This is much much than a tutorial for new mari users or mari users trying to establish a better workflow. this will greatly simplify your shaders and is borderline a master class in utilizing images and various methods to make much much more believable work. If you are someone who has been using lots of cloud nodes and noise nodes, this will change how you see texturing and separate your work from others. Thanks Alot Tom!
Checking this out after seeing talk with J Hill. I'm a blender user and love all the transferable techniques you've shared Big inspiration man, thanks for all your hard work and leadership!
Hey Tom! Really enjoy your work and I'm thinking about getting this course and a few others. I am coming from substance painter and was wondering if this course would be good for someone who has never used mari. Thanks!
Hey Joel, Thanks a lot, I always include an intro to Mari chapter and I try to explain every step of the process/tool I use so that anyone can follow along.
Looks great Tom, over the years have you explored any Substance workflows? Mari is still my package of choice but I do find the baking quite nice to then bring into Mari, especially with UDIM support now. Cheers.
I have, but at the end of the day I find I can do everything and more in Mari so I have no real need to switch it up just yet. The baking is super useful for sure. I just don't use it at home because I don't have a license for it.
Hey Tom, firts of all thanks for sharing your amazing techniques. I just want to ask what is your opinion about using SPainter instead. I am lately using SPainter more but I lost all the progress made on Mari during last few years. Thanks!
Hey, both packages are great, it really just comes down to preference. In my experience Mari handles a lot of UDIMs at high resolution than SP, so that is why it is my choice. SP does have a better viewport though, just depends on what you value more/the types of projects your working on I guess.
Hey @tomnewburycg, the tutorial looks great! I've just purchased it. However, I can't seem to open the template file in non-commercial as it's a .mra and not a .mnc file. Is there any way you could make a non-commercial file available for the template? Without it it can be difficult to follow along. Thank you!
I work in VFX and every where I have worked Mari is the standard when it comes to texturing. Substance Painter is being used more and more these days, but I prefer Mari because it can handel complex assets better than Substance does. In saying that, you can get great results with both programs, so it can also come down to personal preference.
Hey, unfortunatly I purchased this asset off Turbo Squid, so I don't have the rights to supply it with the tutorial. But you can follow along with this tutorial with any hard surface or even organic asset.
Can you please tell me the textures link that you used for dirt and breakups in the tutorial?( if you remember) I am learning from your tutorial and trying to mimic what you did. Thank you!
@Tom Newbury Wow! Thanks!! didn't expect that you would reply to it, hope I can find the same one. Thanks a lot for your help and tutorial that helps me a lot to understand the node graph in Mari.👍👍👍
The model was purchased from Turbosquid, so I am unfortunately unable to provide it. There are plenty of free assets available online to follow along with.
Hi Tom, in chapter two you talk about adding a version through the objects tab, bringing in the Mad Max model to Mari and swapping out the sphere. Is the model part of the downloads?
Hi Peter, this is a model I purchased off of Turbo Squid and then updated so it is production ready. So I can not freely make it available to the public. This process will work on any model though. All you need is a mesh with UV's and you are good to go. You can also google 'free car model' in google and there are plenty to choose from. They may just require a little UV tweaking. I hope this helps.
Yep that helps, I didn't think it would have been included, just thought I was missing something in terms of downloads when you spoke if importing through the object tab. Just finished going through the videos for an overview - excellent stuff!

Would like to hear why you prefer mari over substance? I am currently on Mari and can't decide if the switch is worth it or not...
