the reason that mandy patinkin was so emotional in the fight with the duke, is because his father had just passed away from cancer and the final line of " i want my father back you son of a bitch" was him actually picturing the duke as the cancer and him getting "revenge" for his real father's death. just fyi

I know it’s a weird way to describe it, but Princess Bride is like a muppet movie with real people instead of puppets. It’s got that kind of tone if that makes any sense.

I am SHOCKED! Gary doesn't like The Princess Bride? I mean everybody has their tastes, but Gary usually is a little bit more willing to go along with a suspension of disbelief. I have to go back. I think you guys did Ladyhawke as well. Did Gary hate that one too?

I never saw this film until I was twenty. By that point I was into Fantasy, working on fantasy novel, and heavily into HEMA. All that put together made me love films like this, Excalibur, and Conan all the more. Sure I can nitpick the sword fights but its done in such a way I can ignore it and just have fun.

I was one of about 25 U.S. Marines were sitting around the barracks during a BAD rainstorm that kept us in of a Saturday night. We rant out of action movies, and someone put this into the DVD player. At first, LOTS of groaning and "Are you SERIOUS?" comments... then... laughter. And "yeah!" - and after the Inigo Montoya scene, guys were running back to their rooms to get buddies "You GOTTA come see this!". By the end, there must've been 50 of us crowded into the common area, and it got applause. AND by popular demand we watched it again. Combat veterans to a man, this movie had us laughing and forgetting the world. It's the epitome of escapism, and I love it to this day.

I never watched this film when it came out. People talked and hyped it up so much about how hilarious it was I just had to rent it from Blockbuster.
I was expecting hilarity and jokes. I didn't really like it upon first viewing.
After watching it again I 'got' it. Now it's one of my favorites.
    "The Cliffs of Insanity!!!!!"
Not sure if you've done a review on it as I have just discovered you guys, but the best 'wrestler' movie ever is "They Live" starring "Rowdy" Roddy Piper.

The "grandfather and grandson reading a fairy-tale book aloud" narrative is precisely why this works. That it's a fairy tale makes it possible to engage with all those improbable scenes. It's *supposed* to feel like adventure fantasy, and so that's how it looks and reads. Perfectly on point.
It would not have worked at all if they just presented the in-story narrative all by itself. Without the meta-context, it loses its foundation.

I was just like Fred Savage when I saw this film for the first time. A friend made me watch it and I was sure I was about to lose an hour and a half of my life I'd never get back to boredom, but I was really into the story 5 minutes in. It's now one of my favorite, most quoted from films.
It's too bad thinking back that William Goldman never wrote for Dr. Who, because Wesley comes off like the Doctor many times with the lines he's given.
One last note for fans of the film, there is a great cast reunion photo floating around the net that is worth googling.

The Grandfather's reading and the grandson's bits interjected DO ACCOMPLISH SOMETHING SPECIAL. It's all a set up for the very end of the story/film. Such a simple summing up of the book's meaning in just one line and look as the Grandfather is invited back to read the book again to the "sickie."

All I can say is if you guys saw this as a young kid, I bet you'd see it in a more light hearted, fun, and less critically analytical light. If you can get over the issues here and there, the film opens up and becomes more of an enjoyable experience. I guess it's easier for a kid to understand every character is larping and just dicking around in a fantasy story. Don't let your brain judge this as a serious film. It's on the same level as Monty Python and the Holy Grail. It was never meant to be strict or serious and we are given hits of that throughout.

To some degree you have to view the action in the movie as a depiction of how the young boy's (Fred Savage's) mind imagines the words that his grandpa (Peter Faulk) is reading to him. In this scenario, the boy doesn't know that the man in black is Westley so his vision of Buttercup is unable to do so at first either.
I have seen an analysis of this movie that says that the only story arc that matches the true characteristics of a hero's journey is that of the boy.
    th-cam.com/video/mduqXpmDpwU/w-d-xo.html
I don't recall your commenting on the final line of the story when the grandpa tells the boy "As you wish" in response to his request to read it to him again tomorrow. As we know from the early part of the movie, these words mean "I Love You."

it's actually adapted from the comedy relief b plot of a very long and very dry political novel called the princess bride so the framing device may only hold up through nostalgia but it is actually a clever nod to the fact that it is only the good parts of the book being told on the screen. Lots of stuff about the woman Humperdink is actually going to marry after he kills buttercups massive hat collection.

Can you guys review a movie called Phantom of the Paradise? It's one of my favorite films and I'd love to see you guys review it!
