Great stuff, looking forward to the next version! One suggestion I have is changing "buy beliefs" into "establish/form beliefs". Makes it a bit more immersive and a bit less obviously transactional.
Thanks! I do like that change. I think what has kept me from pulling the trigger on it is that I've currently made the non-numerical choices match the first letter of the choice text, and the 'E' and 'F' keys are physically not to the right of the 'V' key for view beliefs. I may have to rethink this design decision, because I really like having the idea of "Establish beliefs".
I'm super excited to see this amount of progress! These devlogs/gameplay previews are always a treat, I'm definitely going to take this demo out for a spin.
Excited for the demo! If I could give a suggestion, it would be to significantly buff preaching to agnostics. I think this would increase the pace of the early game and allow players to gain more control of the map quickly. This would also mean that other religions would spread more quickly and cause more conflict, which I think will likely be the most interesting part of the game. It could also help reduce the snowball effect you talked about as the player quickly gains power until they have to fight / out compete their neighbouring religions, which slows their progress. Once they have mostly taken over the map they would then begin to snowball again towards their victory condition. Personally, I would have the map change the most frequently and have establishing beliefs and particularly buying domains be rarer (maybe a player can only realistically have 2 or 3 domains in a game). I also really like the idea that when questioned during preaching a player would have to establish their religions beliefs on the spot. Looking forward to the next devlog!
Thanks for the suggestion! Once I balance the spawning of initial religions, I plan to have much fewer tiles controlled by agnostics. Ideally, I want tiles to have mixes of religions, and a situation where one religion has absolute control over a tile is uncommon. This imitates real life a bit more, having the world colored with religions everywhere right at the very start for some interesting interactions. Concerning your suggestion,. I do think preaching to agnostics should be a bit easier than preaching to other established religions on average, as they may be more open to considering new faiths than those dedicated to religions. I also really agree with the idea on buying dominions to be uncommon or rare due to expense or imposed limit. One mechanic I have in mind though is that if you get any two dominions, you unlock a combination dominion for purchase. For example, if you have earth and fire, you can unlock the volcano dominion.
@@bucephalusstudios The demonstration was really cool! The core game loop looks fun so far and it makes me curious to see what will be available as a cult leader.
@@TheYashakami Thanks dude! That's great to hear as well :) So far, I can tell you that as a cult leader you'll be able to get some more devotees to do more actions!
Dwarf Fortress for cultists is a great way to describe CultGame! The gameplay is actually pretty similar to another one of Bay12's games called Liberal Crime Squad too! Yes! Interacting with other religions is going to be a major part of gameplay. That is in the works :)
Haha, I have Irl friends who demand hand-over-fist that I put cat girls into this game, and I have previously denied them. They haven't stopped asking for them to be in the game, so now it's a bit of a meme lol. If the community unanimously desires catgirls, I may have to reconsider 😂

Well, this was just a random recommendation, but wow. The game looks very interesting, right up my alley actually.
Thanks TH-cam!

I'm happy to hear of your excitement! It should be a few months or so, but the alpha demo will be free for you to download on itch.io

Watching your videos made me want to do my own text based game. 😊
Btw, what tech are you using? ncurses?
That's great! I would love to have more people make text-based games.
And yes! Just ncurses.
You got me at cult and sold me at game.
Haha, happy to hear it!

so is this Dwarf Fortress for cultists?
What would be interesting is how your followers interact with other religions
