Hello Jeff, although this video is 9 years old it is still so helpful. I needed info for my 07 85 SX open chamber forks and there you were with a good video. Thank you
Thank you so much for your video ! You are the only one who explained how to set up the oil level exactly on old WP forks. I did it today and it worked beautifully :)
Thank you for the helpful video. its June 2019, and I am replacing the fluid on my 2015 KTM 690 Enduro. This information was very helpful. 5w fork oil; 120mm air chamber length with the leg collapsed.
Jeff, great video, thanks. 1. what size wrench are you using for the hydr.stop? 2. do you find the air chamber length, from top of the tube, after you 'forced all the oil into the system'? 3. do you hold the hydr. stop or piston to remove the screw cap?
Hi, great information there, did I hear you right that the depth if your syringe was set at 120mm, have sx125 wp open chamber, just confirming depth of oil extraction tube length, cheers Jason.
Hi sir is this same procedure for KTM Duke 200 ? And one more question sir KTM Duke 200 bikes front suspension very had so how I can make smooth have you any idea pl make one more video sir on my bike
Hi Jeff thank you for your videos. You do a great job. I have a small problem, and I am hoping you can shade some light on what I have done wrong. I have a 2020 1290 Super Adventure R. When I was pouring out the oil on the fork tube, right tube with rebound adjuster, and a small spring, and plastic needle, or valve came out. It dose show up in any parts list, and can not get the dealer to tell me anything. I put it back in the way I think it should go, but not sure what is correct. The bike rides fine, but my adjuster wont stop turning. I stop when i hit 60 clicks. I don't know what is wrong. I changes the springs is the only change I did. Have you seen the two parts I am talking about? Thanks for any help.
Hello: The spring goes in first then the needle and the long small diameter aluminum tube. The clicker keeps turning because you have the parts in the wrong order and the cap is not bottomed onto the spindle. The clicker adjustment knob is attached to a brass (sometimes plastic) piece the pushes on the tube. That brass piece has come out of the cap and needs reinstalled.
I have read in your comments below that a KTM 125 09 is 120mm from the top is that was same for 2004? I do believe the 98 to 2007 models all sheared the same forks so should all be the same spec.
Does this method of putting out air (bubbles) from fork tube also works on conventional forks like WP Extreme 50. Or do I have to pull up and cover with hand in the mean time? Like the opposite. Thanks for the answer
is the clicker turned open all the way left before installing or disassembling? i have the same old system and one has no rebound brake, its super fast, but the other suspension super slow
Stock is 100mm. The range is 80mm-130mm. If you installed HD springs you will need to lower the height to compensate for the larger wire diameter which displaces more fluid.
Whats the oil height for the 2013 200xc-w? 22mm from the top as well? I'm confused because User Manual says 620 ml or 20.96 fl. oz. but the Fork Service manual shows to suck out oil but doesn't specify the value. Many Thanks
2 questions - 1. Where is the oil level measured from? I assumed it was from the top of the outside tube but was told you measure from the inside tube. 2. My cap bottoms against the 22mm double-flanged nut, not the threaded rod. What's going on?
The oil level is measured with the fork tube fully compressed and from the top edge of the outside or upper tube mate. This can be seen by when he inserts the oil suction tool and the block sits on top of the fork tube.
120mm from the edge of the fork slider tube. I use the damper rod like a dip stick on a car, the rod sits pretty much flush with the top of the slider when both are compressed so I measure from the end and mark it at the height I want. Then i slowly fill the fork making sure to pump the air out, once the oil reaches my mark and no more bubbles come out I know that the level is correct.
My 04 takes approx 590-600ml per leg when dry, the reason you set these by height and not volume is because it is not guaranteed that all the old oil comes out by pumping the forks.
i have a 2014 ktm superduke and looking to do a service next week but the manual only says 660ml of oil no specific height. any recommendations on height?
Is it normal for a set of these forks to have different preload spacers between fork legs? The right fork only had one thick preload spacer, while the left had a thick and thin preload spacer. I am assuming that this is to compensate for the length of the springs but I am unsure. I also noticed that my rebound rod in the one fork was not returning and its stuck in the low position. I am guessing the rebound valve is stuck? Any insight would be appreciated.
Springs are often slightly different lengths so they compensate with the spacers. The rebound needle needs removed, cleaned and greased. It will be covered with black crud.
Thx for the helpful vid Jeff......I'm an mx racer that also rides in the woods on an 05 400 exc ......naturally the forks feel a bit mushy. Can I add more oil to firm them up....like 100 mm down from the top. What would u recommend?
It is whichever rides the best. No "single stock spec" will work for everyone. The spec in the manual is there because there HAS to be a starting point spec for those of us that are not experts in suspension. Amazingly, it is the same spec for every bike made. Learn something from that statement, even tho it is not 100% technically correct. The amount of oil isn't a valving thing, it is directly tied to your spring rate. 100mm to 120mm is 4 inches DOWN to 4 3/4 inches Down. 5 mm Makes a big difference.
I dont think you should encourage people that dont have much experience with the insides of these particular forks to grab the cartridge tube with a pair of special pliers especially when in a later vid in 2015 about replacing fork springs in the same kind of fork you simply tighten buy hand as recommended in the wp manual .Thanks Jeff i stuffed the thread on my fork cartridge with my special pliers due to it being incredibly soft aluminium following your recommendation .I suspect you were doing the same which is why you no longer use this method .amend the vid please to prevent someone else from doing the same .

