Don't be afraid to ask your students for their feedback. One of my students just gave me a great suggestion for performing their song in our online class. I have been putting them on the spotlight effect so it just focuses on them but then they are singing to their own face on the screen and not the entire class. Gotta adjust that now!
Do you havE a tutorial on breakout rooms? I used the random assigned breakout rooms in Summer school when my district upgraded to ZOOM Pro. I need help on how to assign students.
Oh my gosh I'm so happy I could help!!! I know how confusing it can be sometimes to follow videos so I'm always focused on creating clear and engaging content. (That's the same way I teach too 💜 ) Are you teaching online or using Zoom for meetings?
You're so welcome lovely! I feel ya on this. It takes time to jump to online teaching and working. Be patient. Find what works for you and just go for it. Day by day. Step by step.
Hello 👋from California. I spent some time in the netherlands a few years back and loved every second of it. Hope to visit again sometime in the future.
Ashlee, you are so clear. I am learning so much from you. I am nervous about being live for 5 hours with teens per day. I will be checking out your Canvas vids. II wish you had been my PD Canvas trainer. 😊
You can do it! Remember that they are just as nervous as you even if they don't show it.Keep it fun, interactive as much as possible, and be kind and patient with them AND yourself. It's a new world for all of us right now. One day at a time. Connect and create community in a space virtual space. Thanks for your kind words and feedback. I'm here with you every week! Reach out if I can be of help via my website or socials.
Thanks so much, you just keep on going, you have been so helpful as I struggle through this totally new platform of teaching visual art to my K-5 students.
I’m overjoyed that I am able to offer some help in this stressful time for all of the amazing teachers out there like yourself! Let me know if you need any specific videos or challenges you are experiencing with online teaching and I’ll add them to my list. I teach music theatre and theatre so I completely understand that those of us in the Arts need to get create for our classroom activities when moving to distance education.
Glad it was helpful! The more you play around with zoom and discover how to use the different features the easier it gets. One step at a time! Plus the great thing is that most all people are using zoom (or google hangouts) so the students will be familiar with how to navigate it.
Thank you so much for this information. I used a different platform in the Spring because the few times I had used Zoom I had some kids messing around. Anyway, I will try Zoom again this Fall semester now that you've made it easier to use. Thank you for sharing ☺️
Thanks for sharing! I completely understand the challenge with students especially those that are younger with online virtual platforms. You can do a couple of things in your settings that might help depending upon your needs. Let me add making a new tutorial for this to my list and I'll show you a couple of tips to try out.
Hi Ashlee Thanks so much for for taking your time to post this video and helping out with the Zoom settings, since it can be overwhelming. You made it look so easy. But I was hopping if you could send me some tips when using Zoom app from a phone. I need to know how to send an invitation the right way. And I have a problem when seeing the participants comment and making myself visible at the same time. I either open the participants to see their hands raising or I close my camera. Can't seem to do both. Would you have an advise for that from my phone please. Thank you in advance😁
Navigating Zoom on the mobile is very restrictive and challenging to navigate. If you can use a computer I highly suggest that versus the app but I know that sometimes that is not an option. You'll have to toggle back and forth for many options. My suggestion would be to keep it simple and have them verbally respond when they have a question rather than in the chat box or raising the hand just to make it easier on you.
Both! When I teach, coach, work online most of the time I use my cell phone as my camera because the quality is much better than my computer camera but I have a new MacBook Pro and if I need to get into a video meeting in a pinch I just use mybuilt in camera. In this video I believe I'm using my laptop camera for all the examples.
Hi Ashlee! great video. I have a question. How can I mark in the calendar a class that is happening 2 times a week. There is a place to mark MW? I am totally new in different areas in zoom. Thanks
That's a great question. I missed this comment so thank you for your patience in my response! Yes, you can set it for a recurring date in zoom when you set up the meeting date/time!
I totally get how students can record a response in a Discussion now! THANKS! Is there a way for students to use the webcam to take a selfie/ video and upload it in an assignment. I love the discussion feature in Canvas, but sometimes only the teacher needs to see their pics/vids.
