I feel so lucky to have experience Pidurangala Rock with almost nobody there. I went just after sunrise. All the sunrise crowd were heading back down while I was heading up and there weren't even that many of them.

I have been watching your videos of Sri Lanka and I felt in this episode there has been a bit of lack of knowledge. Sigiriya is not just a hike to a rock. There's lot's to learn about ancient architecture plus history. And not forgetting the technology of building a palace on the top of the rock. It would have been better if you guys did some research on Sigiriya. It's not just a sight seeing at Sigiriya like Pidurangala. And that's why the ticket prices are higher there. Sigiriya is famous as the 8th wonder of the world. And the reason is worth reading. And the reason that they don't allow to take pictures or videoing the paintings because to protect the paintings from the flash lights. Earlier they allowed but then have to stop it. Any way hope you guys had a good time.

Also, to add little bit info on the Sigiriya rock/Lions rock(LR) and the Cave temple(CT); LR was the kindom of King Kashyapa, who ruled Lanka from 473 to 495 CE. The significance is the ponds on top the rock and they never get dry out. And how they live up by going up and down. So it’s also believed they had a secrets tunnels or king of an object( ie:like an elevator) to go up. For the paintings as Paddy, says, “recording is fine” but the issue is people r selling those pics locally and internationally which diminishes its great historical value so they’ve regulated it for the sake of protecting its true value for the future!
CT’ s significance is the water drops💧 💦 travelling upwards on the rock surface. (It’s abt 20-30 degree
upwards) water dripping can be seen as they’ve placed big copper pots to collect those water.
So basically it’s believed they had a secret technique in their irrigation systems as well as overall to live up to a such an advance lifestyle.Hope this helps.

@@TheBudgeteers you guys have left out the stories, technologies and discoveries about Sigiriya. How and why the King chose this place and all the defenses they had set up (basically every small rock you see is an archer post). The automatic water fountains (which uses water pressure from the near by tanks that also takes water to the ponds on top of the rock) still works even after 2000 years. Even the simple white marbles they have used on every steps that reflects moonlight to find the way up-to the top palace. Sigiriya has lots of things to see unlike Pidurangala Rock (the one Lina and Thijs went). But in the end $30 is just waaay too much and Pidurangala has a much better view (need to walk away from the crowd) compared to Sigiriya.
TIPS: Climb Sigiriya in the morning. around 7am. and Climb Pidurangala around 4pm. for the best insta worthy shots.

No one abuses Elephants in Sri Lanka. Sri Lankans love their Elephant and consider it sacred. When there are orphaned elephants (found from jungle), mostly Buddhist temples take them up for adoption. Again, no abuse as complained by you. Chaining them - yes they are chained to contain. Elephants can go havoc and kill people like you and I. Riding on top of an elephant is fun for both the human and the Elephant. Charging $30 entrance to Sigiriya is very reasonable. It is not cheap to maintain them. How much you paid for the plane ticket and the Ministry of Crabs meal? How much they charge entrance to the British Museum? Really good video is this, Very well done, professional.@@TheBudgeteers

@@jackieblewett641 Props to the Buddhist temples for adopting orphaned elephants but in my personal opinion a wild animal should be let back into the wild after it is old enough to survive on its own. It's a wild animal so saying keeping them chained is only to "contain" them also means you are taking their freedom away. Rescuing a wild orphaned animal is great but keeping them chained for your own safety instead of letting it back into its natural habitat is abuse my friend.

Jackie Blewett not saying all Elephants in Sri Lanka are abused. Of course they’re not, but it is sheer wilful ignorance to pretend that none are.

Horses have been domesticated and bred specifically for riding for thousands of years, same with all the other animals you mentioned. Elephants have to be tamed in order for people to ride them and that involves hurting them physically and psychologically. They are subjected to severe torture by handlers to keep them under control. They can't even express pain otherwise they are tortured even further.
I understand some people rely on them to make a living, but that doesn't make it okay.

