It's about the parasocial relationship fans share with their favorite groups, to the world it's nothing but for them it's everything, from give hope,strength, courage(since it's made for the fans as told by MHJ) . As it shows in the end she goes out with the boy and remember nj as a fond memory, like in the mv what the girl needed at that point was an escape and nj became one. But when she plays the vcr again after a long time, the girls come back. In a way nj will be there whenever you need them. It's beautiful, sad and again beautiful. I like how raw the mv is both aesthetic wise and message wise any fandom can relate to this.

NewJeans has said that "Ditto" is a song for their fans and continues the 90's nostalgia vibe. Here is my theory (similar to others as well).
In the MV, "Heesoo" is a loner, kind of an outcast. Listening to Kpop, being a fan of NewJeans is her way of coping. She considers NewJeans as the friends she wanted to have. She imagines them as part of her reality. However, at some point, she moves from this stage in her life as she develops a relationship with the guy IRL. She then lets go of NewJeans and puts her memories of them away in a box. Years later, she opens the box and watches the video --- she remembers the time that she was a fan with fondness. The MV evokes a feeling of nostalgia -- how when we grow up, we look back at the group we liked and remember how they were a part of our life at one time.
yeah but isn't it the happy end of side B version? I think in Side A's version, She never left her fictional world of K-pop. The image of NewJeans is very clear and almost never disappears, that is, reality hardly breaks into her vision (unlike in version B, where NewJeans images disappear more often because reality overlaps the fictional world more often). I think the deer also symbolizes the world of dreams, and in version A she meets a deer in a snowy forest and the whole place looks completely unreal (while In the side B version, the deer appears in the school hallway briefly and leaves, that is, the imaginary is built into reality just a little). But if I consider NewJeans as a group, they seem to be the kind of group that wants to give a positive influence on their fans - kind of wanting to give hope and sunshine to their followers, especially for fans who are going through loneliness, sadness, social anxiety, etc. I think NewJeans would want to bring a message to their fans that their music gives positive vibes to uplift people. Take time to read. DITTO THEORY (a thread): The MV started with a grown woman Heesoo, playing an old video from the past with her friends (newjeans). Flashback, when she was young, she always brings this camera around to places where she and her friends hangout and record those moment as if the members were still there. In between those recording he captures this guy. Obviously she likes him but pretends to ignore him. The scene in umbrella was seen in both side A and B with two different scenarios. The members were waiting for her decision if she would go and use the umbrella alone or go with her friends and walk under the rain together. In side A, she chose the latter, but in side B, she leaves alone.
At the end it was revealed she was aloe during the entire time. The members was just part of her hallucination. At the end of the mv she sees the deer. They were in an accident (car accident) that was caused by a deer and she was the only one that survived and her friends (the members) did not. In side B, she was slowly abandoning her camera and she was also not often recording the members. Instead she just watches from afar. Until, she decided to break the camera (to move on). But still the accident haunts her. Hence she still sees the deer. The phone ringing says (민지 Minji) among the girls she was closest to Minji. They have this special bond and she was always the one picking her up from sadness. But she has no one now since she's gone too. Heesoo, Minji and Haerin have some kind of connection They were both seen with cat, they call Haerin Kitty Kang also Minji was drawing a girl that look like Haerin while looking at the camera like she shows something other's don't know. Grown Heesoo was seen teary-eyed after the clip of Haerin was shown on the TV. The guy was probably the reason why she was able to move on. Because as shown in the scene he was always the one who notices her and check up on her whenever she was alone and crying.
Since the messages these girls have written was reflecting a "survivor's guilt." She felt she should've died with them but the girls insisted she should live and get better soon. Heesoo's (main lead) bandage written by girls. "don't dieㅜㅜ" "get better soon" "genius director ban heesoo" "OMG"♡
The deer might be a symbolism of self-awareness. (What does it mean a deer crosses you path? A deer crossing your path is a reminder to check in with yourself to make sure you are not living in the past or in the future and to realign yourself back to the present moment. It can be a sign that you need to connect with yourself on a deeper level.) Whenever she encounters the deer it could mean she's unconsciously healing from the trauma. In side B MV, the deer was seen walking away so maybe it's the sign that she's starting to move on. In the end, Grown Heesoo was able to move on from the death of her friends as she was now able to go back and rewatch these memories with a smile on her face.

