    Aloooooha! Well done Erik! Thank you for covering Hawaii! Interesting stats. But no surprise on high take up on Advantage plans. HMSA (blue shield) is well known and trusted by locals, and pretty much all the hospitals & networks participate with them. Also, people are used to HMO/PPO’s from employer plans. A lot more economical in such an expensive state - particularly since the chance of your doctor being in network is almost assured. I worked in Medical Insurance for a long time when I lived there. Thank you again and keep a watch out for any falling coconuts!🥥

    Aloha from Kapaa Kauai. I've been following your channel for a while trying to learn what I can about medicare. My wife and I will both be 65 in 2025 so we're getting close to having to make some decisions about which way to go. Most of the people in my circle of friends here are on an advantage plan. And most of the are using Humana and really like their plans. So naturally we're leaning in that direction too. I hope you and your family had a great stay here and hope you ate some of our delicious coconuts! Mele Kalikimaka and Hau'oli Makahiki Hou!!!!!

    Glad you made it to Hawaii so you could cover all 50 states.
    Living on Maui it seemed like everyone I knew had Kaiser coverage but I was younger then and knew nothing about Medicare. Kaiser was the only affordable option for us but that was in the '70's. We always laughed when visitors were surprised when we showed them what a coconut looks like, they only saw the nut in their markets and didn't know how tough the husk is.

    Mahalo. That island is picturesque. Lots of chickens and coconuts. Perhaps go over to the Fern Gratto. We jokingly referred to the abundance of chickens as the island's national bird.

    Wow! Beautiful Hawaii! Very $$$$ to live there though, takes shiploads of coconuts to make it there! 🤣 Always cracked me up about Gilligan's Island. That Professor could make dang near anything with Coconuts, bamboo, palm fronds...But couldn't patch the hole in the Minnow? 🤣 Happy Holidays!

    Coconut: didn’t like it as a kid, but it’s ok now that I’m an adult. I’ve been to Hawai’i for meetings on Oahu several times over the years, and to Kauai and the island of Hawai’i on a family trip about 20 years ago. I’m not much of a sandy beach person, but really like the ocean pounding on the rocky eastern shores of the big island. It was the only island I ever thought of moving to (however briefly). And Volcano National Park is incredible. I prefer Kona coffee grown in HI.

    It's almost Christmas Eve, I'm sitting by the fire drinking my hot coco, which i love. You could almost can me a coco nut!
    But it is cold outside. So I'm thinking of moving to Hawaii with my Medigap plan. If I have a cancer that needs regular maintenance, like chemo, cystoscopies, surgeries,etc. is Honolulu my only bet?
    Thanks!

      No, not necessarily the case for cancer treatments. There are oncology resources on other islands.

      Big Island resident here --best to do your research regarding your medical needs. Some services/surgeries are not done on the island and this requires patients to travel to Oahu for treatment. My experience is travel is covered by the insurance --however it adds an extra layer of hassle to not have treatment where you reside. Over the years I have witnessed those with medical conditions not understand the limitations of care on some of the islands --and expect their care to be similar to the mainland.

    I’m scratching my cocconut over one thing you said about Advantage plans vs supplement in Hawaii. Doctors and institutions accept advantage plans payees out of network there? What about supplement plan doctor access, can supplement patients get doctors there?

    • @Theretirementnerds
      @Theretirementnerds  วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you for watching! 🥥
      Not out of network... there are just a higher percentage of doctors and facilities that do participate and are in-network with advantage plans in Hawaii than most areas on the mainland.
      Supplement plan patients can also get access there. With providers, it's not usually one or the other. Many providers welcome both.

      @@monicamiranda890 it's not. Advantage plans want you to think that. Get regular Medicare, get a prescription and part D. Easy.