Great tutorial! Made changing my springs and fork oil for the first time a breeze. Thanks for taking the time to post it.
Thank you very much.
KTM990, in the service manual the process is described not quite correctly, thanks to you, clarity has been made!
You’re welcome

Depends on what year the bike is. '07 -'11 SX are closed chamber.

Wish i has found this vid sooner. I just replaced my seals and added 600ml in each of my open cartridge forks will I have problems ?

Yes, 120mm.
1. outer tube
2.The cap bottoms against the spindle first then the 22mm nut comes up to the cap as a lock nut.
could you tell what is the pipe length of this tool you are using to set oil level?

Does this method work for closed chamber WP's? Thanks for the great videos

What is oil height on KTM EXC300 2015 / 4860 MXMA PA .
+The Dirtbike Rider
120mm
Thank you very helpful video :-)
How do i know what is the required oil level for my KTM 350 EXCF 2012?
The range is 365-385cc for the outer chamber.
excellent video, i hace a 2006 ktm 640 adventure. is this the same process for my fork?
yes
Jeff Slavens wonderful! thank you very much. Am I also 120 mm? Subscribed!
No. That video will be up soon.
is the clicker turned open all the way left before installing or disassembling? i have the same old system and one has no rebound brake, its super fast, but the other suspension super slow
It's ok to have the clicker set to full soft before installing but not necessary. One fast and one slow is not correct. Dive in and fix it.
Hello Jeff, great vid!
Can you plz tell me what is the oil height on a KTM 500 EXC 2013?
Thanks!!
120mm
120mm from the top with the fork collapsed.
Is it 120mm height for any wp fork from this generation?
Hello Jeff, nice video! Do you know the stock oil level for the KTM 950 Super Enduro?

is the same process used for the EXC and the SX forks?
You're welcome.
Pumping does not remove all of the fluid and also leaves all of the sludge. '14 Ws are the same.
So, how much of oil goes in 500-600 ml (mili liters)? Becouse im not sure if i have done it corretly and knowing that woul help me a lot ;)
Hi what size spanner is used for this application?
Thanks

Sorry, I don't have a video on changing oil/rebuilding the fork. Tighten the cap until it bottoms on the spindle.
what about the early dampening type 4054 forks
What should be the oil height for '07 KTM EXC 525 (EU) Racing?
I would like that answer
Hello jeff. What is best, this open chamber or wp xplor 2017? Best regards
There is no best. Just depends how the valving and springs set-up.
Will this method work on a 2011 Ktm 105sx? Also how do you figure out the correct oil level without the tool?
Yes.
Whatever measuring device you can come up with or buy the tool. slavensracing.com/shop/fork-oil-level-gauge-by-bikemaster/
what happens if you put air in the top and it just shoots back out?
Kx125-99 are 120mm right? :P
