It's not a law. More a rule or maybe precept.
In historical times it was sometimes enforced for short periods. But mainly to save wheat and other important food from being brewed into beer. Today it is mainly a marketing thing.

Yep, it is called the "Reinheitsgebot" and basically says, that beer can only contain water, barley and hops. anything else cannot be legally sold as beer.
Alex Gregg it's no real law anymore though. There is beer in Germany that doesn't follow the former purity law anymore, but most still do and they usually write it on the bottle.
The purity law has very little to do with quality and more to do with limiting the type of grain used. You can certainly get poor quality beers that are completely compliant with the purity laws.

I lived in Germany 5 years, and drank mostly locally brewed beers from the areas I lived in: Leimener , Heidelberger , Pockinger, Stuggarter Hofbrau..whatever they had at the local getranke markt

I am a German and I loved this video, so funny to watch people react to the beer 🍻. And dirndls (dresses) and lederhosen (trousers) are traditional dress in Bavaria and are mostly worn to Oktoberfest and special occasions. Loved the video :)
I don’t know about the Irish, but Americans tend to associate German culture overwhelmingly with Bavarian culture. Probably because it was part of the American-controlled sector immediately after WWII, and our military personnel had a lot of exposure to Bavarian culture. Certainly more than, for example, Prussian culture.

I've been boozing to Germany and even though I wasn't struck on Hamburg, you guys know how to make a drink and how to drink. Steins are amazing! There was about 10 of us and this waitress carried all 10 at once without spilling a drop. Best thing I have ever seen.

Really should have tried more than the general ones. I am not much of a beer guy but even I know there are a lot of different very good ones from the smaller breweries that also have more variety. Those are all very common and playing it safe.
