일을 담은 장면 같습니다. 그리고 이태원에서 돌아가신분들을 추모하기 위해서 분양소를 마련했는데 그 당시 분양소에 사진과 이름없이 국화꽃에만 추모를 했습니다. 이 ditto뮤직비디오에서 다른사람의 얼굴과 이름표는 나오는데 카메라든 여자의 얼굴과 이름표가 안나오는건 분양소의 상황을 의미한것 같습니다. 그리고 카메라든 여자의 왼쪽팔 기브스에 소녀들이 '죽지마(don't die) ㅠㅠ'라고 살짝 글쓴게 보입니다. 이태원 골목에서 죽었거나, 위중하던가, 트라우마를 격은 사람에게 보내는 메세지인것 같습니다. side b 마지막 부분에 카메라든 여자의 엄마로 보이는 여자가 나오는데 죽었던 딸이 언제든지 방문을 열고 들어와서 "엄마나 배고파 먹을것좀 줘"라고 말할것만 같고 그랬으면 하는 마음을 담은 장면 인것 같습니다. 고양이와 사슴, 물마시던 남자의 의미는 잘모르겠습니다. 그리고 올해 이태원에서 10월 29일에 일어난 일인데 이 뮤직비디오의 장면은 계절상 여름이나 가을입니다. 시간상 맞지 않아서 제 생각이 아닐수도 있습니다. ditto 뮤직비디오는 슬프기도 하고 무섭기도 해서 보기 힘듭니다.
Dropping the camcoder scene was really painful to me. It's almost like a suicide, flash back all the moments at once and break... Anything else is ok but that particular scene seems a bit dangerous.
This is my perspective. I think the correct order is watch side-B to side-A. There are spoilers in side-B because everything is a mystery. It’s just the girl filming NJ following them and videoing the guy, then dropping the cam recorder. I have 2 theories. First, maybe the girl(park jihu) is experiencing depression due to an accident because her arm has been cast, resulting in a schizophrenic state. Imagining that her friends are still alive in some moments. Second, either her friends died or it’s her that died but her soul is still stuck watching her friends. Maybe by dropping the cam recorder the girl is close to realizing that NJ is non-existing or she is dead and the deer represents the girl not in the world already. If you watch B first the ending is a girl watching the VHS and reminiscing new jeans memories then credits appear while vhs is still playing and you can hear the girls talking. More like the ending of side-B is the beginning of side A. Also,if you listen to the melody in side-B ending, it is the same as the melody in side-A beginning. Then continuing to side A, which the girl is still watching vhs of nj girls, is like a continuation of what she is watching in side-B ending but more detailed. The ending of side-A is you don’t know if new jeans are imaginary or the girl is imagining them because she put the nail polish in minji’s pinky but when she woke up it’s pinky that has nail polish. Also, she’s filming no one. OR the girl is dead, because during the drinking fountain scene, in the viewpoint of the guy no one is drinking at the drinking fountain aside from him. Also, Minji drew her but then erased half of the drawing. Then the video ended and credits appeared. Side-A they showed that the girl is not filming anyone. In the fountain scene, when the guy is drinking the girl is not there he is not seeing the girl and Minji drew the girl then erased half of her. Which would make you realize one of them is imagining the other. Either NJ is imaginary/dead OR the girl has schizophrenia or the girl is dead. So if you watch it from side A to B you will still feel mv is not yet done because NJ girls are still talking. And MV will confuse you because of the emotion, the feeling it is not yet finished.
Instead of focusing on the video itself, it should be interpreted from a more aesthetic point of view and mise-en-scene. They are not just friends or idol stars that girl who taking camera, as previous interpretations suggest, but nostalgic itself in the past. A nostalgic moment of the past that certainly existed for myself, although others don't know. The singers, actors, and friends we loved at that time, the beautiful moments and things that loved that we can never go back now, but suddenly arouse bitter sweet memories...
people have various theories, mostly about some accident or mvs being a metaphor for a parasocial relationship but for me its mostly a story about being lonely and moving on. the camera girl used to be friends with the other five during childhood, but life happened, maybe she moved, and now, when she's a teenager she's lonely and she still sees them sometimes. maybe thats why Minjis calling her, maybe they can only talk on the phone sometimes. its very simple theory, and problably its not what was intened but id like to believe that she found a new friend (the boy) and moved on, matured.
Here's what I think- New Jeans concept is about Nostalgia and reinvention. So maybe Heeseo is reliving her school days as an adult. The 6 were friends during school but something happened and they got separated. Heeseo couldn't recover from the separation and started to hallucinate things
