July 28, 1974; Umbria Jazz Festival, Todi, Italy Charles Mingus (bass), Dannie Richmond (drums), Don Pullen (piano), George Adams (tenor sax), Hamiet Bluiett (baritone sax)
Back in the day, when you went to a Mingus concert, you best be prepared to hang on to your soul. His music could be dangerous, beautiful, sublime and riotious. He cleansed you of bourgeois culture.
I CAN'T BELIEVE!!!!!!! I was only 17 and I liste only ONE TIME this tune directly from tv when was on air ( sono italiano) ....I remember and I was looking for this tune but I didn't know the title....and now....IT IS HERE!!!!!! I can remember the wonderful theme as I listened yesterday!!!!!! THANKS Stella!!!!!
Hey dolls and guys I was there on the stage may be in Todi (small town near Perugia), the concert was totally free one of the best moment of music for Italy, for my beneration and for me very lucky and very happy to be there
This cooks so hard it's on fire. Everybody is burning Nitro. But that was Mingus--A total genius to put music like this together and always have the best players. Both Don Pullen and George Adams were giants--so incredible yet underrated. God only knows why. And has anyone ever thanked Dannie Richmond for being and giving?? I love George's quote of "Surrey with the Fringe on Top" at 2:01. Way Out West, for sure!!
Off of one of my favorite Mingus recordings, MOVES. To hear this live is beyond is beyond belief. I love all the beautiful comments as well that fellow Mingus fans have left!
a prophet is never recognised in his own land!!charles mingus was a god incarnate on bass, his compositions were always cutting edge, superb and luxurious!he was tormented to death, his compositions tossed into a dumpster in the rain along with the furnishings of his home&sometimes music school for disadvantaged youths!he was an international star mistreated&abused in his own land!ostrasized when he should have been treasured, revered and rewarded for his work with youth to instill music in them!!!
I saw Mingus quite a few times in Montreal, He was my favorite jazz musician - band leader live, and this captures some of the fantastic energy, danger and soul of Mingus live. His records were good, but jazz live is where it's at! He always had consummate musicians who took risks.
Well... sometimes they also took risks to be knived when things derailed or did not meet Mr Charles expectations and plans; especially Mr Don Pullen, whose stretched knuckled solos sir Charles didn't particularly love. Yet my favorite cat possibly.
Just how subjective we all feel about music is quite amazing.... "bad & bizarre" are two words I would never use to describe Pullen & Adams' playing on this. I find this (just as i did back then) a real barn-burner, and a display of passion, energy, and, well, life! To me, the typical format some Jazz lovers demand the music remain within, is the antithesis of what Jazz is all about... "Jazz is Everything... Jazz is the freedom of the sounds" - Sonny Rollins
Hahaha George Adams is such a monster, and huge props to Charles Mingus, as a bass player hes definitly one of my idols. As a sax player... This bari player, Hamiet Bluiett is definitly a wow kinda guy lol ive neverheard a bari do that kind of stuff lol im not sure if I like all of it, but i 100% respect what it takes to do that haha.
Charles Mingus and co. are my all time favorite jazz collective. Davis and Coltrane are amazing, but for me, it does not get better than Mingus. He is the be-all end-all.
nickodemus84 Mingus is the best, i just cant compare anything with her monster works, Let my children hear music, The monstrous genius of his work, on top of the music.
...Mr. George Adams Lives!!!... 4~Ever...Great Music...If there are any other vids from this gig, PLEASE post them!!! ( I found Devil's Blues! )... Cheers & Thanks, Fox
what such great display of musicianship . what do u call the way the keyzi moves his fingers , the way mingus bends to the groove of his sax the intensity of the standing base the steady metronomic groove of the drummer.... MAGIC ??
I can't help thinking the sound's slightly out of sync with the picture - anyone else noticed this or is it just me? That minor gripe aside, this is supremely wonderful - love George Adam's calisthenics as he blows away + the sly 'Surrey with the Fringe on Top' quote he throws in!
Remembering the exhilarating blowing sessions from the Mingus 1970S era. BTW, if you want more of the same, I highly recommend "Changes One" and "Changes Two." On the original vinyl. Drop the needle down, and BRACE YOURSELF!!!
this is not a disgrace to jazz, or music at all! these men are all masters! if you don't like it, listen to something else, because people who watch and study these videos really don't care for your opinion.
If I had to chose 1 word to describe Mingus & his music, it would obviously have to be "genius". Some of his stuff is so intricate. He reminds me of a modern Mozart.
oh, and not forgetting the very very talented but also very very underrated Don Pullen on piano. A brilliant example of the 'inside-outside' approach epitomised by artists such as Andrew Hill, Bobby Hutcherson and of course Mingus himself.
This is amazing. But, I wish someone would sync up the audio and video. It is so distracting, I feel. It seems to me the video is 2 seconds behind the audio? Has anyone fixed this anywhere? In that amazing piano solo, at around 4:15 those slides don't match up I don't think.
With Mingus, a BALLAD does not have to be at a slow tempo. This song is actually a ballad with a somewhat melancholy theme, and if you listen to it as such, it will take on a very powerful meaning. Throw away all your preconceptions of how a ballad is supposed to sound, and open your ears to Mingus' style.
@moretrio You're right about Mingus and stuff. I can't relate to it because it's quite abstract and wild to dance or groove to. Forgive me for my intolerance. It deserves every bit of respect and appreciation as other styles. I guess I'm just more old-fashioned with Jazz.
weird, i heard this version first and can't get into the slow version so much. i like the sense of joyous urgency the high tempo gives it. bluiett and adams take such great solos. pullen too.
If you cant' connect with this track, you got a hole in your soul or head or whatever.Like in photography there are those who are too damn technical and those who were born to imagine and create their art in whatever and whoever and whenever magic they felt like. Thank you Mr.Mingus for letting us young and old true artists feel and hear your heart.
@Prattinator999 - gotta agree on that - he was NOT a dude you wanted to mess with but that just adds to greatness because you hear all that passion and FIRE in his music. He was BAD and he didn't need to wear any costumes or talk any trash to prove it - you just looked at the guy and you KNEW. I saw him in clubs back in the day but was scared to go anywhere near him - little white kid like me - I figured he'd probably pick up that big stool he was sitting on and crack it over my head.. LOL