Sadly the abuse and exploitation of elephants will continue because there will always be people uninformed on the issues.
At the core I believe this issue is totally about money. What we need is for tourists to change their behaviour in order to change the behaviour of these business owners. Tourists must stop spending money on elephant shows, elephant trekking and photos with elephants. Instead, they should visit and support responsible, legitimate elephant sanctuaries. Over time there will be shift in what is the best way to profit from elephants. At the end of the day these business owners will want to take care of themselves and their families which I get. But if it becomes more profitable to run an elephant sanctuary, we will see a shift from the current business models to ones that provide elephants with a safe haven. As well as provide future elephants protection from the inhumane practices that have been the norm in recent history.
Thanks for bringing this up in your video. It’s something I care deeply about and have written about on our website in the past. The more awareness out there the better.

    • @TheBudgeteers

Thank you for the courage for posting the DBS documentary on Sri Lanka.
Hope same will sustain to publish this comment.
This is a 2500 years plus old tradition - the very close Human - Elephant interaction in Sri Lanka.
Europeans can't understand this. And you want everything changed from just one visit!
The story is not that bleak as you might think.
    Sri Lankans love their Elephant.
Elephants are not unmercifully abused in Sri Lanka. Of course there may be instances of animal cruelty - happens everywhere. Let's fight against specific acts, not an overall ban on domestication of Elephants.
Again, Sri Lankans love their Elephant and consider it sacred. When there are orphaned elephants (found from jungle), mostly Buddhist temples take them up for adoption. Again, no abuse as complained by you. Chaining them - yes they are sometimes chained to contain. The Elephants can go havoc and kill people like you and I. Riding on top of an elephant is fun for both the human and the Elephant. It is not at all a burden on the giant animal.
Charging $30 entrance to Sigiriya is very reasonable. It is not cheap to maintain them. Fully agree - not allowing to take photos/videos of the frescoes is weird and stupid, especially after paying $30! Should be allowed to those who paid the $30.
How much they charge entrance to the British Museum?
How many beef cattle are killed in one day in Belgium, what about the rights of those animals?
The meaning of climbing Sigiriya is not just to get a superb view. It is important to investigate the archelogy upon the rock and what’s lying on top. You will fathom how a giant palace with subsidiary buildings stood up there more than 1500 years ago. Look at the ruins - remnants of buildings, beautiful ponds. How did the Sinhalese pumped water 700 meters up to the top to fill those tanks? The hydrolics irrigation that existed thousands of years ago in Sri Lanka is a marvel and incomprehensible for us even today.
This is why people should climb up Sigiriya and not Pidurangala. Surely if one can afford to buy a plane ticket, they should be able to spend $30 to see the ‘World’s 8th wonder’.
    A UNESCO World Heritage sight.
Really good video this one, except the unfair assessment on Elephants and Sigiriya entrance fee.
Very well done video, very professional. Look forward to more Sri Lanka stuff from the Budgeteers.
If possible, please reply this with your comments. Let's have a meaningful conversation than letting emotions talk.

It really isn't that pricey when you consider what you pay for attractions in the West which hardly deliver the beauty and history that Sigiriya does. Everyone would normally pay that price but if they do that you would bar almost all the locals from enjoying that experience because of the low wage earning over here. For the record, we Sri Lankans pay foreign tourist rates at places like the Taj Mahal even though our rupee is 2.5:1 when compared with the Indian rupee, Indians paid Rs 10 (INR) to enter the Taj Mahal while we were asked to pay Rs 1,000/- (INR). But that unfortunately is how it rolls.

