This turned into Japanese therapy with Misa. Though it's really good advice. It's best not to fuel a cycle of self loathing by comparing yourself with another. I'm sure a lot of people(me included) watch these and always learn some Japanese, but different people will learn it differently. Thank you for the video Misa.

The other day I mentioned to my son's therapist that I was studying Japanese in my free time and she seemed so surprised - she said that must be very difficult, especially while caring for a young child! I hadn't really thought of it that way, because I am always comparing myself to people online with lots of time to study and completely different challenges than I have. It really put things back into perspective, and this video reminded me again that I need to be proud of my progress learning at my own pace 😊

It can be hard to fit in "proper" hours of study with a busy lifestyle. I've found that flashcard apps help so much. I can "steal" a few minutes, even a few spare seconds sometimes, revising or learning one or two words whenever I can. It all adds up!

I’m studying Japanese completely on my own, and made myself a super strict study schedule. It was rough, I was getting demotivated because of how vigorous it was, but I didn’t feel like I was progressing much. But 2 nights ago, I got a comment on my channel from a Japanese who wrote out their comment in japanese. To my surprise, I could read the majority of their text, and guess the rest out of context and loose kanji meanings. I was even able to write a decent response in japanese without doing any research first. Then the same night, I tried to comment on a Japanese channel, and I apologized for possible incorrect japanese. And to my surprise, they wrote out: “Thank you! Your Japanese is very good! ありがとうございます!”. I was surprised by how encouraging that night was, and I have started with my schedule again, but more relaxed, and I don’t beat myself up so much if I don’t do everything.

@@SlyGuyMorad Try playing around with your study methods. Maybe take a quick break from what you find challenging or boring. Instead, focus on your favorite aspects of learning the language. Immersion in media is both entertaining, and teaches a lot of vocab and sentence structure. Translating songs can also be fun. Maybe try thinking of what you have learned so far. At day 1, every 日本語の学生 only knew “cone-ea-chi-wah” and zero hiragana or katakana. I’m sure you are far past that now. If you haven’t yet, try checking out the Onomappu channel. Hitoki-san speaks incredibly clearly. You will be surprised by how much of his speech is understandable. The decision to continue is up to you, but just think of how much japanese you know compared to when before you ever started :)

    Hey Misa Sensei
Back in late 2019, by following your lessons, I became fluent enough to get around Japan in areas where people didn't speak English, including difficult bureaucratic stuff like opening a JP-Post bank account and registering my address at city hall. But I had to leave Japan because of a covid visa delay, and over the past few years, the fight for survival back in England took away all my desire to learn Japanese.
But last year I met a wonderful guy from Hokkaido in London and we ended up dating. It was so nice to be able to chat in Japanese, even though I'd forgotten so much. We now have a bet going- if I pass the JLPT N4 in December he's going to gift me the money that the test cost. I can't wait to get back to learning with you Misa :)

Great advice from Misa! I learned Japanese in university and lived in Japan for 16 years, and have been speaking and using Japanese for over 30 years, butI still don't consider myself fluent. I know my strengths and weaknesses. But I look at it like this - there is always someone better than you, and there is always someone who would love to be at your level. I can do what I can do. Strive to learn and improve but Msa is right, there is no one judging you. When you have the opportunity to use Japanese in a real situation, just go for it. Small successes build confidence, and you can learn from your mistakes.

I've pretty much put any personal projects of for a long while and so critical of myself. Just the advice to not compare myself to others, to be easier on myself and love myself. It's hard to, sometimes, but you're right. Thank you so much for this video. While I may not focus on learning Japanese for a while because I have a ton of other stuff to do such as learning linguistics itself which I've put off for months, improving my French which I'd say I'm novice-intermediate at in school, and speaking of which school is coming up in a few days.... I'm anxious but I know I can get everything in order. This was a long comment which you might not see but thank you. I wish that you take your advice and take care of yourself as well. Thank you.

Wow, great timing on this. I have been in Japanese Language school in Japan since April and it has been a crazy ride. School is Monday - Friday 9am - 3pm, after school I still need to study but then I'm not able to enjoy my time in Japan... We get homework and even homework during summer break etc. We are also told to ask question in class but there simply isn't enough time. My teacher told me I have the worst test scores in my class as if I didn't know lol. Sometimes I sit in my room wondering if I made a mistake by moving to Japan to study Japanese, but I have faith it will get better eventually! When I speak with Japanese people I am able to get my point across so at least I can solve my problems with my Japan life. Slowly but surely I will get there!! Thanks for the video, your videos are fun way to casually study.

