  • There are lots of ways to throw a cast net, and finding the one that works for you means trying different methods. Here we show a pretty simple technique that doesn't require putting the net in your mouth or over your shoulder. Just load in one hand and throw! Enjoy.

    First of all Thank you!!!! I've been doing over the shoulder thing for years and I knew it never felt right and I couldn't get a decent circle so i gave up looking on utube. I finally came across your video and on the first throw it was a perfect circle. Now I'm just practicing without watching the video and feeling more and more confident. Good job Captain!!!

    Thank you so much, I now know how to throw a cast net, and I found this to be the most informative video. I a tip for others that may expedite how fast you can effectively throw. The net is focused on when he is releasing the net out of his hand. loading the net was no problem but what I was doing was I was hanging onto the net way too long and it wasn’t opening up but finally I realized that he’s releasing you pretty early and I think that’s the main step in all of the steps is the release. Good luck!

    My favorite way to toss a castnet. No hokie pokie put it on your shoulders dance. Quick to load and toss. I’ve seen another video of a guy throwing his 12ft just this same way and nothing but pancakes. Great instructions sir, tight lines

    By far the best video on throwing nets 6 feet and over. Thanks very much!!! You took into consideration the performance anxiety that can show its head when well meaning instructors talk about holding on to the net longer with one hand etc. You were smart enough to instruct us to put our non-dominant hand next to our chest before throwing which will by nature allow that part of the net to be released last. Genius!! Thanks again. I could not believe the results.

    • @fishingfogies
      @fishingfogies  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you so much! No doubt, holding-back briefly on the weight line with your non-dominant hand is key to opening the net. Also, since making the video, we've discovered a way to fine-tune the throw and up the "pancake" percentage! At 2:02 we "overhang" about 16-18 inches of half-net. With so many different net types, net weights, etc. 16-18 inches may not be ideal, and increasing or decreasing that length can fix a lot of partial-opening issues. So glad this method is working for you. Again thanks for watching and for the kind comment!!

    i try this method and work great, i use a 8ft black pearl 1.3, it is heavier but using this, opening is almost perfect for me, i am new on cast net, i notice that for me it is more effective hold the weight line as you explain more seconds and follow the cast net rotation, this affects pretty big the opening of the net for sure. thanks one more time

    can i throw a 10 foot net with this method? i have a 8 and do it this way bc of this video and it is wore out and id like to move up to a 10 but don't want to learn a new way to throw since I'm a weekend worrier. this video helped me out a ton learning to throw the 8 so thank you for that

    • @fishingfogies
      @fishingfogies  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have not tried it with a 10 footer, so I'm not sure. But, I think one of the reasons people use other methods for larger nets is all the extra weight. With this method one arm does most of the work, which works fine up to a point, then it's just too heavy to manage one handed. I actually had an 8' net that was too heavy for this method, and that net got re-purposed into a ballyhoo net! If you try it out on a 10 footer, let us know how it goes! Thanks so much!

    • @MattStiles-wq2hw
      @MattStiles-wq2hw 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I might go ahead and get a 10 footer and try my luck. This method works so good for me on the 8 and it doesn’t take much effort so I’m thinking i will be fine on the 10

  • @richtroxler

    I've throw several 6 footers with this method and it works great, but I've had less than stellar results with a Betts Blue 8 footer. It opens inconsistent. I've experimented with all the different component parts of the throw and have never had a full 16' pancake. The short version is that I wound up throwing it over some oysters ergo the end of that net lol, so before I buy another I'm curious as to who makes your net? Betts nets are so-so quality and I'm looking to buy a quality 8 footer. Very nice video and well produced, and yes, I'm an old fogie myself lol. I subbed.

    • @fishingfogies
      @fishingfogies  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ha! Those oyster beds are a menace. The net in this video had a bunch of oyster-hole repairs, and it had a similar ending - giant tear from submerged structure. We replaced it with an Offshore Angler Ocean Master Premium Cast Net 8ft, 1lb/ft net from Bass Pro (~$140 in 2021). It's a great net for our purposes, and it throws exactly like the net in the video. Regarding pancake throwing, sounds like you've tried a lot, but check 1:58-1:59. The length of that "overhang" can be an effective shape adjustment. BTW, you have a great YT channel, congrats! Thanks for the kind comments fellow fogie.

    • @richtroxler
      @richtroxler ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fishingfogies Thanks for the information. You know I didn't really notice the part about the over hang much because I use a little different technique with the 6 footer. Your half over hang is much higher than I usually throw and I usually only thumb 1/2 way down the connecting line. I'll try choking up on split over hang and thumbing the bottom connecting line and try a few throws with my repaired 8 footer. Thanks again for a well produced video!

      I don't have a link to the net in the video. It was old and patched, and I finally had to retire it because of large rips from oyster shells. But the replacement net is even better! It's a softer material, well made, and it throws better! Here's the link: www.cabelas.com/shop/en/Offshore-Angler-Ocean-Master-Premium-Cast-Net. I chose the 8' Radius - 1/2'' Mesh model (1 lb. per foot). But it's best to match the radius, mesh size, and weight to your particular fishing needs. Hope this helps. Thanks for the comment!
