  • Smoke and fire protection in the home begins with the proper installation of a functioning detector. Universal Security Instruments has made it a priority to provide the necessary information and smoke and fire safety equipment needed to safeguard families. To ensure optimal levels in smoke and fire protection, you’re going to want to transition from the USI-1204 to the USI 5304 Electric Hardwired Ionization Smoke and Fire Alarm with Battery Backup. Doing this will ensure that you are properly protected from the many dangers linked to the undetected presence of smoke and fire. The actual process of replacing these USI Smoke and Fire Alarms is relatively simple and straightforward. To give you a better idea, we’ll be detailing the process step by step.
    Step One: Removing the 1204
To begin, you’ll want to turn off the electricity. You'll know the power is off when the green LED light on the alarm is no longer lit. Next, you’ll want to twist off the front of the USI-1204. You’ll then want to disconnect the alarm from the front of its base. You’ll need a screwdriver for the next step as you’ll be unscrewing the 1204 base from the wall. You’ll want to avoid removing the screws from the wall as you’ll be using them to mount the 5304. Once the screws are loose, you can twist the base off entirely. This will lead you to pulling down the connected wire harness that exposes the wire nuts. You’re going to want to unscrew all of the wire nuts one at a time. Place them to the side as we’ll be using them again briefly. Once the wire nuts are disconnected, you’ll be able to remove the 1204 from the wall.
    Step Two: Installing the 5304
Before you begin, you'll want to remove the dust cover from the 5304. You'll then notice a battery pull tab on the side of the alarm. Pulling this straight off will initialize your alarm. You can test your alarm by pressing the Test Button to make sure it's operating accordingly. You’ll begin by installing the 5304’s mounting bracket to the screws still attached to the wall. Unlike the previous model, the USI 5304 comes equipped with a quick connector. You’ll be using this quick connector to connect the corresponding wires to each other with the screw wire nuts. Once they’re connected, you can push the AC wires into the electrical box. You can now plug in the quick connector into the back of the alarm. Be sure to snap the the connector in tightly to ensure everything is properly connected. You can now twist the alarm into the mounting bracket you secured earlier. Do not turn on the breaker until this alarm and any others are connected. It’s now safe to flip your breaker back on. Remember the Test Button we pressed earlier, you'll want to press that again to make sure the alarm is operating (also check the LED). This alarm and any others that are interconnected should sound off. And that’s it. Your USI 5304 Smoke & Fire Alarm is set and installed.