There is a Korean drama also called "Ditto," which was shown in 2000. The drama is all about the love story between two people, one in 2000 and the other in 1979. The special thing is that they are able to talk to each other using amateur radio. So I believe that the MV is inspired by the drama: the lonely girl in the present can only contact the girls in the past through the camcorder. So it also explains why their uniform looks different.

Here's my theory:
A lot of the scenes in the music videos are metaphorical. In side A, we see the girls talking to Heesoo and then we see her filming them dance. She's not dancing with them because she isn't actually their friend, and they aren't actually there at her school. Her filming them is a metaphor for her watching their videos as a fan and feeling close to them. In reality, she's all alone. Her cast is sort of a physical manifestation for how she's broken and hurting (she's wearing it since the start). The scene where she goes out into the rain and doesn't use her umbrella represents how she prefers facing the pain with her idols (she imagines them all playing in the rain) rather than taking care of herself and leaving them behind. In the next scene, she paints Minji's nail, and NewJeans signs her cast because they are the ones supporting her through her pain. At the end, we see that the cast is actually blank, and her own nail is painted. So she's been imagining this by herself because she doesn't have anyone there for her. As for the deer, it stares at her just like a "deer in the headlights", so it symbolizes her fear. We see the deer in the snowy scene. That's the only time we ever see snow, so this place is not actually real but instead represents her mind - cold and barren. At the end we see that everyone finds her kind of strange for being so isolated from the real world, but the boy keeps looking at her with actual care and concern.
Now for side B: Here we see the clips of NewJeans having fun and dancing, but we don't see Heesoo filming them. Instead, we see her at one point pull out her camera to film the boy, showing that she's found a new obsession that's in the real world. The NewJeans clips indicate her merely thinking about them, as the clip of them signing her cast is shown just before she looks down at her blank cast. She is recognizing that her relationship with them isn't real, so her dropping the camera represents how she doesn't want to rely on them anymore. Then we see that she walks in the rain with her umbrella, finally taking care of herself and leaving her dependence on them behind. In the next scene, her phone rings, and if you read the caller name it says Minji. Heesoo however has her head in her arms and doesn't pick up. Then once again, there's the deer. Except this time, the deer is in the school. She's crying as she looks at it because her fear is in reality. She has to face her fear to interact with real people (namely the boy) and to reject the temptation to fall back into her old habits (Minji "calling" her back to them). Then she walks off with the boy and the deer goes away, indicating that she did it. In the ending flashforward scene, she watches the videos she used to watch when she was lonely, and she smiles because she's grateful for the comfort that NewJeans provided her before she found comfort in the real world.

Some theorize that the video shows the relationship between a fan and an idol. The way New Jeans only shows up in the camera shows how we as fans only know them as people on a screen. The video, for me, shows how we as fans of all of these idol groups could be missing big milestones in our lives because we dedicate all of our time to our idols. This is just a theory and my interpretation though. Overall, I loved the nostalgia and the first five seconds of the song give me goosebumps. Loved your reactions❤

Fans and singers are always difficult to be together in reality, but singers are always there, and sometimes people look at fans who follow singers in a strange way. I think it is. Haha Fans and singers who have always been together like that, as time goes by, the fans start to focus on other things in reality, and the distance in their hearts (I think this is expressed as a deer in the middle) will become farther away, and later on, the fans This situation of leaving will eventually come, but looking back over time, it seems to mean that during school days, the ones we were always with were our favorite idols at the time, and those idols were always in place.

