I have not finished listening to this episode, but what really spoke to me was a recent post Shawn had on IG that said, "you can go to the gym, drink your water, and take your vitamins, but if you don't deal with the shit going on in your heart and head you're still going to be unhealthy." This is some real fuel right here. Very grateful for your guidance Shawn. #youretheman

I've been away from the Model Health Show for a while, and have neglected my health during that time. My cognitive abilities and enthusiasm for life declined because of my focus away from my health, and I knew I needed to get back. I'm so glad that this is the first episode I saw on my journey back! Because its reminded of everything I've missed and I had a lot of lightbulbs go off about my health during the time I neglected it. Lightbulbs about why it is that I've been in a mental rut. This episode has given me hope and and a renewed outlook on my life. I didn't know that the brain and your body need different nutritional diets. Like all the trendy diets you hear about everywhere in comparison to a neuro nutrition. It amazes me, how I've never heard about it before today, but I'm so grateful I did at this point in my life. I love how this episode allows you to take away actionable steps, like lifestyle and diet changes that could impact your life. I'm looking forward to experimenting and experiencing the benefits of Ease Magnesium and Organifi; along with, trying for the first time Salmon Roe. Its not something I would ever considered eating, but everytime I think about eating now, I get overjoyed and so excited!! All I can say is...thank you! I really appreciate this show and everything that it strives to do. You're changing lifes!! Thank you for bringing these new insights and ideas to us to better ourselves.

As someone who lives a person afflicted with MS, I’m incredibly thankful for people like Dr. Mosconi for dedicating their life to researching these relationships. Even more thankful for Shawn bringing this information to the masses, I never would have known about Dr. Mosconi or this valuable information.

Fascinating episode. As a physician doing my best to educate patients on the importance healthy lifestyle choices, it’s easier to show people how they can get off the medicines they already are on for tangible diseases like diabetes and hypertension. Managing dementia however is about prevention, a tougher sell. This book just adds more evidence and hopefully encouragement for people to change. I am plant-based and have other reasons to promote this type of diet, I certainly support any diet that promotes fruits, vegetables, healthy infrequent animal products and limits sugars and processed foods. I heard the podcast this am and went out at lunch and already bought the book.’
    Thanks.

Thank you Shawn so much for this interview, and "Thank you !" Dr. Mosconi ! One of my big takeaways from this interview is that Dr. Mosconi has found, in researching alzheimer's disease, that **diet** is the one factor that always stands out as a major factor that impacts the health of the brain -- even accounting for other lifestyle factors. Wow - I feel so empowered by her research !

There have been some shows that I listen, to while tending to other things and then comes along a show like this where pen needs to meet paper!! This was one of those episodes that very much surprised me. OMG- Biggest take away was the fact my brain has bouncers working inside it round the clock... First time ever commenting. Proud NTI Student and dedicated listener leading by example! Keep up the AMAZING work- YOU ROCK!!

After listening on my way in to work, I immediately shared my excitement about this episode with my coworkers. It might not be what they cared to hear at 7:30 in the morning, but they'll get over it (haha)! I was surprised to hear that Alzheimer's disease isn't as genetics-based as it was once believed to be and I look forward to learning more about brain health and disease prevention in relation to what we eat. Thank you for another amazing episode!

Shawn I have to say thanks for having this discussion. I love getting different perspectives from other professionals. As a CPT I value information that I can apply to my clients from your show on topics such as this. For me the takeaway is it always comes down to just getting back to the basics and eating what the body needs (real foods, organic meats, vegetables, nuts, seeds, coconut oil, healthy fats, fish, etc.) to maintain a healthy balance. Keep up the great work.

Another great episode Shawn! I have been listening to your podcast every morning for the past year and I love all the knowledge nuggets you and your guest speakers provide! There were so many great quotes from this episode, especially the fact that we are born with more neurons than there are stars in the milky way!! I think my favorite takeaway from Dr. Lisa is the fact that we should all seek out trying to find the truth. We shouldn't just go along with the various trends that pop up and we should continue to learn from research and the different perspectives from the different professionals. Thank you again for another awesome episode. (and no lie, I think I have already listened to this one a handful of times and will likely listen to it again!!)

Fun fact how the brain doesn’t have any pain receptors so you can’t tell if it hurts or not. Can’t wait for the next time someone says “my brain hurts” lol. Dr. Lisa’s model 👌🏾” really know and embrace yourself” “it’s really important to really understand things ask questions get start about things and make your own decisions” Another great episode!

