The most important thing for me when picking a place for Tokyo is proximity to a train/subway station. The transportation system is so good, being close to a station gets you quick access to anywhere in and around the city.
Good advice! Once you’re in the artery, everything is like 20-35 min away.
yes that is what we are looking at too when we go there in late sept....we were looking around shinjuku as base using this way of researching....
@@49ers1975 Shinjuku is a great area. Although the station is big and intimidating, even many Japanese people get lost there. But it's a great base area with many transportation options. The Narita Express train, N'EX even stops there. There's also the Chuo (orange and yellow) and the Yamanote (green) trains. Those two alone cover most of Tokyo's most interesting spots. Be sure and get a Suica IC card for easy access to the trains/subways. Good luck and enjoy!
Hi John, I'm staying in Kanda with my family later this year. 5 minute walk to Kanda station, 7/11 next door, 2 rooms, 5 nights Y132,000. Easy taxi from Tokyo station on arrival in Tokyo. Wanted to stay somewhere with a smaller station to navigate on a daily basis. Good links to other parts of Tokyo. I think it's possibly an overlooked area. Thanks
@@michaelamundsen8597 Kanda is perfect. I stayed there earlier this year and you have access to many trains, including the Ginza, Chuo, and Yamanote. The area is lively and there are tons of restaurants. Enjoy your trip.
A location that I recommend to people is Akihabara. You've got plenty of mid range budget hotels, budget hotels and a couple higher end hotels. So there should be a hotel that matches your budget requirements and needs.
The area also offers great transportation options. As you've got Akihabara Station (JR Yamanote Line, Chuo Sobu Line & Keihin Tohoku Line, Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line and the Tsukuba Express) and Suehirocho Station (Ginza Line). So a fantastic location, if you're wanting to catch the Shinkansen at Ueno or Tokyo Stations, wanting to visit the major spots within Tokyo, cutting across the city to Shinjuku, Nakano, etc, taking a trip down to Yokohama and also if wanting to use the metro for getting to places such as Tsukiji, Ginza, Asakusa or Shibuya.
There are also plenty of food options that suits all budgets within the area and of course, plenty of shopping that can be done in the area too.
You’ve got all those tourists too 😂 but you’re right, it’s central and a good hub, 8 min taxi to Tokyo Station or 2 stops on the Yamanote line. I’d prefer Asakusabashi on the other side, cheaper, more local, better restaurants, Izakaya.
@@onlyinjapanGO Oh God I LOVE Asakusabashi! So many cheap izakayas and bars, there's Chuo-sen and Toei Asakusa for airport access too. But I personally like staying close to Ningyocho-eki a bit better because there's the Hibiya-line which is my 2nd fav Metrobline after Ginza 😁

I like the akasaka-mitsuke area. Great hub for exploring tokyo. Feels like your in the middle of the city.
Ginza and marunouchi line on the station, and connected to nagatacho station with hanzomon, nambuko and yurakucho lines.
Popular places like Shibuya, shinjuku, ginza, tokyo station, akihabara is like 10 min away.

As Solo traveller, stayed at famous 9h Otemachi on last January 2023z Reasonable and easy to walk to Kanda Station Yamanote line. Can walk to nearest Tokyo Metro too. Interesting the Imperial Palace by walk.

Stayed a couple of times in Kanda area, just one train stop north of Tokyo Station. Hotels there are mostly for business travelers so rooms are smaller and amenities are fewer. Cost though is very low in comparison to adjacent areas yet it's just a 12 to 14 minute walk to Tokyo Station. Kanda Station is just a 6 minutes or so walk away. One of the great reasons to stay there are the terrific food options. Mostly smaller very reasonable establishments. Some of the best reasonable meals I've had in Japan were in Kanda.
Just wanted to drop my recommendation here. The Hotel MyStays near Gotanda Station is very convenient. It’s literally just across the street from the station. I paid around $70 USD per night (June 2023). I got a “big” room meant for two people but it’s pretty darn small. It’s perfect for a solo traveler though.
I never heard of this area before but now that I’m here, I find it quite nice. It’s quiet yet lively. It’s not a major tourist area and the great thing is that the station is small. There’s only one line and one platform(JR Yamanote). There are larger train hubs just a few stations away. You also have access to the Toei Asakusa subway line. It’s a straight shot to Asakusa and the Skytree. Let me reiterate that this is a quiet area in terms of tourists but still super crowded with workers and students .
There are many chain Japanese and American fast food restaurants nearby. Sushiro, Gyu-kaku, Yoshinoya, CocoIchi and Ippudo just to name a few of the Japanese ones. Family Mart is downstairs and there’s an Italian restaurant attached to the hotel.