Adult Heesoo rewatching her NewJeans VHR tapes is like she is going through her past idol’s discography; she looks back to the time music helped her go through hardships in life.
In my opinion the video clearly is a view on the parasocial relationships formed between idol and fans, where we really feel like they are ours friends but ultimately they are people we don’t know. Those relationships despite bringing confort and company when we feel the most lonely can also be damaging to one’s life and that is represented in the video as the girl alienated herself from her classmates, walks in the rain and dangerously backwards on a rooftop. Ultimately as she grows older, she is able to grow up and move on from her loneliness and form a real relationship with the boy on the video while also looking back with fondness at NewJeans and the comfort they brought her.
The first time I watched these MVs I started crying BADLY and it keeps giving me that kind of vibe... It's so sad but I don't know really why, it's just like something really tragic happened, I'm talking about my feelings not the real meaning of the song. The song it's a masterpiece, it's amazingly produced and every little run and decision taken for some singing parts were perfectly chosen, nothing it's just for making it sound good, it has a meaning... But yeah, I keep crying after side B.
My hypothesis for the DITTO song, by NEWJEANS. At the beginning of Video A, Heesoo grows up to watch old tapes of her friends while in school, and the group seems to have some accident, and the reason for the accident is apparently due to A stag, and during video A, Heesoo remembers the friends who died and imagined that they were still here with her. In the rainy video A sequence, Heesoo chooses not to use an umbrella, but she is in the rain with her NEWJEANS "the lost girls" and the fact that she is in the rain alone. In A word, the video A is from Heesoo's perspective as to how she can not forget her friends "because of the appearance of the deer, which was the symbol of the accident, and Heesoo used the camera during MV Side A". Theory 1. Ban Heesoo's (girl recording new jeans) cast represents a car accident Newjeans died and she was the only survivor. but Heesoo is in denial of Newjeans death and continues to film them as if they were still there through her imagination. the deer is a reminder of the car crash and her breaking the camera symbolizes her moving on.
Theory 2. Ditto is about the relationship between kpop stans and idols; Ban hee soo whose name sounds like bunnies (nwjns fandom names) symbolizes stans. stans often focus on their idols and disregard their personal life and what is happening around them, as Heesoo continues to flim NewJeans she fails to realize that they are pure imagination and are not actually there; showcasing how fans create memories of them watching and interacting with idol content often forgetting that they don't personally know idols and therefore should not base their whole life on people they may never meet. after hee soo breaks her camera she walks away with a guy from her school(most likely a love interest), it shows how fans should also move on with their life rather than give up their life growth for kpop.

It is Xmas day here but here I am LOL. So I have been watching and rewatching both through people’s reactions. Initially I thought lost friends. BUT. Now I think the girls really exist. But her relationship with them is imaginary. SHE WASNT RECORDING. SHE WAS WATCHING the video on that camcorder. Imagining she was part of the scenes.
a movie in korea named ditto was released in 2000. the story goes a girl and a guy fall in love but end up in an accident and the guy wears a cast. just like heesoo in the mv. what i think of this mv is survivors guilt. they might have been friends in the past but due to a tragic accident (relating with the deer, they might have hit in a car crash) and all of them died except heesoo. heesoo thinks she should have died with them and imagines them. if you see heesoo's cast, one of the members wrote "don't die!!"" heesoo also gets a call from minji at the end and in part b where she leaves the rest of the girls symbolizing her moving on. you could see the deer in both mvs, and a deer symbolizes a good omen, meaning a guide is watching over you from heaven (new jeans in the story are dead and watching over heeseo.) the guy in the mv is what helps her move on from the survivors guilt.

I read some theories saying that the newjeans and the 6th girl whose name was Heeso (Park Jihu) were all friends who got into accident and Heeso was the only survivor which is why she has a plaster in her left hand and she fell in depression and had to change school (the reason why the uniform are different and the video shows their memories together). She started to imagine that newjeans are still there when they are not and soon the boy help her differentiate between reality and fantasy (reason why they both were walking together at last). She also ended up breaking her camera.

My theory is wack. Those girls were her friend and they got into a car accident because a deer probably walked in the path of the car. She started to record the area where they used to hang out and imagined that they were there. However, the boy happened to be in most of the shots. When she hooked up with the boy she finally let go. The ending can be explained, maybe she did film them when they were alive which explained the VHS footage at the end. Regardless, it was well directed and edited. It plays with our emotion, the team behind this is a keeper for sure :)

