Painting D&D Miniatures on a Budget - 9 Paint Project

  • Painting miniatures with just a few bottles of paint is a bit more difficult, but far from impossible. And I'm talking about painting adventurer-type miniatures and not 40k Smurfs where 90% of the mini is blue, for example.
    Miniature is Reaper Miniature's Reeve Irremborg Planomap.

    If you want a really high contrast red, use the transparency of acrylics to your advantage. Paint thin layers of pure white onto your highlight surfaces that you want to be bright red, then do some thin layers of your red over the top of the white. That way you're not mixing the white and red to make pink, instead you're allowing the highest brightness of your red color to really make the surface pop.
    Basically re-zenithal highlighting with your red, over the top of your shade base.

    A friend of mine just started painting, and following the advice of Jeremie Bonhamant Teboul in his book we tried using only the three primary colors white and Black, with the added challenge of not being permitted to have any of the three primaries in the final mini... Great way of practicing color theory !

    Well done - limiting yourself like this is not only fun for a challenge, but I also think it forces you to think harder about exactly what to do and how.
    Next challenge: Five colors and one extras, and with that I mean something that will prolong the paint's working time, like glaze medium or retarder, because that will be absolutely necessary when painting with acrylics. I did this myself some time ago and picked Vallejo's Flat Red, Flat Blue, Flat Yellow, Black and White with Retarder. It was infuriatingly tough to paint this way since I thought I spent more time mixing paint than actually painting, but it worked out in the end. And it made me realize that the main reason I have 200+ paints from Vallejo is comfort - it's so damn nice to be ably to just drop some Buff on the palette instead of mixing paints to no end.

    The first thing I tell beginning painters about technique* is, "Learn to control paint consistency." Every Dr. F vid is a masterclass in this.
    *The very first thing I tell them is, "Don't skimp on brush quality."

    This video is great, for us who are still noob painters. Thanks I'm using your videos to learn painting as much as to practise my listening (I'm studying in order to pass my Cambridge B1 exam, so I mus say sorry becausr of my English). Now, just a question, you use thin layers (as Ángel Giraldez for example, maybe the best spanish miniature painter) or do you prefer thicker paint? Thanks again for your videos.

    • @ThePaintingClinic
      @ThePaintingClinic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Always be thinning. Layering technique means the thinner the paint the better.

    It's great to see what's possible with just a few paints. I haven't painted in years, recently got done minis and my old paints out! So many questions after this video even though it was really helpful!
    Do you paint on you next layer (say, highlights) while the previous one is still wet? What are you mixing your paints on? Do you add water?

    When did you switch to a wet pallette?

    • @TAP7a
      @TAP7a 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I switched within 2-3 weeks of restarting the hobby. As a child I painted straight out of the pot, often straight on to the plastic without priming, but after actually taking the time to learn what's up as an adult, it didn't take long for me to realise the dry pallette just doesn't cut the mustard at all

    • @SpottedSharks

      Playing around with it again because of the heat. I still find them very limiting and they are not suitable for heavily thinned layering.

    For skin tones, I tell people to just buy Burnt Umber, and mix a little bit of color into the paint. Then progressively add white in stages. A bit of red or pink for Caucassion and Black skins. A little bit of purple for Drow. A good deal of red for Tiefling.

    "Painting minis on a budget" using only a few of the expensive name brand mini paints. :/
    Still a good video, just not what I was expecting. Myself painting on a budget is with craft store acrylics, thinning as necessary. One 2oz bottle costs anywhere from under a $1 up to $2 depending on brand or colors/metallics.

    • @NikoTeaJay

    • @Thaxsar
      @Thaxsar 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Jonathan I'm not going to pay $3 a bottle when I've learned to properly thin non-miniature brand acrylics and achieve the same quality of paint. For one color of VMC, I can get 3 colors in acrylic paint.

    • @ColonelSandersLite
      @ColonelSandersLite 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Thaxsar I can tell you that when I was younger, I did a *lot* of painting with craft paints and I even still use them for some things so I can tell you, 100% positively that they are just not as good at the task as vallejo stuff. Their pigment density is comparably poor and their pigments are just not as finely ground.

  • @DrWhom
    @DrWhom 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Anyone who has mastered actual painting in oils or acrylics can easily paint these miniatures with only a handful of basic colours; mixing and glazing take practice to learn, but are hardly arcane dark arts. So... I always figured that the fundamental point of this miniature painting hobby was to _collect_ hundreds of pointless colours based on their, erm, colourful monikers such as vomit green and puss yellow.