My theory- the sixth girl(heesoo) is the camera girl of newjeans and they're all friends. But she's very introverted and shy. The girls are always together, they dance they practice but heesoo feels alone with them coz she doesn't feel like part of the group. She likes the guy but too afraid to face him. She then breaks the camera and leaves everything behind. Years later she's reminiscing the memories with the girls and smiles. This is a very straightforward way of putting it but this is what I feel about the mv. Being a part of a big friend group during my high-school years there were a lot of times I felt I didn't belong but of course I loved my friends.
In the movie Ghost, Sam says I love you, Molly, and her answer is "Ditto." I don't know if it's related but is about ghosts. Mabe, the friends are dead, and she its the only survivor.
Heres my theory that there was a huge accident the tragic deaths (mostly young) of 156 people caught in an Itaewon crowd which happened on Halloween day. A girl holding a camera would be an only survivor from that accident lost all of her besties and she cannot get out of the shock so strongly hold a delusion making up her friends still alive which is not true fact. Remembering those days warm gatherings with friends and cannot believe in a fact that they are all gone. at the very last scene, seems the camera girl gets little older turns on the VHS again, shows that NewJeans members are not illusion. And seems the camera girl overcome the accidental memory but her friends still remains as a warm and bright memory.
Here's my theory:
A lot of the scenes in the music videos are metaphorical. In side A, we see the girls talking to Heesoo and then we see her filming them dance. She's not dancing with them because she isn't actually their friend, and they aren't actually there at her school. Her filming them is a metaphor for her watching their videos as a fan and feeling close to them. In reality, she's all alone. Her cast is sort of a physical manifestation for how she's broken and hurting (she's wearing it since the start). The scene where she goes out into the rain and doesn't use her umbrella represents how she prefers facing the pain with her idols (she imagines them all playing in the rain) rather than taking care of herself and leaving them behind. In the next scene, she paints Minji's nail, and NewJeans signs her cast because they are the ones supporting her through her pain. At the end, we see that the cast is actually blank, and her own nail is painted. So she's been imagining this by herself because she doesn't have anyone there for her. As for the deer, it stares at her just like a "deer in the headlights", so it symbolizes her fear. We see the deer in the snowy scene. That's the only time we ever see snow, so this place is not actually real but instead represents her mind - cold and barren. At the end we see that everyone finds her kind of strange for being so isolated from the real world, but the boy keeps looking at her with actual care and concern.
Now for side B: Here we see the clips of NewJeans having fun and dancing, but we don't see Heesoo filming them. Instead, we see her at one point pull out her camera to film the boy, showing that she's found a new obsession that's in the real world. The NewJeans clips indicate her merely thinking about them, as the clip of them signing her cast is shown just before she looks down at her blank cast. She is recognizing that her relationship with them isn't real, so her dropping the camera represents how she doesn't want to rely on them anymore. Then we see that she walks in the rain with her umbrella, finally taking care of herself and leaving her dependence on them behind. In the next scene, her phone rings, and if you read the caller name it says Minji. Heesoo however has her head in her arms and doesn't pick up. Then once again, there's the deer. Except this time, the deer is in the school. She's crying as she looks at it because her fear is in reality. She has to face her fear to interact with real people (namely the boy) and to reject the temptation to fall back into her old habits (Minji "calling" her back to them). Then she walks off with the boy and the deer goes away, indicating that she did it. In the ending flashforward scene, she watches the videos she used to watch when she was lonely, and she smiles because she's grateful for the comfort that NewJeans provided her before she found comfort in the real world.