Pure Genius! I can listen to this over and over and over and it always blows my mind with the endless depths of profundity it contains.

A very stilysh Session ! Pure !
This was one of Mingus's best groups. I was to fortunate to see them perform live. After Mingus left us, there has come no other even close.
Miles Davis said Mingus was the most brilliant MF'ing musician he had ever known.
Charles Mingus and co. are my all time favorite jazz collective. Davis and Coltrane are amazing, but for me, it does not get better than Mingus. He is the be-all end-all.

Shiet, man. I may agree with you.
Rouse-Monk, Lafaro-Evans, Coltrane-Tyner, Mingus-Richmond... duetos infinitos en el jazz.
Mingus in a creative free-fall.

I can't help thinking the sound's slightly out of sync with the picture - anyone else noticed this or is it just me? That minor gripe aside, this is supremely wonderful - love George Adam's calisthenics as he blows away + the sly 'Surrey with the Fringe on Top' quote he throws in!

What a jewel! Thank you so much for this!
the master, the genius!
I like how Mingus just stands there so calmly and chews on his gum like it's no feat at all.
The human spirit is alive and well here
that is some great energy!
woah. he made that sax sound like a screamer trumpet. RESPECT MY MAN, respect
If I had to chose 1 word to describe Mingus & his music, it would obviously have to be "genius". Some of his stuff is so intricate. He reminds me of a modern Mozart.
Still listening to this shit

damn, never heard a baritone sax sound like that before
@moretrio You're right about Mingus and stuff. I can't relate to it because it's quite abstract and wild to dance or groove to. Forgive me for my intolerance. It deserves every bit of respect and appreciation as other styles. I guess I'm just more old-fashioned with Jazz.

my dream is to be like that barisax player, or maybe an eigth of how good he is
Everyone here is amazing, but the pianist is probably the best.