Yes just make sure you set that up in under the edit mode and how you want them to submit their assignment. It's always an option to upload a file, video, pic etc in discussions.
Hi Ashlee thank you for these helpful videos! Do you know if there is an easy/simple way to create a list of participants that attend a given class session? I’m looking for an easy way to virtually take attendance for my Zoom class sessions.
Are you using Canvas or any type of LMS platform for your class? Canvas has a great attendance section. Otherwise, I haven't discovered another one just yet. for my private studio classes I'm able to track that in my squarespace scheduling.
Thank you so much for you videos. You explain very well every point. In the las 2 videos I have seen some funny globes. They a re cute but they block the view and it is difficult to follow you. I don't know if it is my computer or not. Thanks.
Yes, I put them there on purpose bc they block my student's personal info and also my personal info on some videos when showing you my accounts and behind the scenes. I know they are a bit annoying so I've been using a different method that is less distracting when I'm creating my videos for youtube. Hope that helps and thanks so much for your feedback!
If I ask a question in the middle of my PowerPoint presentation, what is the best way for my students to respond? Can they just call out their answer, or should I open up the Chat feature and have them write in their response? Or is there a better option? Thanks for your advice.
On the top right corner you should see a square icon when you hover over it it should say enter full screen. click that! or if you are on a MAc you can click the expand icon by going to the top left corner of the screen and click the third circle button from the left it looks like two arrows. hope this helps!
You would need to post them to Canvas for the students to go back and view them. You could create a page and insert the link for them to view/download it from your Zoom cloud that way you don't need to upload the entire file each time just the link. Now, you might check see what options are available in ConferZoom in Canvas. I do believe you can save meetings and store them for students to easily access with that program in canvas. I don't use ConferZoom because I've found it a little confusing for students to access and I myself don't like the look of the program but into canvas.
Is it possible to screen share a PowerPoint, and then move it to the left side of the screen, and then have BOTH Participants and Chat on the right side? In other words, can PPT be 50% of the screen, while Participants and Chat are each about 25%? Thanks in advance for your help.
@@VirtualTeachingPro Here's a link which claims to be able to do so, but it may be doable only for Mac, but not PC: th-cam.com/video/KpFEkaq5AWA/w-d-xo.html
You can do it if you get a second monitor, although it is not straight-forward. In Powerpoint (if you are using that to share), you need to go into Slide Show and then click on Set Up Slide Show, and choose the second option, "Browsed by an individual (window)." If you have a second monitor, then you also have to be sure to indicate which monitor you want to use. I set it on Primary Monitor. Before sharing your screen, you can put your cursor on the title bar for the Zoom meeting and slide it to the secondary monitor. Then open your Powerpoint Slide Show and click share screen. You should see the full screen Powerpoint which should open on your primary screen when you click Share. The pictures of your students will then be on your secondary screen and your Powerpoint on your primary screen. I also move the participants lists and chat to the secondary screen before I move the Zoom call screen, so that they stay on the secondary screen. Another possibility, although I haven't tried it, is if you click simultaneously on the Windows Icon (if you are using a PC0 and the right arrow, it will open up two views for you on the same screen. I am not sure whether they would enable you to have the Zoom conference on one and the Powerpoint on the other so that the students can see it. You might test that out.
How do I publish an announcement to all my courses when it applies to all? Sections? Or say I want to put the week’s agenda on the HOMEPAGE by creating it in one course then updating in the other courses?
You can use copy course content to pull announcements but then you have to do a little back end edit to get it to show you as the user to it. Let me add this to my list of videos to create in the future. You can't publish an announcement to all courses at once. Think of every class as a separate course in your dashboard. Each one functions differently on its own.

It would help if your cursor was larger abs easier to spot during the demo, have to run through video sections several times to find it on the screen.
noted! thanks for the feedback I'll see how best I can make those adjustments for you :)

use the chat box! or have them use the raise their hand function in canvas and then you can call out a person to answer verbally.
How did you change the size of the screen at 12:45? Which tab did you use? I really couldn't see it. Thanks.

not that I"m aware of. Once you click share your screen it is auto adjusts. Hopefully they can update that soon though!