I love this theory so much, and it makes absolute sense. However, knowing HYBE and how intricate and deep their storylines usually are, maybe there is some more to the music video interpretation, maybe there is a storyline kind of like they did with BTS in the most beautiful moment in life. Nevertheless, I do feel like your theory is the message they want to send us, how we, as fans, have to face our reality and leave our dependence on Idols behind.

The MV is very visual centered, but when you look at it from a deeper perspective, it's actually really meaningful and almost sad. The MV shows this 6th person following NewJeans and their activities, they watch them dance, watch them talk to other people, and overall be lively and a great friend, to most of us, our Idols are like imaginary friends we sometimes like to confide in when life gets tough, and the MV shows us that. To everyone else, they see nothing, pure blank, but to us, we see NewJeans, and we hear their songs, and we see their dances, and sometimes we apply these things to our daily life. K-Pop is not just Music, it's a way to connect people, and this is why NewJeans will always be my favorite group, because they understand this.

NewJeans has said that "Ditto" is a song for their fans and continues the 90's nostalgia vibe. Here is my theory (similar to others as well).
In the MV, "Heesoo" is a loner, kind of an outcast. Listening to Kpop, being a fan of NewJeans is her way of coping. She considers NewJeans as the friends she wanted to have. She imagines them as part of her reality. However, at some point, she moves from this stage in her life as she develops a relationship with the guy IRL. She then lets go of NewJeans and puts her memories of them away in a box. Years later, she opens the box and watches the video --- she remembers the time that she was a fan with fondness. The MV evokes a feeling of nostalgia -- how when we grow up, we look back at the group we liked and remember how they were a part of our life at one time.
This is my favorite one so far. Apart from my own theory.

I think a lot of people are reading into the MV too much. If you look at the lyrics its about a girl who likes a boy but due to her introverted nature she doesn't have the courage to do anything about it. The Newjeans members are like her imaginary friends who help her cope with life due to her shy and introverted nature. Until one day she starts to muster up the strength to break out of her shell and talk to the boy. With her new found courage she doesn't need her imaginary friends anymore, she's saying goodbye to the her imaginary friends. They just become a fond memory of her youth. It's nostalgic and sad at the same time.

I cried!!!!! Side A is the a story about a girl who cope up with her loneliness and problems with imagining NewJeans (her idol) as her bestfriends. At those moments, her crush is a constant reminder of how she cant escape reality forever. In side B, she 'drops' her 'friendship' with NewJeans and live in reality. Until one day when she's older, she opens the memory box and reminiscing her happy memories with NewJeans. She let them inside her life again with more grace and maturity, and New Jeans are more than happy to take it. :))
honestly, i really like the “accident” theory from a storytelling perspective for this MV. I think a lot of the visuals of the MV fit into that theory or can be representations of dealing with grief and learning to move on. I also think the whole “learning to move on” concept can be tied to the actual concept of the MV being the parasocial relationship between newjeans and fans.
Hee-soo means Bunnies, the fandom of New Jeans, and most fans can only get in touch with the singer through media (ex. the camcorder that Hee-soo keeps carrying in the music video), as shown in the video. Fans and singers are always difficult to be together in reality, but singers are always there, and sometimes people look at the fans who follow the singers in a strange way. I think it's like that. Haha Fans and singers who have always been together like that, as time goes by, the fans start to focus on other things in reality, and the distance in their hearts (I think this is expressed as a deer in the middle) is bound to get farther away, and later on, the fans This situation of leaving will come eventually, but looking back over time, it seems to mean that the idols we always were with were our favorite idols back then, and those idols were always in our memory.

I saw another theory that I thought was really good and that is that Heesoo is "every Kpop fan"....New Jeans represents the artist she stans that take over her life (her imaginary friends) and the boy is the reality that is waiting for her. Once she destroys the camera, it represents Heesoo moving away from her obsessions' and the scene of Heesoo walking with the young man, is Heessoo (the fan) paying attention to the life around her as opposed to the life of her favorite group she was once obsessed with. The scene with a grown up Heesoo watching the VHS is simply her revisiting her youth and memory of the music and the people who made it. The deer represents the innocence's that Heesoo is moving away from; towards the prospect of young love and maturing.

