Hi, that's a great question, I hadn't heard of that before so I had to look around to find out. According to the FDA in 2012, "Controlled clinical studies have demonstrated that ipratropium bromide does not alter either mucociliary clearance or the volume or viscosity of respiratory secretions." So according to the FDA, Atrovent does not thicken secretions. Hope that helps!
I feel like my lungs have been worse since they phased out CFCs & replaced them with HFAs. I know others who are having the same issues (but physicians just accuse us of not using the inhaler properly…even though I was able to use them properly when the propellant was CFC 🤷♀️ & I get the same poor results when using an aerochamber). I often wonder if I have a sensitivity to HFA.
@@NurseRyan shortly after I made this comment, I started taking NAC (N-acetyl l-cystiene)...GAME CHANGER!! My lung symptoms have been cut at least in half! I have barely had to take my rescue inhaler. I can't believe how well it works.
I take ipratropium bromide spray for runny nose until I get on the allergy shots but I can tell you this medication gives you high blood pressure, gives you red eyes and a couple other side effects. I can't wait to get off this stuff but I've developed a runny nose over the over the years and now it's chronic as I have to take this stuff or I'll just have runny nose all day until I can get it cured.
I'm sorry that you had a really bad experience with this drug. It can be very beneficial for some people, but sadly, the side effects can also be very negative for others. Thank you for sharing your experience with it, I hope you are able to get better soon!
Hi, I always recommend speaking to your primary healthcare provider for any medical advice. - According to Mosby's 2017 Nursing Drug Reference (30th Edition): Guarana and large amounts of green tea may increase Ipratropium's bronchodilator effect. Other inhaled bronchodilators may increase toxicity. Phenothiazines, antihistamines, Disopyramide, and the herb belladonna may increase Ipratropium's anticholinergic effect. - However, other references report "no significant reactions" I hope this helps! - Ryan
Hi Ryan! Can you please do Morphine, Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Celebrex and Tylenol? Your videos are SO helpful! Thank you SO much!
Hi Nataliya! I'm so glad you find them helpful, thank you! I will definitely start working on those drugs for my next videos.
Lately Ive been hearing my fellow nurses say that Atrovent thickens secretions. Is that true?
Thanks in advance.

That sounds awful! I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you have been able to sort that issue out by now, thanks for sharing.

Sorry, only English!
Sir Which foods and drugs interact with the ipratropium bromide?
