The Asustor looks very interesting. I have an old Synology DS414 which has served me very well (like you, I primarily use it for backups). I will definitely look at the Asustor when I bite the bullet and replace the Synology. Thanks also for the interesting network discussion. Lots to unpack in that topic!

just googled nvme nas and noticed qnap has a 4 ssd model, the market is opening up as ssd prices drop and capacities rise.. i am on my second Qnap 2 bay and i am very satisfied with it, but have noted your comment about auto update on synology NAS. Qnap has had hdmi on some of their domestic models for years. Thanks ounce again for your hard work and do please set up UK amazon 1% links as i would direct ALL my many amazon UK sales through it, as i suspect many UK viewers would also do. meanwhile a rare Paypal is on its way. Greetings from cloudy 17C Yorkshire.

I think for the price, this is a far better deal. Btw, I have been using QNAP NAS products for many years and one keen advantage it has is its management software. It is (in my opinion) far more useful than Asustor's ADM and also the actual look and feel is superior. Synology's management software is also a bit better than Asustor. Thought I don't like the present incarnation of ADM, it is useful and I am very glad I got this product. I think QNAP needs to do a bit more with their SSD models and also drop the price a bit. The Asustor offers more for the money.

Get a 10gbit switch (~$100) and you can attach both 2.5gbit cables and get over 500mb/s. Very nice. I'm looking seriously at this for a media server with Plex. Very low write need (once media is copied in). I don't need NAS SSD as I'll very little writing is my thinking.
