My wife and I stayed at Kimi Ryokan back in 2004. It was very clean and well kept back then, the current photos look pretty much exactly the way it was then. I would definitely recommend it.

OMGGGG I saw two TRUFFLE things so far in this video! I’ll be there next week God willing, my first time traveling since Before the pandemic. I’ll be staying at my usual haunt, Hotel Metropolitan Ikebukuro. Honestly the best place, unless it’s gotten crazier on that side since 2018. Lol! Thanks for the video John!

I discovered this video 3 months late but you sum up clearly what I was thinking deep inside me. Since I travelled a lot to Japan, I definitely prefer local area rather than touristic ones like Shinjuku, Shibuya, Harajaku. I will try this area for the 1st time, as I used to take a hotel near Shimbashi or Gotanda station. For people who has more budget, I highly recommend the Dormy Inn branch. They have nice onsen (sento), they offer a bowl of free noodles each evening from 9pm to 11pm, and the buffet for breakfast is just fantastic with Japanese & Western dishes. If you eat a lot, you can even skip the lunch after the breakfast.

Ikebukuro Royal Higashiguchi was a great budget option, I stayed there on a sale price for Christmas last year. I injured my knees and my already injured back on the way to Japan so my mobility was quite low. It was also only 4 months after a surgery that I had waited 7 years for. It was great having so many uber eats options near by when I was in too much pain to go out and being close to Ikebukuro Station.

I moved to Ikebukuro from Asakusa two years ago. I love it here. It's a wonderful area to visit or live. It has a bit (or a lot) of everything imaginable and is very convenient for getting to other areas of Tokyo. There's a Dormy Inn near me, away from the crowds, with it's own onsen that's very popular.

I forgot to mention the dormy inn. It’s a good go-to chain, always have an onsen!

I stayed in The B Ikebukuro for a few nights in May 2019. It cost me 50 euros a night. Ikebukuro is a great place to stay in Tokyo. It's right on the Yamanote and Marunouchi line, so very easy to get around.

I walked ikebukuro on my last trip on my way to the new Animate HQ building that opened up in March earlier this year. Loved the vibes!!! Im considering staying in the area next time. Love the Dormy inn so would likely stay with them. Really good brand, amazing baths, breakfast is pretty good too!

There’s Airbnb options of apartments building made just for Airbnb hosting and some of them are pretty new like 1-2 years old so the appliances and bath and kitchen are new modern and the prices aren’t too bad either for short term stays

Hotel Metropolitan Ikebukuro is my go to for the last 2 trips to Tokyo. The prices….earlier this year and 2019 was so much cheaper, I was paying like around $70 a night. I consider it my first choice and go to when i went…i guess it seems people have caught on and prices has almost tripled!

    • @onlyinjapanGO
      @onlyinjapanGO  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Yes, the tourist boom pushed prices up - supply & demand. It should be everyone’s top 3 in Ikebukuro. Super close to station, clean and affordable. I think it is cheap on certain days. We’ll see how Feb shapes up, that’s low season.

Was in Japan last month. Stayed in Ikebukuro for 2 weeks at APA hotel Ikebukuro Eki Kitaguchi. Room was small but as a solo traveler who's not in the hotel room except for at night to shower and sleep, it was fine. There was a mini fridge/freezer in the room and a kettle. No microwave oven though. Plenty of convenience stores around it and a Donki store on the other side of the street.

We stayed at Kimi Ryokan in 2016. We had a private room with a shared bathroom. The common area was nice. Definitely the tiniest room we stayed in Japan and it was very noisy at night. The walk from the station was pleasant but a bit longer than I wanted. Pretty good deal though. I guess I wouldn’t recommend it very strongly but it was fine.

I loved staying in Ikebukuro in 2018. I stayed at the B hotel. The room was small but I was traveling alone and the location was very convenient to take trains to Saitama and Gunma. I also stayed at the Prince hotels in other trips. I'd say if you're traveling alone, the hotels with prices around $100-150/night will always be good, clean and comfortable

I've stayed in the metropolitan twice and I'll say it is quite a nice hotel. It's easy to get to from the station as well. There is quite a bit to do in Ikebukuro but I will say it is a younger crowd. If I'm ever going to be in Tokyo I stay in Ikebukuro.