I personally love staying around Higashi-Nihombashi and Ningyocho. Easy access to/from both Narita and Haneda via Toei Asakusa line, close to many JRs and Metro stations, the neighborhoods are pretty quiet at night, close enough to Marounochi and Ginza. Plenty of hotels under ¥10K, some go as low as ¥6K on Sundays and Mondays.
…and yes I also agree with everyone else. I make sure my hotels are close to the JR stations…it just makes things MUCH easier.
I stayed at three different APA Hotels in 2019. Those were 3-star hotels but I found the amenities to far exceed 4-star hotels in Europe. Sure, the rooms are small but if it doesn't bother you, it can be a very good experience. Totally exceeded my expectations, at least.
APA experience in Japan has always been good in both Osaka and Tokyo!
I first had doubts about APA but was curious and I find it quite nice, depending which branch you book I guess. And always in strategic locations.
I tried the Higashi-nihonbashi ekimae branch and Asakusabashi-ekimae (formerly Keikyu Inn). Definitely a good choice for solo travelers and slightly "fancier" than Toyoko Inn, which I also like to use when I arrive late in the afternoon (early check-in rarely possible).

I stayed at a hotel in Ryogoku, Tokyo this January. The price was reasonable. The hotel is called Pearl Hotel Ryogoku. It was clean and cozy. I used "eco renpaku plan," stay more than 2 nights and get discount. I liked Ryogoku. My husband and I went to "Sumida Hokusai Museum," the museum for Ukiyoe artist Katsushika Hokusai. It was great. Learned the history and saw the original ukiyoe! HIghly recommended.
There will be 3 of us flying in to Narita Dec 23-30. We will have a lot of big luggages too but will store some of them at the airport for our Dec 30 departure to Bangkok. We like to keep the price down too if possible and stay at convenient, quite, roomy hotels and can easily take trains to other cities and local areas. Love to hear other hotels info away from station if they are good and affordable.

I stayed at a hotel in Roppongi called ACT Hotel roppongi, for 21 days it costed me only 110.000 yen, and it was pretty clean, but pretty small, but its enough, and then i stayed 11 days at APA Hotel Ryogoku eki tower, probably the biggest and nicest looking APA hotel ive seen, it was way more expensive but it had bigger room and was amazing.
I think hotel reviews of prices, location, access to transit are especially of interest for travelers to Tokyo. Can really affect the enjoyment of the trip. Good one.
Thanks for the video. It would have been very helpful if the map you are showing has some labels of the areas you are mentioning. It hard to follow because most those not make sense since the names of the places you are referring to are in japanese and it hard to figure out where they are on the map. I stayed at the Shangri-La at Tokyo Station. Major splurge - totally worth it!
Just remembered. My wife and i stayed in the Tokyo Station Hotel in 1971. On later trips i adjusted my budget and we stayed often at the Toyoko Inn. We mainly need a bed (and the free breakfast at this hotel chain..). BTW we stayed also once at a 'weekly mansion' near Shinagawa and once near Shinjuku.

The Toyoko Inn is a good go-to for me outside Tokyo. Even have a member's card! (I have one for APA too)
The weekly mansions are still a thing but since Airbnb came, they're not as usual. I stayed at a few when I was working as an English teacher 20+ years ago. Like a home, good value!
@@onlyinjapanGO Thanks for the response. We also have a Toyoko Inn members card, if it still valid. The last time we travelled to Japan is almost 10 years ago (age is the culprit). One thing i liked of the Toyoko Inn was, besides clean, location (often near station) etc, is that making reservation was easy and above all no-cost cancellation if you cancelled 1? day in advance. This was necessary because we did not have firm travelling plans. We planned only 1 or 2 days in advance. BTW the prices you gave in this video were they for 1 or 2 travellers? Quite often this makes a difference because of the size of the room (in a business hotel). I enjoyed you videos. Thanks.
We stayed at Keio Plaza Shinjuku. Very spacious room and right across the street from all the izakayas and restaurants.
10 minute walk to Shinjuku station.
That hotel is quite spacious, yes! They don't build them like that anymore though. Stayed there once for a job - maybe the recommendation for those who want to stay around Shinjuku.

