In my former job role as a "boss" I struggled with employees turning up late for work. I got everyone together and told them all if they turn up early the next day there will be a full English breakfast waiting for them. I cooked everyone breakfast the next day and they all turned up early. I did this for years on end and no one was late. It worked for me because not only did they turn up early but usually their lunch breaks were later or sometimes not at all because they were so full.

where it went wrong for jesus is bothering merchants who knew politicians and had connections, i truly think causing a scene that could make people lose money was why they got whole goverment to torture him. Also majority of people demanded a punishment so he wasnt thought of as holy at all. Its the sacrifice for morals and hard work that people look up to

    - participate when you can
    - build a relationship with your troops

Jocko I can't tell you how spot on this is. I tried using this with my new boss who was hostile with me when I arrived at my new job. The first time he mentioned an idea he had to me I thought about it briefly and then told him "I think you're 100% right, I agree". I didn't necessarily agree with him but it was a point that wouldn't matter much so I just gave him the respect he was obviously looking for. I did this 2-3 times over a week with him and the following week we had to sit down and discuss logistics and inventory control, I warned him that if we didn't consolidate our storage space then we'd run into large issues in the future and, to my surprise, he said "I think you're 100% right, I agree with you.
Seems that if we want something, we must give it first.

I worked with a surgeon who would mop floors, push beds, bring charts. With that example set, people wanted to work hard for the guy. Find someone to work for who is a good leader meaning they lead more by example than anything, the difference is tremendous. Or, be that kind of boss yourself!

I worked for public libraries for years. I traveled between branches to get more hours. 1 of the Librarians specifically made sure she scheduled herself on every position at least once a week. This including front desk, check-in, and shelving- stuff you basically NEVER saw managers doing. It was the biggest and busiest branch in the system, and the staff worked together the best. Certainly not a coincidence ... great tips Jocko!

As a fellow SSG, I’ve been a barker, and now I’m definitely more of a lead-by-example leader. People appreciate leaders who walk the walk. And Jocko, you’re right...usually they step up and tell you they’ve got it. You also show them what a future leader looks like. It’s NOT someone who just sits and barks. It’s someone who steps up and gets their hands dirty with the rest of the team. Great content my man!

I had one manager (chain restaurant) who always made time for every employee. Even as a manager, he had timed breaks, and would go back inside to get your check so you could hurry back to your day off. He'd walk the parking lot, picking up garbage customers from the neighboring business left. Morning prep cook no-showed? He'd put on a hair net, apron, and get to work. That's the only person I met that I wanted to work for. I was very disappointed to learn that he was resigning.

About 4:40 to 5:09. This guy is hella insecure. He remembers a specific instance where he felt slighted by Jocko because Jocko offered to help him carry something, that he basically accidentally brings up, and he’s fidgeting through it and not making eye contact, and when Jocko teases him with the “kind of” (as in, “you kind of did look like you needed help”) as if to say, “are you really talking about this?”, the guy retreats into this teenage “whatever bruh” demeanor, pretending like he never cared in the first place, but he still can’t restrain himself from insisting that he’s a “capable individual”. i can't stand Echo's role in the podcast - it seems entirely superficial - like he set it up this way because someone told Jocko a podcast _has_ to have two ppl talking... Not like this!
How it ends up is Jocko with a clear message and an awkward guy who just sits there saying yeh... yeh .. yeh.. (Jocko has a message and an energy for the world. He doesn't need a side-kick for THIS)
I'm just being objective for this (videos like this one) - i have no idea what else he does - I'm sure there's plenty of roles for 'Echo' in Jocko's business'... Why he has him as an awkward part of this.. is beyond me...

Agreed. This podcast would be substantially better if Echo played Devil's advocate the majority of the time rather than just agreeing. I enjoy Jocko's outlook and personality which is why I listen to these clips. However, my experience in leadership roles just does not line up with what he says will be the response. I've done the explain why taking out the trash is important, I've had conversations to see if the team believes taking out the trash is important (they do), but at the end of the day I'm the only one taking out the trash. When I've addressed the issue of, "why am I the only one taking out the trash?" with my team the response is, "We know you'll always work harder than us and go the extra mile for anything that needs to be done so why should we?". Hearing Jocko addressing that would be a lot more insightful than what's happening here where Echo asks a questions and Jocko gives an answer.

I just imagine the hundreds of beta boys who listen to this sophomoric advice because they actually need it. This dude is basic