The girls of NJ released their reaction video to the MVs. They constantly said how emotional they would be knowing the story behind it, hinting it was a sad one. I have a lot of theories, but one of them is that they were juniors in high school when an accident happened. The videos were actually real and recorded by the girl before they died somehow. It would explain the reason why the girl has a broken arm and keeps their memories in the videos reviving it in her memory walking around with the camera in the places they used to go. She has a different uniform because they kept being juniors in her memory while she grew up and had to attend school the next year. Or, they are imaginary friends she had to let go when starting to mature, but it wouldn't explain why she's able to actually see them in the VHS at the end. It could also be a reference to us fans and our "relationship" with them (idols) throughout the years. Or it could just mean memories of old friends who didn't actually die, just splitted apart. I'm really confused. I still have doubts about their existence. Were they real? Alive? Dead? Ghosts? Ex-real friends? Imaginary friends? Was it ezquizofrenia? Was it something supernatural? 🤯🗣

Other theory is that NJ and this girl were friends, something happen an accident thats why she have a cast and the memebers die. So this girl survive and feel empty, she is so sad and alone that she got mental issues and see NJ even tho they arent really there. Also the deer means let go the past and stay in the present a symbol of movin on through hard times. Now the girl is older and is watching the memories of being with her friends but now she is good and well.

I've gone through this lore hell hole before with Loona, can't believe NJ is doing the same to me.
The theory that makes the most sense that I've seen is that Heeseo has been through an accident, which explain the cast and lost her friends in the process, the NJ members, and the deer was the cause of it. She got into depression and can't accept the loss of her close friends and start hallucinating. A guy in her school realized of her situation and is trying to help her get through it. As you can see Heeseo in Side B, she was on the bench with nj and she was depressed, and you can see that her friends try to make her feel better but at the end of the day they are just part of Heeseo imagination, so she got fed up or something and walk away to try to ignore her hallucinating. The guy spotted her sitting with her friends but in actuality, he only sees Heeseo depressed alone on the bench. All in all, the guy tries to help her to get over the loss of her friends and slowly she's over it and we saw at the last clip she walks with the guy.
A few years later when she's older, she'll able to watch the tape and video of her friends and smile, showing that she's over it and is reminiscing of her friendship.

my theory is that the new jeans members are her imaginary friends as the members wear a diff uniform from her, and in some of the clips at the end you can see the members weren't there in the class dancing and also on the rooftop. That's why her classmates were looking at her in confusion, also in other clips you can see her sleeping on one of the members shoulders but on the next clips she was all alone on the sofa with one of her nails painted, in the other clips she was painting one of the members nails when the cat showed up. Since she had a cast on, she could possibly paint it herself, when she was walking away from new jeans with her umbrella i felt like she was letting go of her imaginary friend and in the end, she ended up with the dude from earlier.

The girl is the main female lead of the zombie kdrama all of us are dead.
One thing I noticed is that during the side B video, when she stumbles upon the girls dancing out of uniform, she kind of observe them from afar instead of interacting with them. Then she looks at her cast longingly after watching their choreography and then walks away, the girls never interacts with her, this is strange because its the only time this happens. My theory is those girls that were dancing was actually real girls she stumbled upon dancing, she was captivated by them, hence why they overlay those girl's dancing to the camera's video of the imaginary girls dancing in uniform, and for whatever reason. She imagined them as her friends, doing things like painting nails and make up, I'm sure they helped her a lot in someway but in the end she decides to let them go and destroys the camera, and ends up with the real guy. Later on she reminisces about them and remember the scene of them coming in the room with her. Like others have said I think this represents the para-social relationship fans have with their idols, while they help them get through tough times, eventually they have to let them go and move on. The writer knew his audience and was actually telling them in their face that eventually they will also have to let NewJeans go. I love this concept.
Car accident, Members died.. She's the only left hence the cast. In her head, they are still there since they are her friends. Kinda hallucinating and coping. She's having a survivor's guilt but the members consoling her to move on that's why she dropped the camcorder.. And the boy is the only one noticing it and consoling her.

My personal theorie is, that new jeans is dead and the girl (Heeseo) is mourning them, trying to move on. Years later she rewatches all the footage of her dead friends when she was in highschool.

