- In this video, Mike shares how he adds detail to his flintlocks by carving some traditional details around the entry pipe of his Isaac Haines inspired longrifle.
The tools used in this process are simple and appropriate for the time. They include files, scrapers, skew chisels, and V chisels.

Iron Ram Forge is a blacksmith shop run by father and son pair Mike and Ethan Yazel. The duo operates out of their dual story workshop they built together on the family farm. In the basement, they work in the hot shop with metal and glass, on the second story they work with wood to make carvings and furniture as well as fine hand engraving for jewelry and historic accouterments.

This is the proof of the faulting of the YT algorithm... Two years before the video appears in my suggestion list. How can the algorithm prioritice a whole lot of other uniteresting crap, instead of this genuine interesting video? Thumbs up. Well done! No crappy music, just a good explaining why he preferes to do it, the way he do.
Thank you kindly.
One of the best tutorials ever. Thanks
You're very welcome!
Thanks for sharing your talent
More Longrifle Videos! very hard to find people going into detail on this stuff, thanks
Beautiful work
Thank you!
You do great work, I have built four 18th century rifles and didn't even attempt any carving until my third and by my fifth it sure did not come out near to your quality. Curly maple is beautiful, but oh the work needed to make a masterpiece .
Awesome talent
Lovely!
Late to the party but what exquisite work!! Starting in on my second gun and going to embellish it with some carving. This is going to be exciting!
I hope it went well!
Great videos and very helpful!
Glad you like them! Thanks for watching Percy, love your instagram photos.
Such a great work. Truly amazing 😀😀
Thank you! Cheers!
You had mentioned about the original artisans that did the carving on the early guns and where they trained. Many were europeans that were trained by masters and were carving religious panels and statues for the churches. They brought their trade with them to America, in Pennsylvania many were Germans.
Thanks for the reply. Sorry I guess what I meant was a V chisel which I’ve heard them called V-parting tools. Do you know what size in MM and degree your tool is. I’ve heard some builders say Pfiel 16/1 which has a 35 degree works well. This is the method of outlining I plan on doing rather than the stab in method.
I ain’t got the patience for that! I’d have it all screwed up in no time! It looks good though
I built a kibler flintlock kit came out great. But my friend jim at 84 gave me a blank great curly maple he had for 40 years. He said make a flintlock out of this. Iam terrified
Is this Rifle for your self ? If so i understand better your patience , hopfully your videos will bring future clients 😉👏👍🏼
Just for me. Something I've always wanted and figured now was a good time to make it!
What size parting tool are you using to do your outlining?
Hi Josh, I don't use a parting tool, I use a small V chisel and a mallet to outline my carvings
I thought you were talking about playing with yourself. Pipe carving, funny stuff.
Where are you located and do you do relief carving for others?
At this time I do not do carving for others.
Hope you’re making enough money.
Sometimes preserving the culture is enough.
@@TheIronRam Well put. It's for enjoyment as well. It is relaxing. It isn't about money. It is like rock climbing or building a cabin. It is not fun for everyone, but to those who enjoy it, it is the best thing in the world.
