  • In this video we're listening to Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes. We know one song of theirs because of an 80's cover (If You Don't Know Me By Now). We're really eager to hear what else they've got. Enjoy!

When you don’t have soul, you just don’t have it. Not everyone can feel it.

Wow, still flabbergasted about the Simply Red comment. I'll just leave it at 'I guess you had to be there'.

For us disco dancers, this was a passionate song to dance to. I ❤ it!

When I was a young punk I had to hide the fact I liked soul music like this and also everything Abba , it was my guilty pleasure and as I’m an older guy now I don’t give a crap who knows I love this song , I seem to remember somewhere that this was around the time their producers figured out one of the Bluenotes Teddy Pendergrass was a better singer and frontman than Harold Melvin was , it caused lots of problems due to jealousy but Teddy eventually went solo and had a great career but cut short due to a terrible accident . This track shows his charisma off perfectly, enjoy

Although not my usual genre, you can't help but appreciate Teddy Pendergrass' lead vocals. The band also did the excellent "Wake Up Everybody".

No way that Simply Red's version of "If You Don't Know Me by Now" Is better than Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes original with Teddy Pendergrass on lead.

We like them both. But we could do a comparison video...

@@hanierfamily It will end up being judged along cultural and familiarity lines. (Mostly African Americans will pick the original and mostly Whites will pick Simply Red. (Whites are the majority) I'm trying to say this without sounding bad. Go ahead and do it and you will see what I'm talking about.

Love Philly Soul !!! (aka The Sound of Philadelphia) For some girl power from that legendary stable of Philly artists, please react to the classic 1974 hit, *"When Will I See You Again",* by The Three Degrees. There's a terrific video of them doing it on a TV show where all three girls (Degrees) are sitting on stools, and wearing gold dresses. It's on a TH-cam channel called, fecskefi, and has 2.4M views. Even if you've heard the song before, you should react to it so you can see what they look like. It's one of my favorite songs of all-time.
ps~It was also Princess Diana's # 1 favorite song. She and Prince Charles loved the girls so much that they hired them on multiple occasions to play at Buckingham Palace.

High class soul. In the UK in 74-76, blokes would go out to the disco in smart suits. This kind of music influenced that.

That's not Harold. Lol! The lead singer is Teddy Pendergrass. He had a great solo career as well until he hit paralyzed in an car accident. Check him out.

@@carladavis1473 interesting, I know Teddy very slightly from his solo career, I dont think I was aware he was a member of The Blue Notes. I had also forgotten that the name in the band in those days wasn't necessarily the singer like it tends to be now. Though, iirc, Harold Melvin *is* a vocalist, did he sing the earlier stuff?
That must have been annoying for Teddy! I'm sure I'm not the only one that made that mistake.

I love this song, the one thing that does annoy me is that the album version is six and a half minutes and the single is just randomly faded after three and a half, so the intro takes up far too much of the record and then it just ends abruptly in the middle.