My biggest takeaway from this episode sounds simple, but is something I often forget - your brain needs certain nutrients from food to keep functioning well! I think we focus so much on the effect of food on the body that we sometimes forget the effect of food on the mind. Second main takeaway that goes along with it is that our brain cells don’t regenerate, and that by adolescence we will already have all of our brain cells. Thank you for the reminder that we need to eat well not only to perform better, or to look better, or to feel better, but also to think and remember better, so that we can stay young longer. Can’t wait to read more in her book!

Shawn, I love your podcast! I am constantly learning and getting healthier with each episode. I recommend your podcast to coworkers and friends. Dr. Mosconi was a great guest for the show! The world needs more information about how nutrition affects the brain. I could not believe how little Alzheimer’s disease has to do with genetics. One of the biggest things that stood out to me in this episode was the information about the blood brain barrier. I have known that our bodies need fat and have been a proponent of a higher fat diet. I had no idea that saturated fat and cholesterol do not pass through the barrier to the brain. The brain having cholesterol that is different than the cholesterol we eat was also new to me. Thank you for consistently providing us with great information backed by science with amazing guests.

Keep spreading the love and knowledge, Shawn. It’s so powerful and truly changing lives - including mine. The biggest take away I received from this podcast is so simple but so impactful. Your brain is made out of food! I have always known how important nutrition is for your body and even your mind but this just really clicked for me. This knowledge will continuing to challenge me to know what is going in my body and mind and to continue to learn. Thanks again guys for yet another great podcast.

This is probably one of my favorite episodes so far . So much mind blowing information. It’s so common to hear “what foods you should eat for brain health” but until you learn about the brain itself you can never figure out for yourself which foods are actually even getting to your brain. One thing that stood out to me was that your brain stops producing fat cells at a very young age. Meanwhile, although i know wild caught salmon is still beneficial for brain health, i thought it was because of the healthy fats that the brain needs to produce fat cells. I will be sharing and listening to this episode a lot !

Shawn, I am super interested in optimizing my brain health and function and I think nutrition is one of the most crucial keys to success in overall wellbeing so I'm really glad you brought in Dr. Lisa Mosconi to discuss this important subject. Sometimes it can feel like there's a divide on this subject between what people are saying they think works which often can be unsubstantiated claims and then actual proven science. I appreciated Dr. Mosconi bringing the perspective of having thoroughly studied brain chemistry and the effects of food on it. For me, the major things I learned were the importance of vitamins like Choline, Selenium, and Tryptophan and how to get more of those in your diet. Thanks for another great episode!

Wow, this episode, like all of your episodes are so informative, a little overwhelming, but always great. I am learning something new everyday and so happy to hear by upgrading our food and eating the right foods we can only improve our health, but also our brain. This episode means a lot to me, as I have a father with dementia, and I myself always feel like I am forgetful, and always fear I will develop Alzheimer's or dementia. This information helps me take control of my own health. Definitely will be requesting this book from the library. I already checked out her website and was so happy to see a few recipes and a few articles that I can share with my mom and others. I have already shared this podcast with my mother and brother. Firstly, I would like to thank Shawn for giving me a huge incentive to listen to this podcast all the way through in one day, because I can be a bit ADD with my podcast player. On any given day, I have podcasts at different stages of completion and on different topics. My biggest takeaway here was that I need to get a lot more serious about my preventative health care. My grandmother is in her 90's and has dementia. I have seen first hand what I want to avoid. My grandmother not knowing who I am is such a sad thing. I find it even sadder that no one in my family seems to think that this is a wake up call to try to educate yourself on what you can do NOW with your lifestyle in an effort to prevent this. I know that I have not been very kind to my body in the past and it will definitely catch up. Thanks for the reminder that we can be empowered to change our condition by changing what we eat and how we live.

Main takeaway, longer version - Wow! There are so many actionable insights and food for thought (pun intended) ;) that is hard to just pick one main takeaway. It is empowering to note that we have so much potential to impact the quality of our lives and health (knowing that genetics plays such a smaller role in Alzheimer that what was previously thought is powerful and opens our eyes to the paramount importance to take control of our diet - you have given me tools to empower my parents and loved ones and I thank you immensely for that). But I cannot stop here. In this episode, there are so many interesting parts! Isn't it beautiful that the brain is giving away the secret of the nutrients that it really needs by showing us what it allows through its "gateways"? The ideal ratio of Omega 6 and Omega 3 also reminded be of the importance of balance. And It hit home to know that "you are as old as your arteries are", will definitely make sure that my brain and my loved ones' brains get the oxygen and blood circulation they need ;) Thank you Shawn for blending actionable information with inspiration, I love the amazing work that you do and you make me fall in love each time I listen to your podcasts with the beautiful universe we have within ourselves. Looking forward to keep discovering new perspectives. Thank YOU for caring and bringing such incredible guests