We love the Sunshine City Prince Hotel. it is connected to the shopping center, and it is a location where the limo bus picks you up and drop you off from both Haneda and Narita airport. Hotel breakfast is amazing. Less than 10 minute walk to the train station.

Every time I go to Tokyo, I always spend some time at Ikebukuro because my son use to stay at Itabashi. Not a lot of tourist, but a lot to do. Under Zara, there is a tea shop that I love. Don’t remember the name, but I always go there to stay away from the crowd. Funny thing is, I’ve never went to the other side of Ikebukuro station…

I love Ikebukuro, always try to stay there. Like you said, it's peaceful, when I don't feel like going to Shinjuko/Shibuya/Akihabara, there's always something to see/visit in Ikebukuro.
Lately I've been staying at Metropolitan Hotel Ikebukuro, It has been pretty good from my experience.
Also, visit Kitcher ABC, really nice tiny restaurant on the metropolitan side. 😅

Hi John! Me and my wife were so upset that we didn't find you. You just filmed in Shibuya, days after we were there. And we kind of went to Asakusa, Shinjuku, Ginza, Ikebokuro, Shin-Okubo, Harajuku, hoping we might find you (or Rion) because your videos have been really helpful to us. But no luck. (And of course we were also too busy eating and shopping :D)
Here's a thing though, we enjoyed our week-long vacation and already missed every minute of it, but time and money-wise, I don't think we'll be able to go back to Japan until 2025. But can you suggest to the Japan government, so as to reduce over-tourism, that instead of people going to Japan, you can bring Japan to other places of the world. Like here in California, there's not a lot of Tokyo Central / Tokyo Town area and if there's one, it's always super crowded. Maybe they can add more authentic Japanese places in California with authentic food cooked by Japanese? Just wishful thinking. 🙂

Ikebukuro! I haven't been there in a while. I mostly make Akihabara as my base. I thought about living & starting a dojo there (Ikebukuro) at one point. Unfortunately the job prospect didn't happen. I should do more there. Ikebukuro has much more to often.

glad to know it isn't tourist-y! I plan to spend a day there in otome road by myself and all the anime shops I wanted are all so close together :)

Not nearly like Harajuku, Shibuya and Shinjuku! It’s really a university town with a local vibe. All the kids from Saitama seem to descend here since it’s the hub for trains going that way. Loads of shops.

I recommend Kimi Ryokan in Ikebukuro. It's a really great budget option.
It's not share rooms but you do share the wash basins and showers. You rent the sleeping room for yourself or your group.

I mentioned this place at the end. Might not be for everyone, but if you’ve been in Japan a bit, understand a ryokan, it’s a good place! Maybe not for a first timer to Japan but it’s def a budget friendly option for travelers in Ikebukuro.

@@onlyinjapanGO Yes saw that later when i already posted my message. I liked it because i wanted something typically Japanese. It was also my third time in Japan and I already prefer the Japanese style hotels above western style hotels.
Kimi Ryokan was on my "Want to stay" list ever since 2016. In 2023 i finally succeeded in staying there.

Never stayed there, seems nice but also seems a little dated but maybe they’ve renovated recently. There were a lot of changes in the area the last few years over the pandemic and a little before. I do prefer Asakusa and if you want to step up, Ginza and Odaiba for the view at the Hilton.

8:20 I disagree in my search I found plenty of very cheap rooms that blur the line between Hotel and Hostel that are perfect for families. 9hours owned (formerly Grits) called 'Hotel plus Hostel' in Akihabara has a very large Family Room with a Private Bathroom seemed cheap to me.

Avoid capsules and pods and anything less than 35m2 in space! I’d recommend Airbnb if you can find one - or two rooms. You can get connecting rooms at some chain hotels, you should call ahead though. For Tokyo, the most spacious hotels are at Tokyo Disneyland! I love it there, cost performance is good too. Striking distance to the city center. Convenient to Narita and Haneda, loads of direct buses.