The Tokyo Prince Kioicho is my favorite! I stay there almost every time. I’ve been in a standard room and various suites. I love that the standard room is SO special. You feel like you’re in a suite! I’ve never stayed at a hotel with such amazing standard rooms! The ground floor has a cute little mall with Starbucks, grocery store, convenience store, and an “American pharmacy” which has come in handy for me every single time I’ve visited. Any toiletries or whatever I need, I’m able to grab super easily. And the Starbucks is good if you’re like me and you need a caffeine boost to get your day started.
The Ritz Carlton in Akasaka is incredibly nice, however I have only stayed in a suite. I’m not sure how the standard rooms are like. I think it’s the same price point as the Prince Kioicho, but I think its quite a bit older/more dated. The rooms at the Prince Kioicho are a better value, but the mall attached to the Ritz is unbeatable for convenience! It’s a very large mall with lots of food and snacks and cafes, and tons of shops to browse. It’s super nice to have access to that to start your morning. I don’t think the shops are as practical as the shops attached to Prince Kioicho, but they’re a lot more entertaining to browse.
The Westin Ebisu is probably my second favorite hotel! I’ve stayed there probably 3 times. It’s definitely older and dated, but that’s kind of what I love about it. It’s got a nostalgic feeling for me. I’m not sure if I have been staying in a standard room or suite… but the bathroom was really big and nice every time! The Westin Ebisu had an absolutely incredible breakfast/brunch buffet and a reallyyyyy nice bar on the top floor with live jazz Piano and beautiful view. The area is so incredible to walk around. I really love this place.
I’ve stayed at The Prince Sakura once. It was nice. A bit dated. The lobby was stunning. Their biggest feature is that they have their own Sakura garden, so during the cherry blossom season you have easy access to beautiful garden full of cherry blossom trees and less crowds. I’m not sure if I’d stay there again, but I did enjoy staying there during cherry blossom season.

Aman Tokyo is truly spectacular. We stayed there 3 nights 5-6 years ago and the rooms are amazing. But I recommend everyone to go up and see the lobby at the 35th floor (or 36th). It is stunning.

Some info here. I have been planning a trip to Japan for the month of November. I have 2 weeks of Airbnb's booked so far. 1 week in Tokyo, 1 week in Kyoto. I still need another 1-2 weeks in Tokyo for the rest of the month. Airbnb options are very limited and the prices have been going up. I have found some alternative monthly rental sites that are more affordable. Seems like the price for an Airbnb is about the same as a hotel.
I like hostels. When I was by myself though, hostels and staying with friends, once I had an apartment with roommate out in the boonies past fuchu.
Now that I have to travel with my family I like airbnb because I need an entire apartment and finding those for short term and monthly is expensive and nearly impossible as a foreigner.
Now I’m looking at houses.

Aloha John I live in Hawaii and was checking rates for a staycation. I got sticker shock!!! Tokyo Hotels are a bargain compared to the hotels here. Even the so called bargain hotels are 200 and up. I hope you and your family make it to Hawaii and do a meet up! Would love to see you here or maybe one day in Tokyo.

Darn, just missed this tonight...Mothers Day distractions. I was standing right there last month where John introduced this video on the Maranouchi side. Stopped here from the Shinkansen from Nagoya, and headed over to Asakusa on the local line- the Asakusa View Hotel after meeting up with my Japanese cousin.
This is great. Staying at Hotel Monterey Hanzomon in June for around 11,000 JPY / night for our family.
Good area, central, good price! Never heard of that hotel - there are SO MANY!

I usually stay at Monzen Nakacho. Easy to reach with the Tozai line or the Oedo line and a lively neighborhood with lots of izakaya's. Two weeks ago I stayed at Shiomi. A better hotel but not many things to do or see in the neighborhood and a bit further away from the main station.
Great area, not far away from me, could be considered Tokyo Station budget area, just across the Eitaibashi Bridge.
I like to stay in shimbashi area. You can catch the yurikamome line to odaiba. Walk to Ginza area for late night bars. I stay at Royal park hotel if you need a bigger room. But also stay at cheap hotel if traveling by yourself in Ginza area next to tsukiji shijo area for small tight rooms but affordable and walking area of Ginza.
I prefer that area to Shibuya. It’s surprisingly less crowded and stressful than that area and the alleys of Ginza are pretty vibrant too.
Nohga Hotel Akihabara to me is awesome!
Ueno for me is the best. Easy access and walking distance to many nice places. Cheaper than Ginza and others. Other budget locations I like are Kuramae (near asakusa) and Ryogoku (sumo neighborhood). North of Asakusa is nice for hostels.