Here’s my understanding: The 6 person (Hidden face girl/Heesoo) consider to be stuck in her pasted still since the mv is showing her memories with the 5 people (NewJeans) that’s why she holding the camera at the same spot and playing the film tape as replaying those memories , just for her to remember but she wants to forget them as “B Side” MV where she drop the camera to remove those memories. And NewJeans are the ones who passed away since the deer means “the deceased loved one had special appreciation of a certain animal…(loved ones who pass away)”.
Mainly she wants to remove those memories of NewJeans and not let them keep replaying just to remember her pasted everytime. That’s my theory and sorry for my grammar errors! 💗

Are we real or its all a simulation xD) / words such as 'maze' & 'riddle' confirms the idea that this song is about something unreal, otherworldly by adding the Deer - the poetic connotation of Innocence - childhood/teenage and then the Deer leaving which means growing up leaving the imaginary friends. She is probably reliving moments from the past and filming is her way of coping from the loss and I don’t really believe the guy might be a crush it could be that the guy is the one who caused the accident that happened with the nj members and the girl wants him to feel guilty for taking her friends away which is why when the girl saw the guy on the balcony she got up and left

This group came out of nowhere and are producing some pretty amazing music,, the thing that strikes me is that all 5 of these girls have insanely beautiful voices! The musical trajectory has been pretty special. Obviously there is a talented team behind them, and it takes a team these days, but whatever they're doing they've been nailing it. So this girl (Heesoo) has experienced trauma which is somehow linked to the cat, the deer, the boy and her injured arm. She imagines a group of friends (NewJeans), perfect girls who love her and make memories with her, but she always somehow feels like an outsider looking in, since they aren’t actually real. I think the camera and videotapes represent memories, but memories that aren’t actually real but ones that Heesoo fabricated to help herself get through a hard time. They also might represent how fans only perceive NewJeans online, virtually, so our memories with them aren’t entirely real.
I think Heesoo represents NewJeans fans (Tokkis), who use NewJeans as a source of comfort when they are struggling, but it also teaches fans that they eventually need to create their own, real memories, because NewJeans can only help us online.

My theory is that all six girls were friends and there was an accident where they all died except the camera girl who survived but with a broken arm. She is imagining them still there with her to cope with her loss, and slowly she starts to come to terms with reality that they are not coming back and she has to move on with real people. The boy helps her move on and becomes her friend after she loss the five other girls in the accident. The deer represents gentleness, awareness of surroundings, unconditional love, and mindfulness. So the deer presented itself to her because she has been hurt and her heart needs tending to and signifies that it’s ok to move on in life despite her loss. At the end she is an adult and looks back on her cherished memories.

Here's my theory:
Heesoo join them since previous years Summer/Autumn period when they are still working on their choreography, and she offer to help recording their choreography. Then something happen during the Winter/Spring break, Heesoo return to school with her casted arm, but the rest of the girl were gone. All she left is their deja vu in the camrecorder, so in refusal to accept their departure, she begin to visualise thing in front of classroom or rooftop that worried her classmate especially that boy. So that boy help her to move on, and she drop her camrecorder from the rooftop after finally determined to move on to acceptance phase after griefing on their departure until many years later she is finally grew up she finally replay her recording and they return from memories for her once more times.

My interpretation (a mix of all other comments) is that the girl heesoo is only imagining the members as she is suffering. She thinks that they are her friends but she feels like an outcast. It feels like the videos leave more questions than provided answers. I’ve seen New Jeans perform live at award shows (On TV). These are the first New Jeans videos I have seen as well, so I don’t know anything about them to even try and come up with a scenario of what is happening, but I am going to try. 😅
Ditto starts off with camera girl (Hesso) grown and watching the video’s she took. It goes through several scenes of her filming the 5 girls at various locations. Then, at the end it shows her again filming in those same scenes but the 5 girls aren’t there. It is just her as if she is imaging the girls and filming them. On the B side it starts off with her filming the 5 girls, but then it is if she realizes they aren’t real and the drawings on her cast disappear and she walks away from them alone in the rain with the umbrella. Throughout both sides, there is a boy she seems interested in and he seems interested in her. In B side after she walks away in the rain from the 5 girls she is seen walking with the boy. At the very end it shows the camera girl grown again watching the video and then the 5 girls (who haven’t aged perhaps) come back in saying it has been such a long time.
So my (crazy) theory is the camera girl lost her 5 friends, but she had a difficult time accepting it. It was if she still saw them and filmed them, but they weren’t there. Perhaps she survived an accident (the cast) that they didn’t but I am unclear. But since she walked away with the boy, she had to accept her friends were gone to move on with life and pursue a relationship with him. The deer was shown in both A & B sides. In Korean culture deer have often been associated with heaven and gods. They connect the god in heaven and shamans on earth. In other cultures deer represent awareness of surroundings, unconditional love and mindfulness. In side A it might have something to do with the loss of the girls and in side B the loss of the boy (man), which resulted in the 5 girls “coming” back into her life to help her through her loss. That may be way out there. LOL.
My other theory was the 5 girls never existed and she had mental health issues due to traumatic things that happened to her (the cast) that led her to create the 5 girls in her mind to escape from reality. But then she is interested in the boy and realizes she has to live in reality to have a relationship with him and leaves the 5 imaginary friends behind. (There is the word imaginary in the song). But later in life after she is grown she loses the boy and she retreats into her mind and her 5 imaginary friends come back to help her as a protection because real life is too difficult.
I hope the meaning comes out so I know the real meaning. But, it was fun imagining. 😅