Sirigirya built by King Kashyapa. This is per Mahavamsa - written down Sri Lankan history. There was no king called Ravana - a Hindu mythical character. Some Indians believe in Ramayanaya. Sinhala civilization started around 2600 years ago upon arrival of Prince Vijaya from North India. Ven Mihindu brought Buddhism to Sri Lanka from North India, the Sinhala King being Devanam Piya Thissa. The whole country became Buddhist that day.
    Tamils and Muslims came afterwards.
Budgeteers want elephant domestication stopped. This is looking at the issue from colonial perspective. You people should campaign for the closure of all zoos and circuses in Europe, USA and Australia. Elephants are chained in those places. Just because you visited Sri Lanka, you want a 2500 custom to be scrapped just like that! Wow!!
Taking videos/photos of people and then posting on TH-cam without their consent to make documentaries is equally unethical. We note you make profits from exposing us without our knowledge and consent.

horse riding is also unethical. why you guys only talking about elephant riding. according to research Horses are herd animals and enjoy living for reasons of their own. They can't consent to be ridden by people-and if they could, they'd likely ask folks to hop off their backs. Horse riding only benefits one party, and the beneficiary certainly isn't the one being ridden. ( you guys ride horse , eat meat and talking about elephant riding .. what is these double standards). (It was determined that when riding bareback certain areas on the horse's back showed high levels of pressure. Ultimately, they can cause pain and tissue damage to the muscle fibers because of their intensity. It was especially noticeable when the seat bones came down on the horse's back. )
(Elephant riding has been practiced in South and Southeast Asia for thousands of years. Because horses and camels are extremely rare in Sri Lanka, elephant riding has been practiced for thousands of years.)
It is foolish to say that it is wrong to ride elephants while riding horses. Because riding horses is also immoral. (Horses are tortured and trained to compete, running fast until they spit, and then being shot when they are too weak to run. Thus, riding horses is more inhumane than riding elephants. It is ridiculous to agree to ride horses.) Avoid treating different animals differently because of) ( If riding elephants is wrong, riding horses is also wrong. If riding horses is right, then riding elephants is also right.) !!!!! ( This was thrown to raise awareness, not anger. Please treat all animals equally ) ( good luck guys)

With tourists numbers severely affected by the Easter Sunday attack, Sri Lanka should simply scrap the two tier price system for foreigners & locals & introduce a one price for all policy for all its tourist attractions.
Not only will this generate an enormous amount of goodwill, it will attract even more to these historical sights. As we see from the comments many tourists are simply avoiding visiting these places due to the price discrepancy. So what is the point of this exercise when it's simply losing revenue ?

Elephants are such a big part of the Perahera and the Perahera is an important part of Sri Lankan culture. Just wondering how you guys feel about that? I, myself have very mixed feeling about it.

I guess they prohibit using cameras entirely because someone could come in and say they're just recording a video, and then they'll switch modes and sneak a photo or two. And sometimes the flash might go off when you think you're taking a normal photo, especially if you set it to automatic.

Elephants are being used for different tasks like carrying heavy things, in religious parades and for travelling in SL for over 5000 years. They are being well looked after and cared for. Just because it’s in a chain doesn’t particularly mean it’s being ill treated. Sometimes they are chained for the safety of visitors. However, I am against animal torture. Animals like Cows, chickens and sheep are being tortured in numbers in farms around the world. Why single out an elephant? They may be trained like training a dog or a cat. But certainly not killed to be eaten or deprived of its mother’s milk like they do to cows. Even the Royal family in England hunt wild animals for fun... 🤬

  • @enda03

I fully agree on the elephant abuse - awful. Now, I have been to Sigiriya Rock a few years ago (think it cost $25 then) but it was definitely worth it. Sometimes in life you have to bite the bullet and pay the price. Any Westerner who can afford to visit Sri Lanka can afford to pay the entry to fee to what is a world class attraction. The money is being reinvested in maintenance etc. I would skip Pholonaruwa though...

  • @susanthafernando6383

If the Budgeteers want a “challenge” then surely you can demonstrate your prowess by being able to travel somewhere like Japan on less than $1000. You certainly won’t need to take 1 month off work 😂 also, Japan is awesome.