Stayed there last time thanks to your recommendation from last year. Didn’t make sense to book a more expensive hotel with more amenities since we only get to enjoy the rooms 8-10 hours a day then out all day. Money saved was then splurged on a nice private ryokan + private onsen near Fuji san 👌
I find hotels in Nihonbashi to be less than other suburbs in the city. Also Ikebukero is a place to consider.
Interesting, but most likely way less space too. That’s fine if you’re out most of the day. Ikebukuro, will do hotel guides on most of the areas of Tokyo over time.
good concept. it would be very benefitial to do areas one by one and speak about pros and cons of staying in each of them. I dont get it why people ask about the prices and recommendation when this is all available to check and book online. but what we miss is How good or bad is the area.

Exactly. When someone writes me and ask, what hotel do you recommend? I won’t answer. I don’t know their budget and to say “the palace hotel” makes me look like I have a ton of cash to spare. Everyone has different budgets but THE AREA is the key here. I do think you get what you pay for - at the Aman, maybe it’s more than the hotel. It’s that you stayed there and can tell people about it 😂 if you have the cash 💰 life is experiences, a collection of them, trying new things and learning.
Shinagawa Prince Hotel is my choice - right across the street from the station, shinkansen lines.
I wound like to Stay for three month in tokyo to walk throu all States. I dont know how big Tokyo is but is it easyer to stay one month on the one end and the netxt on the other end (like Edogawa-> Kita-> Meguro)?
Try getting a condo in Waikiki, no resort fee. When in Japan, I usually stay at the Intercontinental Yokohama Grand. Spacious rooms and costs less than Tokyo.
I’ve stayed there with Kanae, Yokohama’s older Intercontinental is a steal but looks and feels it’s age. The new one next door, is not a bargain 💴 - but it’s beautiful!

I always splurge for a very nice hotel near the end of my trips in Tokyo. The first time was the Park Hotel in Shimbashi…the next time it’ll be even nicer (hopefully).
Ah, that’s more Shiodome, the Park Hotel. It’s a good one for cost performance I think. Good location to get on the trains, close to Ginza, Shinbashi alleys for some boozing.

Hi John, I wonder, what are your thoughts on staying in Kichijoji? I currently have a reservation at a hotel there for October. I chose it largely because I am planning to go to a couple of concerts there and it seems like a nice area. I realise it's about a 20 to 30 minute train ride into Shinjuku etc. As a Londoner used to spending over an hour on the tube to get to the centre of the city, it doesn't seem too bad to me 😅 Cheers!
It’s not very central. Unless you’re doing a lot in the area, it’s a hard sell for me but I can see how you can find value in it for a night or two. So many amazing cafes and restaurants there! Great for morning walks in the park too. Love that area.

Accepting your invitation to respond if we had stayed at the Tokyo Station Hotel. Years ago before it was renovated had a chance to stay there. At the time it was very affordable. What I remember were the very tall ceilings in the room and a large shower though no bathtub. It was old and dated but had a certain charm. Jump ahead to April of 2019 when we were invited to share breakfast with extended family staying there. It was probably the best breakfast buffet in Tokyo and the succulent melons (likely Yubari Melons from Hokkaido) alone were memorable. On that occasion we ourselves stayed at a hotel within 15 minutes walking distance that was priced at a third of what we would have paid at the Tokyo Station Hotel. It was the Hotel Intergate Tokyo Kyobashi exactly .5 mile from Tokyo Station, and yes on the Yaesu side. We paid 19,040 Yen but I see today it has prices ranging from $111.00 to $164.00 U.S. per night. I can definitely recommend it for anyone wanting to stay close to Tokyo Station in a quality hotel for less than what one would pay at Tokyo Station Hotel.

@@onlyinjapanGO I'll have to email you a photo of that buffet breakfast at the Tokyo Station Hotel. Ironically on the day prior to our scheduled meet-up for breakfast we checked out the walking time to get between the two hotels and there in the lobby were our hosts we were to meet the next morning.
When I went to Japan in 2018 I stayed in a capsule hotel in ueno for about 1500 yen per night. No luxury even though they had a steam bath and a sauna but it's not like I would have had the money for more. Personally I don't care too much about where I stay. It needs a decent bed, wifi and a toilet and shower of course. Accomodation and flights are the most expensive things when traveling. It's hard to save too much on flights. However not staying at a hotel can save you lot's
Yes, but some people find capsules too claustrophobic.

