  • Frank Salemme, Stephen Flemmi and Peter Poulos take off on SA Rico's instructions. Back home in Boston, Detective Billy Stuart & Hugh Shields go on trial for the 1967 murder of Billy Bennett. Three years later, Salemme is apprehended in NYC, goes on trial for the 1968 Fitzgerald car bombing and is convicted. But Flemmi is free to go.
We want to note that the Matt of Boston blog is still up and running thanks to his children. Lara apologizes for referring to Matt directly, We are both aware that he passed away. Also the correct date of James "Spike" O'Toole's death was December 1, 1973.

I served time with a lot of these guys back in the 60's and 70's and was cuffed to Salemme when he got arrested for blowing up Barboza lawyer's car and going to East Cambridge Court and then back to Billerica jail. An era of old school !

Thanks for a great episode ladies. What happened to detective Stuart after the Billy Bennett murder trial? Also were Frankie, Louis and Stevie hanging out in New York and did the FBI tell Louis to get lost before Frankie's arrest which was probably arranged by Rico?

      Glad to see you back!
Billy Stuart went on to work for Earle Groper at Branded Liquors after he was acquitted. We're not sure what he did after that. Stuart passed away in 2000.
It does not seem like Louis, Frankie, and Stevie were all together in NYC at the same time. However, the doorman at Frankie's apartment building claimed he'd seen Louis about 10 days prior to Frankie's apprehension. He said they'd had a loud party at the apartment and the neighbors had complained.
It almost sounds like Frankie had a file on Louis (in addition to the 13 volumes of transcripts from the Hugh Shields trial) and was supposed to be keeping an eye out for him and report any sightings back to Rico. But that's purely speculation.

Supposedly Frank Salleme said in 1997, upon hearing in court that Flemmi had been an informer and had sold him out when on the run, " you fucked me over in 1972 and you've been fucking me over for decades"( im paraphrasing) and grabbed Flemmi by the throat. Now idk how accurate that is but I've heard it from multiple sources. If it is true then it seems like he wasn't aware of it and IF he had suspicions they were just that and not to strong. He and Flemmi were on the same cell block in Plymouth county( which holds fed inmates) and had jobs, flemmi didn't stay their to longer after this incident and his ratting became public. I mention all this because If true it seems like Salleme never really thought it was Flemmi giving him up and with hindsight that seems almost comical. He knew Flemmi knew feds from way back, and Barboza was protecting Jimmy Flemmi. Now I'm sure Stevie put his own spin on things but one wonders why as the decades past he doesn't seem to connect dots idk if he knew later on in the 80s and 90s that Bulger( Flemmis new partner) was cool with Connoly( who miraculously just happens to be in NYC in 1972)but if he knew Rico and Condon way back when, one would think it's a possibility. I also don't get the Flemmis grudge against their own and the office in general un like Barboza, or Bulger, constant outsiders, the Flemmis could be made. ESSPECIALLY Steve who wasn't as eradic as his brother. Raymond was hinting that's in the mid 60s and I had heard tho Idk if it's true( im sure you'll bring it up in a future episode) that Flemmi was gonna get made or was at least asked and that's how he knew where to give the feds the location of the " making" ceremony in 1989. Of course it hard to tell fact from fiction in any case but ESSPECIALLY in this one bc even the feds info is suspect..but again it seems Flemmi never wanted to be made and always had a grudge against them since day 1

Frankie was either naive or complicit. We'll be discussing many more times this season and next.
You are correct about Stevie and the possibility of being made back in the '60s. There was a discussion on the wiretaps between Raymond and Jerry discussing the parentage of Stevie. Jerry confirmed to Raymond that both of Stevie's parents were Italian unlike Johnny and Frankie.
As for the 1989 making ceremony credit for the Feds listening in on the whole thing can only go to Sonny Mercurio right down to him wandering around the house turning down the TV sets so they wouldn't miss a word. And yes we will have an episode dedicated to it at the end of the year.
      Thank you for listening, Justin!

I agree that it seems fishy that Connoly just happened to recognize Salleme while walking down the street in NYC. There's probably more to the story. However, Connoly didn't happen to be in New York, he was assigned to the NYC FBI office at the time.

Howie was for sure. Our FOIA request was approved and there are 9000 plus pages coming our way. Now what will actually be in them and how long that will take is another story. As for Frank, we believe that he was a CI in the 1960s. Thank you! 🤗