I came a long way, started from watching Misa's beginners videos. From N5 to just had my N1 test. There is this realization where I know N1 is not the be all end all, im still feel im not good enough. On the flip side, i clearly remember that day after i took N5, i joked to myself "ahh N1 let that impossible dream be impossible."
But here am I, with confidence im going to get that "elusive" N1 certificate next month. With that said, I can still see myself improving beyond a piece of certificate. I wish wasnt nervous when speaking to Japanese, I wish i read more ,write more and interact more. There are still weaknesses i still see in myself.
However, there is a sense of achievement coming this far. so for anyone out there, either you just started, stuck at some point, couldn't go pass certain learning barrier. Just take a look back what you did to come this way? Fail your N2? big deal, im sure few years ago you wont even think of going to N2 test hall is possible.
I do have some humble advices for anyone who want to push through.
    1. DISCIPLINE YOURSELF.
No, i dont mean by you must study X hour every X week. That will not work. What you should do is, look up some articles/news in Japanese. Have a new anime releasing soon? Search for the japanese news, shopping for anime merch, search it using japanese, interesting stuff happened in japan today? read the Japanese Easy News.
Not only you are actively using it without forcing yourself in a study mindset, you are actively using Japanese as part of your life. And that's how you learn quick.
    2. GO BEYOND TEXTBOOK.
There many textbook out there, you cant learn them all. The best way is to get kids Japanese novel. Kids japanese novel has furigana on every page, best for anyone that needs kanji practise. You will remember grammars and words solely by just going with the story line. if you like anime movies, e.g kimi no na, tenki no ko, suzume no tojimari, pick up the kadokawa kids edition(it has green border), you get to practise reading by going along a story you are familiar with.
    3. DON'T THINK ABOUT THE STUDY.
Do you often think about study your native language? Ever thought you will forever stuck at kindergarten speech? Most likely not, as we use and grow with the language, eventually we just have the ability. So Japanese is the same. Use it often in your life, use Japanese whenever possible. Eventually, your japanese will be the same as your native, you wont even think about your proficiency.
    4. JLPT IS BAD FOR YOU.
Yea, you heard me right there. There is no point for having a certificate to determined your level. I have seen my classmate not do well in test but manage to hold a proper conversation with the natives. JLPT only acts as a scale. SO, if you can get by in japan using just N4 grammar and words, who cares about what cert you hold. And wouldn't it be better that speaking simple makes it easier for everyone to understand? Japanese is a language, is meant for communication. So as long as you get your meaning across, you are proficient.

That exercise was a really good tip! Especially for distraction during panic attacks! I’ll be honest, my Japanese practice has slipped a lot the last year or so, but I’d like to get it back and I’ve always found your videos so helpful. Keep up the good work - がんばって!x

Thank you Misa. Your videos are my favorite because you remind us to just be ourselves and keep moving forward. The different subjects you talk about are realistic and add so much to the vocabulary I am learning. I adore you. Lots of love from the Pacific Northwest 🧡

This was a lovely little video thank you so much. I really like learning the phrase about going steady is the key to winning. I also really like the idea of using the thinking of words as a method for panic attacks. I really appreciate you and all the videos you put out. ❤️✌🏻

I feel very motivated, but I can't believe what an intellectual undertaking it is to learn a language. I've been studying since February - which isn't long, I guess. I've made a lot of progress, but I still struggle to understand spoken Japanese, and speaking it is so hard -- trying to remember the vocab, then the order of words, then the tenses, then whether it's formal or informal, etc. I don't know if I'm where I'm supposed to be at this point. Is there a "supposed to be" at all? I study every day and look forward to it, but wow... It's a LOT. I also have a very busy job, so I squeeze in study where I can. I will not give up, though!!! Thank you, Misa-sensei, this is exactly what I needed to hear today.

I've been struggling with understanding kanji in recent years, it's kind of setting me back. But as you said, it's important to learn at your pace, and it takes time. I really needed the therapy from this new vid. Thanks so much, Misa-chan 💖 (hugs)

I just started watching your videos a few weeks ago. I like your approach to teaching Japanese. I have saved several videos on kanji and plan to go back through them, stopping to take notes and resuming when I have copied the kanji. I hope I can get good enough to understand videos that are in Japanese.

i really needed this. ive been studying japanese for a year now, almost two now and recently becoming an adult really difficult keeping a flow to do everything like work, college, family, obligations and etc. it really tanks your confidence when you have to work with little time to study, but I wont quit and others should realize that there is no rush.

I am actually crying..😂 what you are saying is excactly what I struggle with and I compare myself to others a lot i feel like i'm progressing way too slow. The things you said makes me really happy and it was so cute that i started out crying haha.. kinda embarrassing but I have to tell it so you know what for great video you made! The last month it's been really hard and now after seeing this I feel like you are watching me on my studies because you exactly know the things i struggle with hahah! Thanks for the great motivation this helps a lot!

I indeed feel like taking a break is bad and i feel guilty.. When i started learning i heard that you should never take a day off and so i learned everyday for a year now, sometimes i just really don't feel like learning but i still do it and this sometimes unmotivates me. I will take your advice and just take a break when it's getting too much!

I recently heard a saying on a podcast, that is relevant here. I think it was:
心配は成功のもと。 (Shinpai wa seiko no moto.)
Problems are the beginning of success.
(It was either 心配 (shinpai) or 問題 (mondai). I forget which...)

You're such an amaizing person and a wonderful teacher. I've been learning (on and off) for some time now with Japanese from Zero and Japanese Ammo with Misa, I wish I could say that I'm nearly fluent but that fault lies squarely with me and my lack of time and sometimes motivation. These are some really cool ideas I'm definately going to put into practice. Thank you, Misa! You are truly amaizing!!

I started studying japanese about a year and a half ago. While I'm still probably a month or two away from the n4 level, I'm still proud of how far I've come and how much I can understand.
However, studying japanese has become much harder since I joined the army. For 2.5 months I was not even able/allowed to read my text books or access the internet since I was at Basic Training. I am now able to study japanese, but since I'm still in training (now I'm at "advanced individual training") I work from 05:30-19:30. At the end of the day, I'm usually exhausted and have little energy left to study. That being said, I'm hungry to grind and I find time.