My second theory is that new jeans are imaginary friends that cheers her up, and the guy was confused on why shes filming nothing. And after waking up she realized all of it.

to put it simple, the mv basically just shows us that the we fans, the ones who have some type of relationship or bond with the kpop idols to the point where its their only will to live, source of happiness or a big obsession, is unhealthy. face the facts, face reality. I replied this to someone else’s theory but I’m gonna make my own comment so it’s seen: in addition to the whole “imaginary friends” theory, I actual think they are digital. It goes deeper than just her watching their videos too.. for example the phone ringing makes me think of the digital aspects of their concept in the first EP and especially their “phoning” app. They’re the only Hybe group that’s not on weverse but instead created their OWN app which has them texting/calling you, has a photo album, etc. as if you’re their friend. Like I think that’s going to be a big part of their concept, this idea of them being imaginary/digital “friends.” This makes me think Heesoo maybe represents us in a way?
And then depending on how deep we want to go with the “digital” theory, what if she actually was seeing them through her camera but not irl? That might be a stretch but it’s something I thought of. But regardless the fact that we never see her with them irl, either she’s watching them from the distance (imagining them) and getting the courage to walk away a and face real life on her own, or they’re seen only through the lens of her camera. This really makes me think they were never real and only existed either digitally or in her imagination as opposed to the accident theory

I actually cried when I saw the end of the second video because it reminded me of the ferry accident 300 died mostly teens and maybe she survived could be about the lady's age now ..she was wearing black (mourning), her arm was hurt ,the boyfriend look at her alone from far keeping his distance but she runs away ,the school mates don't know what to do when she's taking a video again alone reliving those precious moments, but she realized and breaks the camera and the bf consoles her, theres was a sad music video about the ferry accident by "the ark" called "the light" They were so talented but I guess people didn't support it because of the theme

okay here's a random and possibly not true theory. what if they are real and they were friends but she always felt like she's an outcast in the group cause maybe all of them had this connection through dance and music and all but she's only behind the scene. so she felt like an outsider in the group. and then all of them fought because of it and their friendship broke. so all these scenes of her alone were just her being so angry that she ended up remembering her past as her being alone all the time (but she wasn't). and then in the future, as an adult, she looked back at the clips and smiled remembering those memories( it's real). and she misses them and regrets breaking their friendship. so i looked up what it means when a deer stares at you and it meant "an invitation to let go of the worries and anxieties of daily life and embrace the joys of being in the present moment.". so maybe she was anxious and worried that they didn't view her as a friend(even though they did).
there's also the filter of the scenes like when she's alone, it's blue but when she's with them, it was warm. when it's blue she's lonely but when it's warm she's all happy with them. but idk how this connects with everything.
the boy though. idk how to incorporate him in this theory. maybe he was her support when they stopped being friends but that doesn't make sense cause they were comforting her and stuff.

