I have to say, a lot of the 1988 effects hold up very well against their 2024 replacements. Just shows how the production team were still cutting-edge right to the end.

That mother ship explosion is AMAZING!!! In fact all the mothership shots are fantastic. The only place that I feel was a let down was the casket of Omega. It was way too clean and lacking in details and textures. The original looks better. So F. But having worked on the DVDs before I know that almost no time or money is given to these enhancements. I agree about the casket. The original looks like a very real, very old artefact, with barely perceptible imperfections in the way it's overlaid. The new version looks like CGI from 20 or even 30 years ago.

2:03 Worst of all is the floating casket, which actually looks less fake in the original! Admittedly, the original is slightly oversized in the wide-shot but at leas the relative dimensions are right. There's better shadows but an awful untextured model is used in the 2024 version and it looks squished along its length in the wide-shot! It reminds of the 'dead' looking Red Dwarf 3D models that they used when they dropped the plastic models for external shots of the mining ship!

I'm just gonna say it as it was mentioned on Twitter: The CGI Daleks were kind of pointless and very jarring. I think it takes away from the impact of seeing an actual Dalek prop go up the stairs for the first time. I'm unsure what it is but this one didn't gel with me when I saw that all four stories would have this special edition. I'm more looking forward to Silver Nemesis' effects as that was the story I'd wanted to see redone.

Got to say as a child growing up in the 80's with the sheer weird and wacky sort of 80's eccentricities Doctor Who involved and the sort of sound effects they used with the Dalek voices and laser shots alone, it really was a special time watching Doctor Who.

  • @bigd5090

Even the soft blur on the end credits is of nostalgic value. Not everything has to be sharp and clean especially when you've got Daleks on wheels taking corners on uneven roads! The more slick they make everything the else, the more jarring the actual practical effects are, which were very good for the time. This is the era of the Amiga 500 in our homes and the special edition should pay homage to that era and the tech available (Video Toaster, Lightwave, Deluxe Paint and Scala etc) with upscaling and period accurate tech tweaks only in my view. Hopefully the original version is included as well?

“The Daleks have a ship up there capable of cracking open this planet like an egg, but even they, ruthless though they are would think twice before making such a radical alteration to the time line.”

I still maintain that New Who has over-powered the Daleks. 'Dalek' was a great story and I understand that in order to sell the threat that the lone Dalek posed and to explain the level of the Doctor's anger/guilt then it needed to be formidable. Dramatically for that story it makes sense, and this is now a post-Time War Dalek so I understand the upgrades. But now Daleks can absorb the internet, shield themselves, rotate their mid sections, fly etc. then all of Classic Who just would not work. You couldn't hollow one out and climb inside, you couldn't throw mud at the eye stalk or cover it with a coat, you couldn't push one out of a window or down a lift shaft and Ace and her bat wouldn't get close. I miss the old days!!

Did anyone else notice they cut the line on the tv broadcast that was about to introduce the first episode of Doctor Who when Ace leaves to go find the Doctor? I was waiting for the scene to come on but was disapointed they had cut it from the special edition.

I love the new dalek lasers and other weapon effects, as well as most of the new spaceship sequences, but the original opening scene still beats the new one for me. I also prefer the colours on the original Hand of Omega; while the new one is more textured and 3D and real (and has a better shadow), it looks a bit too new and shiny, whereas the old one looked quite old and worn, as might be expected of an artefact from the dawn of Time Lord civilisation.
Best new effect: dalek floating up the stairs, the old one really needed changing
Worst new effect: Hand of Omega
Impressed by: I. M. Foreman sign fix, basically all the spaceship stuff
Left to be desired: The ring around Skaro when it is destroyed is conspicuously absent in the new one, Special Weapons Dalek's beam should've been thicker
Completely new effects: the TARDIS in the end titles, I mean COME ON

I know a lot of it is to fit in with Nu Who (Dalek weapons etc) but I DO HAVE A BIAS TO THE ORIGINAL (it's one of the few 1980s stories where I actually love the Optical FX and find they don't jar with the story; they're of their time but oddly timeless as well - The Leisure Hive and Time And The Rani being other obvious likes).
The exception is probably the linking shots of the Dalek shuttle prior to landing which is a Paintbox matte and is deeply unimpressive and should've been left out.
Battlefield needs this remake a lot more without doubt - especially the dodgy Model photography and 'Snake Guard'.

There's a huge amount of irony in a lot of the space shots. They explicitly say the ship is in geostationary orbit, and when we see the shots of earth from the position of the mothership, the size of earth makes logical sense for the required distance. Now, in violation of the onscreen dialogue, the mothership is now in low earth orbit, which doesn't make sense.

Tbh I think these are 50/50 some of the effects are an improvement such as the laser effects for the Daleks. And some better transitions of the scenes and certain details are better on the updated version such as, the Dalek Mothership being seen in its entirety. The visuals in space look better and the firing of the omega device looks gorgeous on the update.
However, I think certain VFX actually look better on the original version such as the Dalek flying up the stairs for the first time and the Dalek fight scenes, the CGI Daleks feel unnecessary. I also think the visuals of the ship flying looks better on the original and the hand of omega floating on its casket is better on the original. Xc

Side not I don't like how the 5.1 surround mix for this and on the DVD, replaced Mr Ratcliff's yell when he gets zapped by the lighting 5:39 with what sounds like a random stock yell sound. In fact that's one of many changes in the 5.1 surround mix I don't like, hen why I tend to stick with the original stereo mix. The next generation of BBC 3D animators and effects department are technical efficient but the soul of their craft is missing in my opinion. Thank goodness for Aardman and Pixar (prior to Lasseter leaving) who showed that it is possible to produce new IP with soul in the 21st century. The BBC however beside a few exceptions like the sci-fi drama Outcasts and Humans don't show it often. Therefore, if they can't do it for Remembrance of the Daleks (a classic), they should leave it alone and just upscale it. This is just my view but I am entitled to hold it.

But they are obviously computer models. None of the textures match the practical effects used elsewhere! You detract from the actual action and produce an uncanny valley effect by brushing up the spaceships and energy blasts etc and leaving the rocking Daleks alone! Better to leave it all alone and let the story speak for itself. There's no stories like this in the modern series post "the Dr was a little girl" nonsense!
