How do you tell what length to set your board from your lure to keep your lure from hitting bottom and does that change according to the water depth?

I prefer to adjust my crankbait size/depth running rather than send more line back. The further back you go, the less effect it will have on the depth of the bait because of line drag. There is a couple apps that will give you the dive curve of most popular crankbaits using speed, size, line diameter and line out.