We are going to tokyo in October 2023. We will be arriving in Haneda Tokyo international airport Terminal 3, 8pm 16th October 2023. Where should we stay, any recommendations please. Also, We would like to be close to train station with walking distance as we will be commuting by train/bus to various sites.

I'm on my way to Kyoto in just a couple of weeks but I'll stay my first night at Tokyo near the Tokyo Station at a place called Sotetsu Fresa Inn. It's just a bit over 50€ per night at the current exchange rates. I'll report the quality of the place once I'll get there.
So, how was the hotel? I’ve been eyeing this hotel also as a possible stay.
@@heythave Huh, forgot all about this post. It was a basic, nice standard hotel at a very good location. Not much personality, but everything was clean and nice.
The only minus was that they only had one elevator so it usually took awhile to get to and from the rooms, since a lot of people were using them at the same time.
Also a caveat on the prices, you need a good timing to get them at the cost I did. Too early or too late, and the prices go up significantly.
No kidding about capsule hotels. There is always either the one person who snores loudly, or the oblivious person who rummages through their luggage at odd hours.

I arrive tomorrow evening .I have booked in to A APA Hotel for 6 days then in to the A hostel for the rest of my stay.
Good choice, APA has laundry machines so you can pack a little lighter and do the wash a couple of times before bed. At new ones, the TV in the room had a timer to tell you when the laundry was done! That was pretty awesome. Have a wonderful t adventure!

The prices are up nearly 300% from during the pandemic, maybe 40% higher than in 2019.
Supply and demand, many hotels went under, many new ones came up, some renovated to raise the price. Yen is weak, inflation is the highest in decades.

I wonder, what most of people choose, a hotel, or an airbnb(?). In the past I remember finding some airbnb's at a really low price.
Hotel. Airbnb is not as easy here. Not as many offerings but you can find good ones - depends on what you’re looking for, area. Outside Tokyo, few airbnb. Some towns didn’t have any! I wish they’d get rid of that rule.
@@onlyinjapanGO Yes, you are right. Airbnb's are mostly in Tokyo. I searched for airbnb's on Tokyo while I'm writing this comment, and there are quite many for around 30€, and there is even one for 13€ (Ο_Ο) And most of them are around Asakusa and Akihabara, but also, most of them are shared rooms, like capsule hotels, or like the ones that you also showed in the video, the beds that are just seperated with a curtain. But, despite the fact that they just "offer" a bed, as your "personal space", they have any other accomodation that someone is going to need, like washing machines, and a kitchen. Haha.. I'm not supporting the airbnb or anything. I just think that it's an amazing way to save lots of money by staying there. And you can even choose to not have lots of clothes with you, since you can easily wash your clothes at your airblb. If I was planning a trip to Tokyo, that's what I would choose :d :D

I have found Aomori an Hakodate more expensive than Tokyo saying in July.
Many hotels went under and supply is much lower, domestic travel there is popular and while Tokyo has the rainy season, it’s still nice up there, less humidity! Survive the summer in Aomori!!
Nebuta festival is also that time and yes, IT IS EXPENSIVE!!!!!

Also Capsule Hotels often are way overpriced in my opinion.... many hostel are much less expensive sometimes even for private rooms .... some years ago I got a private room in a hostel for ~2000yen near Minami Senju station
This is about the Tokyo Station area. You won’t find that here. But you can find cheaper places in Ueno, Okachimachi in particular. Not here, near the imperial palace!
I don’t see any Patti need to stAy around Tokyo station, you can get from so many cheaper areas to here in 20 mins

$200 a night, that’s ¥30,000. Loads of options! Just use google maps and pick one. The YAESU side is almost completely new! Might be a better deal than Marunouchi.
Your recommendation is try to find the cheap hotels in Tokyo there's another app that shows all of the real cheap hotels for like $40 a night $28 a night I know you was get to stay in those big fancy hotels living on your clients but be realistic you don't know where cheap hotels are so you should investigate before you start talkin thank you

California is a massive state. What don't you not understand about staying in the Tokyo Station area which is very specific.
The hotels for 25 in any state will be run down to non liable with critters and safety. No thank you would I spend 25 a night. I value my life to greatly for that cheap of a price.
