    Good to see you review this plane. Looks like a great medium range test platform. Get in the air quick, get to the turn around and back quick. A plane with a mission.

    The wing area in itself has nothing (at least directly) to do with tip stalls. The lift distribution and span wise airflow over the wing do, along with the wingtip shape. The designer should have done a better job working on those things, and if they expected it carry more weight at a reasonable speed, they should have used a thicker airfoil to increase the coeffecient of lift. The Mod you did increases the CL indeirectly by increasing the wing area, so is a good simple solution. Sometimes I feel tempted to design a similar type, distance optimized twin, with a shorter span than the Gemini V2. Let's hope that the designers of the Binary can get their stuff together and make a new version with a better wing! It does look like a fun little model.

    Hello Andrew, I am getting ready to start my Binary. Question for you, should I release the flaps and configure them, or are they more bother then they are worth and I should leave them fused? For some direction I would be grateful.

    • @AndrewNewton
      @AndrewNewton  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Add flaps only if you really want to play with flaps. They are not required and I always go for the simplest setup

    I wish Sonicmodell issues another set of wings for this plane. LIke the Volantex Ranger RC plane has got 1.6 and 2 meter interchangeable wings. The smaller ones could be used for rapid racing style flying and the bigger ones for mapping, long range FPV, etc.

  • @sparrowlt

    So it works? it helps notably with tipstalls? Cause i have a nasty ASK21 glider wich is utterly prone to tipstalls ..tried winglets.. maybe they helped a bit but still very tipstall prone.. its foam so it has a step in the trailing edge.. might experiment gluing extra trailing edge with depron to see what happens....

    • @awuma
      @awuma 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can you build in some washout with the extra trailing edge? Or maybe warp in some permanent washout? Also, making the leading edge have a blunter shape (larger radius) ?

      Reduced the throws by moving the pushrod connection

    • @skupper672
      @skupper672 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks, Andrew! I did that, but I had some massive fluttering that occurred because the push rod connection was pulling through the foam on the plane. I’ve got to go back to the drawing board and reinforce that area to get it down lol. Thanks for all your help since your initial assistance in the spring I’ve had many many hours of flying. Especially the swordfish. Cheers.

  • @rcbinchicken
    @rcbinchicken 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That worked very nicely! Did you get shorter or longer flight times post-mod? I feel like you'd be pulling less amps to keep it in the air with the bigger wing, and lose some drag from better Reynolds numbers, but would lose a few kph off best-cruise speed due to increase in wetted-area drag, and then there's induced drag because you've effectively lowered your aspect ratio, BUT you're probably at a lower AoA now with the bigger wing so... Augh, overthinking it. Not sure how it would all balance out. :P What happened in reality?

    Hi Andrew, confirm you're flying without FC? if so, which percentage of aileron, rudder and elevetor would you suggest? I am going to finish my Binary this weekend and would like to try your setup. Thanks!

    • @AndrewNewton
      @AndrewNewton  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No FC at the moment. After this wing area mod my current settings probably wont be relevant for your build. But from memory I started with 30% expo all round, settled on 75% throws for Aileron and Elevator with 50% for Rudder. That gives you a lot of control so I would have 50% rates on a switch as well.

    I bought the binary to be the workhorse for some LIDAR shenanigans. I'm still in the build stage, using a dummy load to represent the weight of the payload. I noticed some major issues when trying to fly really slow and low, tip stalls in the turns, and all around shakiness. Your wing mod might be just what the Dr ordered. Thx from Ohio.

    Your Fat Wing-Mod has certainly generated heated interest into making an already good plane into something really great. For me this Binary fuselage (size and arrangement) has good potential to be one of the best aerial mapping platforms. However the Binary wing has poor lift capacity with additional weight (+350 g) at desirable cruise speeds (15m/s - 54 km/h) needed for good aerial mapping.
    Another wing-mod video from you, explaining the build process (perhaps using another wing from other model), would generate a lot of lift from this community.

    • @AndrewNewton
      @AndrewNewton  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll add it to the list Alan but all I have done is roughly hotglued 6mm depron on to the trailing edge for a quick test. It worked so well I left it like that. I must refine it one day

    It looks like your trailing edge turned the wing nto a reflex airfoil. Now if you want a serious twin engine foam aircraft try the Multiplex Twinstar. Or you can keep trying to improve Chinese half baked foamies. Good luck Andrew.

    • @MikeMPharmaCyclist
      @MikeMPharmaCyclist 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Podo, you have zero clue what you're talking about. The twinstar has basically zero fpv capability where the Binary is loaded with features including a mapping camera bay, room for pan and tilt, and easily accessible compartments for the gear. In addition, the plane has a full nav light kit available which looks incredible. There's nothing magical about balsa and glue and the twinstar just looks like a tired, boring design from another era. I'll take "Chinese foam" any day, SonicModell is a great company with tons of customer interaction and support.

    • @podoclaste
      @podoclaste 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MikeMPharmaCyclist OK for FPV space inside the fuselage, but for aerodynamics the Chinese design a lot of tip-stalling, not thoroughly tested (thus half-baked) planes. Be careful where you put your put your 300$ FPV-UAV gear, no 3-axis stabilizer will save it. Check the sad Boeing story (737 Max) for example. And the Twimstar is foam, easily expandable, FPV ready. Cheers.

    • @MikeMPharmaCyclist
      @MikeMPharmaCyclist 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@podoclaste not thoroughly tested? Have you seen all of the discussion SonicModell has shared about thousands of flight hours on this platform before it was released to the public? Maybe they're exaggerating, but the reviews are generally excellent so I have no reason to believe the platform wasn't throughly tested. Any FPV plane can go down for any number of reasons, but by far the most common is electronics failure or weather.. Neither of which have anything to do with the material of the model. When's the last time a "foamie" just disintegrated in the air? Where is the Twinstar manufactured and where's all this amazing test data you brag about? It's hilarious you bring up the Boeing 737 MAX which was designed and put into service by a multi billion dollar well established American corporation... The analogous company in our discussion would be whoever makes the Twinstar, the company you claim makes sound decisions and products.. We thought that about Boeing too. Until I see a sonicmodell aircraft vaporize unexpectedly, I'll continue to base my decisions on evidence and not some bleh nostalgia for balsa wood and glue.

    • @podoclaste
      @podoclaste 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dear Mike, you do realise Andrew Newton had to modify the airfoil. The airfoil !? How bad can a plane be when a seasoned RC pilot has to do that ? Also, be aware those reviews are actually paid for by the companies that sell the planes. Zero conflict of interest there, for sure.

    • @MikeMPharmaCyclist
      @MikeMPharmaCyclist 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@podoclaste did Andrew HAVE to modify it or did he want to in hopes of gaining some more efficiency and reducing stall risk? C'mon, man... The company is really going through some efforts to trick us into buying their 100 dollar plane kit... 😂😂😂😂✈️✈️✈️ You never answered my question about the twinstar and all of the testing data and excellent track record. I researched the plane a bit myself... cobbling together a Go pro mount on the bottom of the fuselage that looks ugly and ready to contact the ground definitely sounds superior. Did they test the plane with fpv equipment hanging off of the fuselage? 😭😭
