As an independent agent who offers both Supplement and Advantage plans with multiple insurers in my state, it is refreshing to know that there are others who do business in an ethical way. The current Medicare scam phone calls drove me nuts. I had 32 calls in one day and up to 9 calls every day during their enrollment season. I told my friends to run if the company had “Advantage” on the title.
The issue is insurance company is positioned between doctors and the patients. Why? This is Capitalism gone bad. And they collect premiums from the medical industry for liability insurance. Look at the bonuses executives get.

Erik, first, my condolences to you. I can now put a name with a face. I have been fishing all over the web, and TH-cam for the last several years in anticipation of turning 65 and having to go on medicare. You have been quite helpful recently with my questions. You educated me about what is "creditable". It's generally not medical plans, just drug plans that are the problem. You also educated me on why COBRA and ACA plans don't count as being acceptable to Medicare. Keep up the good work. I will reach out to you when I decide to retire and need a Medicare plan. Lord willing, that won't be until I turn 70. That's when I can max out SS.
You can retire at any time but qualify for Medicare at age 65 without applying for Social Security until age 70. Also, be aware that there are requirements and penalties as to when you apply for Medicare. I believe it only affects Part B with penalties, as Part A is provided without a user paid premium. I applied timely, but due to an address mix-up, my request wasn't processed until after my required time period. As a result, I was penalized and now must pay a higher Part B premium for the rest of my life.
This video opened my eyes to the background of insurance agents. This makes me more appreciative of the Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP) that trains and certifies counselors as educational guides who are not insurance agents. Every state has a SHIP network that understands that state’s Medicare plans (supplement or Medicare Advantage) and Original Medicare and Part D.
SHIP counselors are fantastic! You'll see many of them in the comments of these videos :) They do a wonderful job. They are limited on how much they can offer in terms of your help getting on plans and interacting with insurance carriers/providers, but they provide a valuable service.
Thank you for confirming what I thought about agents and supplement plans - that they require less work. I worked very briefly with a local agent, but when he gave me the wrong answer about the 12-month trial period, refused to answer a question about HSAs, and then started sending fishing texts for me to sign up for other types of insurance, I went solo for 2025. I am on and will stay on advantage plans because my wife and I have tens of thousands of dollars in HSAs which cannot be used for supplement premiums but can cover advantage plan out-of-pocket expenses. Also, we can contribute the maximum to her HSA for the next 20+ years (big age difference). Again, thank you for all your videos. They have been very helpful to a DIY such as me.
Oof! You’ll be on the hook for 20% of ALL of your medical costs with no maximum out of pocket amount . So if you have a major medical situation, example is cancer, you’ll be responsible for 20% of all of those services. Going without a Medicare Supplement or Medicare Advantage plan means you’re exposed to an unlimited amount of costs. This is an easy way to go bankrupt.
Do you have a medigap plan to cover the 20% gap in coverage? That's the kicker, as most are close to the monthly premium you already have to pay. I discovered that Medicare is expensive if you are low income like me. It's infuriating, then I have to either get an expensive medigap plan, or settle for an Advantage plan that will be a nightmare for getting prior approval, denied care, and the rest of it. And if I choose an Advantage plan, then chances are if I decide to switch back to traditional Medicare I will of course have to get a medigap plan but will have to then go through underwriting and either be denied because of pre-existing conditions, or charged a lot more per month. Good times in the US!!!!!!!!!!!!! Canadians pay about the same as we do in taxes but they get needed healthcare, guaranteed, at no additional cost. We are so screwed in the US by comparison, all so some already wealthy ____ can make even more money.
Canadians might get the healthcare "guaranteed", but I keep reading in the Comments on various channels that they can't get the more important and critical things (as far as appointments and procedures) done in a time,y manner. So those that can afford to (or cannot afford to play the waiting game), come here to the US for those things.
Thank you for the thorough explanation of how the Medicare insurance agency operations affect us, the insured. Also, it was good to see that you are professional but still human with the use of the side-eye "attractive" agent comment - 42:50. This tiny bit of humor was appreciated in context of this serious, vitally important topic. It demonstrated you are obviously intelligent but still truly one of us, trying to be of help.
My deepest sympathy for the loss of your mother and now your best friend. Life is hard but you are a better person as each taught you the principles you withhold. Medicare with all its confusing rules, timelines, penalties, etc. is insane. Before retiring, I always worked on the principal if something is hard for many, and confusing to most, then kill it and simplify. You should not have to go fishing in deep waters to find a simple answer others can understand. I feel I made a mistake his year in all of the hype and confusion of coming on Medicare as I quickly chose to retire at 69. I picked an agent who I thought was good; not that they steered me wrong, that I know of, but in hindsight in listening to your videos with honesty, integrity and transparency, I would feel I am in better hands. Possibly, I can make that change next year my friend.