My interpretation: Heesoo and Newjeans were friends but they involved in some kind of accident, maybe a car crash with a deer and 'all of them are dead' except for Heesoo who survived but with broken arms. She's having a hard time to forget her dead friends hence she imagining that they are still with her (but they are not, or maybe they are but in the ghost form where only she can see them?) Either way, later on she is liking this one guy and realized in order to move on, she had to leave her 'dead friends'. That's why she smashed the video recorder and walked away while using her umbrella in the rain, leaving NewJeans behind, while they just stared at her in sadness (bcoz she finally 'left' them) and NewJeans were seen hugging each other as if consolling themselves. Minji even gave a hint that they actually are imaginary or ghost (she erased her drawing to half, making it looks like the girl in her drawing is floating). Heesoo is then seen walking with the guy, meaning she has move on to live her life. Years later, she opened the video tape and still saw her friends on the tape bcoz she never forget them, they are still her friends (she just stopped 'recording them') and perhaps, while they actually didn't exist after their death, some of the things she saw maybe were actually the real experience she had with her friends before their death and she was just recalling the same thing again out of her memory with them. She was watching the video in a room where she used to hang out with them before their death.

Now let's focus on HANNI cause this girl also plays something important in this story line I don't actually know what but from what I've seen she is also important.
If you guys see both MVs closely Hanni is the one who always acts different from the rest, also she is the only one who always looks in a different place or notices Hanni first. Also when Hanni is the center in the videos, the camera or video glitch like when Heeso threw the camera and the video that is playing start to glitch and HANNI IS THE ONLY ONE LOOKING TO THE CAMERA IN THE VIDEO IN THE EXACT MOMENT WHICH MAKES IT MORE SCARY lol.
Now HANNI and HEESO could have been the only ones who "survived to the accident" because she acts different from the others and also we can see that when Heeso goes holding her umbrella while its raining and New Jeans are watching her behind is the only one wearing the same uniform as her.
Now this may seem confusing but I think that the girl that is walking with the boy is not Heeso but HANNI cause the girl next to him has short hair and the only ones there are Hanni Danielle but Hanni and Heeso have similar body types but Heeso has long straight her.
At the beginning of side B we see the parts of NewJeans running on the hallways and then the hallways alone, Newjeans riding their Bikes and then the bikes all alone and NewJeans dancing in the classroom and then no one dancing while she records.
Now let's connect
Let's say that Heeso and NewJeans were really close friends but they had an accident in which only Heeso and Hanni survived and the relationship change between them, why?? Because maybe Hanni provoked that accident that's why their relationship turned different and all those times Hanni acted different was like a signal to Heeso that the other girls were gone but Heeso didn't want to accept since they were really close 'til this became like a obsession, until she realized from all the clues and destroys the camera to forget them.
Also the boy seems to be accepting that Heeso still can not recovered from that accident and this is why I say that the girl walking next to him is Hanni because both of them are trying to make her realized that the other girls are already gone. Remember HANNI IS THE ONLY ONE THAT ACTS DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHER ONES.
Now Heeso could have been an outcast that her way of escaping is through Kpop and that made her create or have imaginary friends that turned to be NewJeans and the only way she can see them and interact with them is through the camera. Her obsession with them starts growing 'til a point that everyone notices it and believe she is crazy and when she records the boy he notices it but maybe he thinks that she has a feeling for him that's why every time he sees her she gets nervous.
Now Heeso and NewJeans had an accident while they were riding their bikes, how can that be possible??? Maybe Heeso didn't know how to ride her bike and NewJeans were trying to teach her. How the accident occur?? One day NewJeans and Heeso were out with their bikes and while teaching her, Heeso was on the bicycle while the other ones where holding her from the back while running with her, suddenly they run to the road in which a bus or car crashed them making Heeso the only to survive since in that moment they let her go and she only got her arm injured. Heeso couldn't accept the fact that the other ones were gone and the one to make her realized that was the ghost of Hanni. That's why she is the one who is different from the other ones, because she wants to tell her that they are already gone and that she can't do anything else and just need to accept it.
Now the one that Heeso is the ghost is kind of hard because the only proof is when Minji is erasing the legs of Heeso's drawing, so I don't know that one

I searched the meaning of the deer in their mv and it said that it represents how you should not be stuck in the past and always keep yourself in check, and so to relate to my theory I think they were friends in the past but something happened and so in the ending of the mv B when the deer left maybe it meant that she's now slowly moving on and there was a clip or the girl and the guy walking together but overall it was pretty open ended