This is such a great episode and Dr. Lisa Mosconi has provided such a wealth of information! I'm particularly surprised to learn that tryptophan has to compete with other amino acids to get into the brain?! I didn't realise how much this amino acid can and does do for serotonin either... Not to mention I genuinely thought 'milk and honey' was an old wives tale to help you get to sleep, but there's been truth in this all along!

Great episode! I usually find information on the brain a bit confusing, but the questions you asked and her answers made it easy to understand and extremely interesting! I always knew your food would have affects on the brain, but I never really thought about just how much the food you eat affects it. This information was amazing, and definitely going to help me along my health journey! A big takeaway is that our brains are made up entirely of the food we eat and the nutrients we give it, fascinating! It is also good to know that genetics are far less likely to affect your risk of Alzheimers disease, it is more about the food you eat during your life and so much more than just gens. The list of nutrients and food that are critical for brain health is very helpful, I know now what kind of foods to start including in my diet that will help my brain. I'm unsure if I agree on the topic of wheat being good for the brain, just because of all the other information out there (and many episodes of this show) say that wheat is very bad for you, but I am interested to read the book to hear more of her thoughts on why it is good for the brain! Thanks for being such a great source to get information that is understandable and useful!

The brain is such a fascinating structure. It’s crazy how much your diet affects your brain function. I’ve noticed personally that the more I eat “brain” foods the better my congntive function has become. Thanks for another amazing show

Listened to this while in the workflow today.
Discovered your podcast earlier this year and it really changed my perspective on how to view and treat my body. I've been telling everyone about how important magnesium is for body functions since listening LOL #EatThemGreens
Seems like every episode is worth a couple of listens to fully absorb the material. Love the work you're doing and thank you for coming up with awesome content to keep me listening to your podcast weekly.

I didn't realize that serotonin has a strong impact on memory. I am in PA school and am expected to learn and remember A LOT! I will certainly do some more research into what foods are highest in tryptophan and be consuming those foods along with carbs! Thanks for the episode!

Taking the ITN course now, and this is challenging my knowledge even more. The thing about saturated fats does leave me thinking more: there are 3 types of saturated fats (long-chain, medium-chain and short-chained fatty acids). The body can synthesize the third one, doesn’t seem to need or want the first one. I know medium-chained fatty acids can be used for energy but I’m not sure yet how importabt it is compared to other kinds of fats for energy.

Wow. So many good take-aways from this episode! I think the one I'm walking away with most is the study that showed that those who do not consume Omega 3 fatty acids are 70% more likely to suffer from alzheimer's disease than those who do consume Omega 3's on a daily basis.

Great episode on brain health and how to fuel and protect the most important organ. Get your Omega-3s people! Thanks for all the great info, Shawn.

I had no idea the brain is the only organ that can't burn fat for energy although fat is needed for the structure of the brain. I love that daily consumption of Omega-3's was discussed also and how it's the only fat that can get inside your brain and the only fat the brain needs and wants. Time to start buying fish eggs and salmon roe from the fish market to eat a few times a month. Great guest and topic. Thank you.

    Hi Shawn,
Love the guests come over in TMHS , she got me thinking if Lion's mane does really help in Neuro-genesys?
As she said it is so minimal ( the way she said seems like negligible) number of neurons are produces once we reach certain age or number.
Secondly, Milk i stopped almost everyone including my 1yr 2months old boy and 4.5 yrs old daughter, they are on Almond milk only. Do you think I should add some whole milk back into their diet?

It is surprising that all of the cells in our body regenerate except for brain cells. This makes me want to protect these cells and “feed” them more!

It's really interesting that by injecting small amounts of radioactive materials into our bloodstream we can detect gamma rays that are typically not detected through other imaging procedures to help prevent cancer at it's earliest stage.

I LOVE the Model Health Show! I listen on the podcast all the time. The big take away is that eating fat does not help our brain function as an adult. It is the long chain unsaturated fatty acids that are important in Omega 3.

I am a little confused because I follow someone else who is an advocate for MCT to feed the brain and specifically give energy to the brain, specifically in Bulletproof Coffee. Can you clarify?