Fishing--I also wanted to say that this video was helpful as I began Medicare at 69 on July 1. My independent agent seems to have done me a fine job as I listened to all you say. He guided me to a good Supplement G plan and talked me through a lot of options and pros and cons. I had decided I didn't need or want pre-approvals or being in a network. He also sent me to another agent who did Part D. He helped me find a good dental plan as well. I've emailed a few times and he always returned with an intelligent email, and not short, that answered my questions and indicated he knew my particular situation.
I was fortunate enough to have gotten an agent like that! Almost three hours and then sent me the breakdown. I signed for my Supplemental plan. After getting very ill? I am glad I did.....
@@Theretirementnerds Question--Is this the norm for an agent working with a client? -- My Medicare independent agent signed me up for all my plans over the phone! This process surprised me. I worked telephonic Medicare Advantage and Supplement plan sales for years. I closed an average of 2.4 sales per day, mostly Medicare Advantage because the entity I worked for marketed to that group of Medicare recipients. I was licensed in over 40 states and appointed with 10 companies, passed my state licensing test, yearly AHIP and carrier exams. I always considered tge offering of Supplement plans as the lazy agents product because selling Supplement plans is like shooting fish in a barrel. Many agents who only offer Supplements without offering Advantage plans or use scare tactics to stear customers away from Advantage plans, are doing a great injustice to Medicare recipients. I spoke with people who've never even heard of an Advantage plan nor offered one when they first became eligible for Medicare and spoke with an agent. Thank you for this informative and well done video. More of us need to speak out about these issues.
*Fishing. Thank you so much for filling us in on the various incentives. It is very helpful to know what the various agent incentives are. Thank you so much for your very helpful and informative channel!
Fishing 👍 I enjoyed this insight into your agency and agencies. Insurance salesmen like car salesmen have a bad reputation due to in most cases commission based pay. Having trust in a Medicare insurance agency is paramount for engaging with them as there are so many who are after commission regardless of fit for the individual. I do believe your agency is transparent and as such will do well in this minefield of medical cover in our senior years. Old people are vulnerable, trusting and fearful of the unknown which is what the unscrupulous salesmen prey on. I trust you and your agency will keep your high ethical standards and will then naturally reap the rewards from helping those in need at such an important stage in their lives. Thank you !

I am sorry for your loss of your friend. May he rest in peace knowing the legacy he left through you and those he touched.
Thank you immensely for all of your videos and the valuable information you share. This video in particular was not only an eye opener but also had me shaking my head. You know it's America when a social program (Medicare) designed to help a somewhat vulnerable segment of the population (seniors) has so many leaks that it's a piece of cake for greedy hounds (a - sleazy agents, even if a small % of all agents and b - big corporations) to confuse/mislead and potentially take advantage of customers. No wonder that for the last 2 months the bombardment of Medicare commercials has been incessant. When it's time to go fishing for a plan I'll definitely work through an agent.

Thank you for information that is so helpful for all seniors who have to go fishing for the truth in this sea of medicare insurance companies. You have a calming voice, and you stick to the facts about how the insurance business works (which most people are probably not aware of) so your information is of benefit to everyone. The whole Medicare system needs to be overhauled in my opinion. It is way too complicated. It feels like an a la carte menu with a fee for each part. Maybe that worked back in the 60's when it was written, but costs back then were affordable. Nowadays the premiums and deductibles added together makes health insurance very expensive. I know that is not your fault, but it truly gets confusing when you embark on a Medicare quest. Looking forward for more videos, they help a lot!

My wife and I have to do it for her 85-year-old mom. There's no way my MIL could have looked up plans that have her doctors and meds by herself. My wife has to make and take her for the appointments. The system is not kind to the elderly.
Medicare collects nowhere near enough in taxes. Taxes for Medicare do not fully cover Part A only. Not to mention Parts B, C, and D. Not saying there isn't a better way, but it would require either a lot more in taxes or shifting dollars from other programs.

As an independent agent who offers both Supplement and Advantage plans with multiple insurers in my state, it is refreshing to know that there are others who do business in an ethical way. I have built my business organically through referrals and do not buy leads. Taking an educational approach as opposed to a sales pitch approach allows an informed decision to be made. There’s a reason something is more costly just as there’s a reason something has a very low cost. As long as the client understands this and is comfortable with the plan design, then they feel good about their decision and I can sleep at night knowing I was honest and ethical in helping them with their coverage. Why would Medicare be so complicated to require an agent? This alone is a red flag.
There's a need to look into Senior Retirement Care insurance companies who offer nursing home care.
Always a pleasure connecting and I'm glad it was helpful :) Thank you Kevin! 🙏🎣

I’m sorry about the loss of your friend. Thanks for the video.

Believe me it's happening here in Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 I'm in good health, 👍 and I'm 68 years old, still going strong Eddie
Sorry about the experience you had. Glad you are in a plan you feel is solid and the HSA is amazing!
I have original Medicare, will never have one of those crappy advantage plans, even after retirement age.
GOOD 👍 FOR YOU 🎉
Do you have a medigap plan to cover the 20% gap in coverage?
Thank you for your transparency❤
Appreciate you watching!

Medicare with all its confusing rules, timelines, penalties, etc. is insane.

Thank you !

This is ridiculous seniors just need an automatic option. No elderly people are capable of researching and choosing among these options
My wife and I have to do it for her 85-year-old mom. There's no way my MIL could have looked up plans that have her doctors and meds by herself. My wife has to make and take her for the appointments. The system is not kind to the elderly.
@ that is ridiculous I hate this country
there shouldn't be an option. it should be free. medicare collects enough taxes if you remove the insurance company from the process.
Medicare collects nowhere near enough in taxes. Taxes for Medicare do not fully cover Part A only. Not to mention Parts B, C, and D.
Not saying there isn't a better way, but it would require either a lot more in taxes or shifting dollars from other programs.
@ ok but think about it, really think about it. Exactly at the time a person is incapable of understanding and making these choices at any level, they are thrown to a sea of blood thirsty sales people and sold to the highest bidder then abandoned. It’s called Medicare for all and other countries handle this much better than the u.s.
Big profits creates big problems.

Whenever I meet with my insurance agent, I feel like I’m dealing with a used car salesman. I always feel like I’m getting ripped off. I’ve tried two different companies and they feel the same way about them. I don’t understand the system well enough to really know what’s going on, always feel pushed into doing something. I’m not sure about. It’s very frustrating.
