How to connect three or more monitors to your laptop

  • A five minute video that shows you how to connect a laptop to three monitors through the use of a USB video display adapter. Most consumer PCs don't have VGA anymore. Just use the video adapter and turn any USB port into a video output through the USB video display adapter I talk about in the video.
Here is one as an example. There are plenty. The one I use is no longer out there. There are better ones :) tinyurl.com/y2btyl32

don't know if anyone has mentioned already, but it would have been nice to cover the software/control panel settings involved in getting the screens set up the way one prefers. My experience is that the laptop display and a single external display can both run in "extended desktop" mode. One would then have to skip one of the other local ports - hdmi or dvi or even VGA ports - if present and simply use two USB adaptors to get the other two displays up and running. Then it would be a matter of finding software to get all four monitors (laptop display included) set up as a single extended desktop.

Modern laptops can use DisplayPort MST hubs to connect up to 4 displays to one DisplayPort output, depending which version it is, and the bandwidth it's capable of. (sometimes even more than 4 displays)
So if your laptop is capable if DisplayPort version 1.2 or later, you're good to go with MST hubs. I use that at my job, and it works flawlessly with 3 screens. (using a 4 port MST DP hub)

    1) not all laptops have vga. Its a retired technology, most new computers actually don't have vga. 2) You said that laptops cannot output more than two monitors? Weird, I've connected four to my ASUS G75 and still had my notebook screen on. And thats with no USB adapters. Many new laptops with a dedicated graphics card can run three. All laptops with a displayport connection can run three monitors as well

Obviously this is different to your setup in which three separate monitors are connected and your laptop screen is blank (black). Under the above scenario must a USB display adapter be required OR can one monitor be connect via VGA and the second monitor connect via HDMI. Thanks you for any guidance you might be able to share.

The other monitor (VGA) attached to HDMI on laptop through adapter, never comes on. In the display control panel it says "Disconnect this display", even if I change that to "Extend this display" it changes back to "Disconnect this display" and In Intel Graphics control panel under display I see only 2 displays (primary and second) there is no third, however in the list of displays i can see the third monitor listed.

2019, most laptop could only output one HDMI port, you will need that extra adaptor. It's not smooth as HDMI with the adaptor one from personal experience.

Thanks for the video! Can I ask what kind of work you do to utilize 3 monitors? I am a musician and use two - now thinking I could really use three! LOL!

+Ben Sewell The USB display adaptor plugs into the USB port, so that's not a problem.

+Ben Sewell You can do this using a device like the Atrust M202 found here www.amazon.com/Atrust-Universal-Desktop-Docking-Station/dp/B00YLUTH72/

Hey. I have an laptop from like 2013. I bought a $60 usb to hdmi adapter from "J5 Create". You install the drivers for the adapter and then it can run 1 monitor from usb port to the adapter, then the adapter converts the signal to hdmi which i hooked up to my 1st monitor. Then I simply ran a VGA cord from the output on laptop to a 2nd monitor. So there you go 2 separate monitors (1st is usb to adapter for hdmi. 2nd is simply ran off stock VGA port to a VGA monitor) and of course the 3rd screen is simply the laptops monitor. So I have a 3 monitor setup. I trade stocks so I like to have extra screens for work and research. Anyways, hope it helps.

With HDMI+VGA you can't enable 2+(more) monitors because You already have (main)display and you have aditional one, if you disable main display than you can use those two monitors.
It happens mostly when you have intel integrated GPU +- Aditional GPU because it is runing trough intel GPU than comunicating with Aditional (doesnt depend if you select in bios what are u using it is hardware solution) only is with the adapters, hubs etc but they are not 100% true real monitors they are switching(between on fast switching 30 switchs in second ) if you depend of high fps than it is not for you) Tried many solutions but not smooth enough....btw I heard about Slidenjoy(basicly laptop no power cables etc) but didint test it....and tried to google some reviews but there isnt much information

    hello friend:
One a question, why in the video, only has 3 monitors connected and the computer stay off?

    • @yordanlazarov6122
      @yordanlazarov6122 5 ปีที่แล้ว

The diode of usb display adapter and the start button(white dot on the top of the keyboard) lights up, so it looks like the laptop is plugged in. The laptop monitor does not necessarily work, it can be turned off.

He has three external monitors all of which are larger than his laptop screen. He wants three displays so he hooks up all three and disables the laptop screen. Laptops do have a maximum number of displays based on GPU memory limitations. So three is probably his maximum for his laptop.

I have a older IBM Thinkpad like you I use VGA for one monitor and a DisplayPort adapter to HDMI for the next I have a third monitor which I want to hook up what you said it's not possible to do two on the laptop however I took a VGA splitter and made it come out of my laptop to 2 monitors and they do not work as identical displays actually work as individual monitor so I have three monitors working at the same time I'm told that the VGA splitter but I paid 4 bucks for actually has enough pins to separate the monitors in to two seperate monitors
