      Mate to me The Highwomen are pure corporate country. The lyrics maybe anti corporate country but the production is absolutely rubbish corporate country. The best music that is coming out today in all genres of music is being made by women, it's just they ain't it.... It's rubbish

    This isn’t a critique, but I think the word “pop” is overused in country. It’s at this point where if there’s any country music with an influence of any other genre, people in country music want to just call it pop. There is more genres than country, pop, and rock. Like, I don’t believe Golden Hour is a pop album at all. High Horse is influenced by disco, but disco isn’t pop. It’s more 60s/70s filled. But that’s just an example. Some of these artists you said had pop influences in this video I don’t see as pop at all. I’m not saying this is just you. It’s more of a comment on the country community. And as someone who listens to pop music and other genres, I sometimes get frustrated when people call some artists pop country.
    Like I said, this isn’t an insult or a rant. It’s just a commentary on something I have noticed from multiple people.

    • @elcidbob
      @elcidbob 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've got to disagree. Mostly because there isn't really a "pop" genre in the identifiable way that say blues exists. Like you mention disco, that was the pop of the day. Pop for the last bit has mainly been variations of rap and r&b.
      For better or worse, pop is just more slickly produced and usually at least partially watered down versions of dominate genres, and popular country has pretty much always been that exact same thing, but even more watered down and twangy accents and instruments. This is what annoys a lot of people about pop: it's a doubly cynical and soulless take on a soulless, commercially oriented take on music with a strong implication that white people are only buying it because the dark people making the "good" versions are too scary (trust, I hate unnecessarily bringing race into things, but let's be real here).
      And note that I'm not saying any pop is necessarily bad or takes less skill to make or anything like that, just that its main purpose in existing is to become popular and make obscene amounts of money.

    Wondering what you think about about SiriusXM the Highway vs regular country radio? The highway plays many of these artist and has even featured several of them as their “highway finds”. Why do you think these artists can break into that radio scene, but not regular mainstream radio? I was really surprised that my sister, who only listens to mainstream radio, hadn’t heard Ashley McBryde when I’ve been listening to her for a couple years on Sirius.

    Ian Munsick, Read Southall Band, the lil smokies, Pecos & the Rooftops and Dylan Wheeler are all going to have major increases in thier respective fanbases with new albums being released this coming year.
    Artists that are starting to build their fan bases and making noise are Carson Jeffery, Jarrod Morris, Jacob Stelly, Chris Jones and the fly catchers, and Tanner Usrey. All released music last year. We will see if they can get the buzz around them to stay.

    I think I figured out why I don't like you.
    Orville Peck.
    I need to preface this with a disclaimer that "I'm a lyrics guy". I enjoy music because it's a way to decorate time with not just sound, but meaning, and the most straightforward way to do this, I think, is through a song with introspective, enlightening, refreshing, enjoyable, sometimes vague and mysterious lyrics. Orville's songs are wonderful in these regards, both the ones he wrote (Turn to hate) and ones he didn't write (Into the night). These are songs whose lyrics form the spine of their enchanting several minutes.
    And in your review of Orville you discussed his appearance and general sound, but neglected to comment on what the guy's actually saying.
    Orville sings poetry. He drools mystery and self interpretation with every word.
    But, after an enthusiastic advertisement for de-balding gel or whatever it was, you focused on his "buzzy" mask.
    Now, that said, I would never have heard of Orville Peck if I hadn't first watched this video to see what you were talking about. So you are doing things I agree with and things I don't. I guess that's life.
    Keep up the passionate work man, even if some people have critiques.