ditto 뮤직비디오를 처음 보자마자 섬뜩한 기분이 들었는데, 카메라든 여자는 죽은것 같습니다. 학교복도 장면에서 소녀들이 뛰어다니다 없어졌다 하는 장면이 나오는데, 제 생각으론 이태원 골목길에서 벌어졌던 일을 담은 장면 같습니다. 그리고 이태원에서 돌아가신분들을 추모하기 위해서 분양소를 마련했는데 그 당시 분양소에 사진과 이름없이 국화꽃에만 추모를 했습니다. 이 ditto뮤직비디오에서 다른사람의 얼굴과 이름표는 나오는데 카메라든 여자의 얼굴과 이름표가 안나오는건 분양소의 상황을 의미한것 같습니다. 그리고 카메라든 여자의 왼쪽팔 기브스에 소녀들이 '죽지마(don't die) ㅠㅠ'라고 살짝 글쓴게 보입니다. 이태원 골목에서 죽었거나, 위중하던가, 트라우마를 격은 사람에게 보내는 메세지인것 같습니다. side b 마지막 부분에 카메라든 여자의 엄마로 보이는 여자가 나오는데 죽었던 딸이 언제든지 방문을 열고 들어와서 "엄마나 배고파 먹을것좀 줘"라고 말할것만 같고 그랬으면 하는 마음을 담은 장면 인것 같습니다. 고양이와 사슴, 물마시던 남자의 의미는 잘모르겠습니다. 그리고 올해 이태원에서 10월 29일에 일어난 일인데 이 뮤직비디오의 장면은 계절상 여름이나 가을입니다. 시간상 맞지 않아서 제 생각이 아닐수도 있습니다.

Dropping the camcoder scene was really painful to me. It's almost like a suicide, flash back all the moments at once and break... Anything else is ok but that particular scene seems a bit dangerous.

This is my perspective. I think the correct order is watch side-B to side-A.
There are spoilers in side-B because everything is a mystery. It’s just the girl filming NJ following them and videoing the guy, then dropping the cam recorder. I have 2 theories. First, maybe the girl(park jihu) is experiencing depression due to an accident because her arm has been cast, resulting in a schizophrenic state. Imagining that her friends are still alive in some moments. Second, either her friends died or it’s her that died but her soul is still stuck watching her friends. Maybe by dropping the cam recorder the girl is close to realizing that NJ is non-existing or she is dead and the deer represents the girl not in the world already.
If you watch B first the ending is a girl watching the VHS and reminiscing new jeans memories then credits appear while vhs is still playing and you can hear the girls talking. More like the ending of side-B is the beginning of side A. Also,if you listen to the melody in side-B ending, it is the same as the melody in side-A beginning. Then continuing to side A, which the girl is still watching vhs of nj girls, is like a continuation of what she is watching in side-B ending but more detailed. The ending of side-A is you don’t know if new jeans are imaginary or the girl is imagining them because she put the nail polish in minji’s pinky but when she woke up it’s pinky that has nail polish. Also, she’s filming no one. OR the girl is dead, because during the drinking fountain scene, in the viewpoint of the guy no one is drinking at the drinking fountain aside from him. Also, Minji drew her but then erased half of the drawing. Then the video ended and credits appeared.
Side-A they showed that the girl is not filming anyone. In the fountain scene, when the guy is drinking the girl is not there he is not seeing the girl and Minji drew the girl then erased half of her. Which would make you realize one of them is imagining the other. Either NJ is imaginary/dead OR the girl has schizophrenia or the girl is dead.
So if you watch it from side A to B you will still feel mv is not yet done because NJ girls are still talking. And MV will confuse you because of the emotion, the feeling it is not yet finished.

Here's what I think- New Jeans concept is about Nostalgia and reinvention. So maybe Heeseo is reliving her school days as an adult. The 6 were friends during school but something happened and they got separated. Heeseo couldn't recover from the separation and started to hallucinate things
My theory- the sixth girl(heesoo) is the camera girl of newjeans and they're all friends. But she's very introverted and shy. The girls are always together, they dance they practice but heesoo feels alone with them coz she doesn't feel like part of the group. She likes the guy but too afraid to face him. She then breaks the camera and leaves everything behind. Years later she's reminiscing the memories with the girls and smiles. This is a very straightforward way of putting it but this is what I feel about the mv. Being a part of a big friend group during my high-school years there were a lot of times I felt I didn't belong but of course I loved my friends.

Heres my theory that there was a huge accident the tragic deaths (mostly young) of 156 people caught in an Itaewon crowd which happened on Halloween day. A girl holding a camera would be an only survivor from that accident lost all of her besties and she cannot get out of the shock so strongly hold a delusion making up her friends still alive which is not true fact. Remembering those days warm gatherings with friends and cannot believe in a fact that they are all gone.
at the very last scene, seems the camera girl gets little older turns on the VHS again, shows that NewJeans members are not illusion. And seems the camera girl overcome the accidental memory but her friends still remains as a warm and bright memory.
