Starting the new year, Liverpool were in and amongst the title challengers in the Football League, but if they were going to progress in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, they would have to mount a comeback against Hungarian giants Ferencvaros, and do it on a snow-covered pitch at Anfield.

Ferencvaros won the Mitropa Cup a couple times before the Inter-Fairs Cup. It was a kind of an Alpha European Cup played mostly between Hungarian, Austrian, Czech and Italian champions from the late 20s way into the early 90s. Ferencvaros actually won a treble of sorts in 1928 whilst not technically in the same season as the mitropa cup final was played in oct 1928 whereas the domestic double was in 27/28
