Your response to first question is profound. I listened to it several times to drive it home. Specifically, referencing “work drama” as blue on blue. Never thought about it that way, but when your right your right jocko. Echo...this one is worthy of a short clip.

Hi Jocko I love your show and your message. I don't know exactly how to submit questions but maybe this will get to you.
I consider myself to generally be a disciplined person. One example would be if you asked me why I go to the gym I could give you a lengthy answer about goals and health but to simply say "because it's a gym night" should probably be enough.
One of my major down time past times is digital art and video game design. I recently finished a project that took me about 1 month. When engaged in this work I seem to become possessed with a consuming fire. When working I have infinite energy and can stay up late into the night without stimulation and still jump out of bed early if I know it will get me a couple more hours time to work. I find myself overfull with creative power and no job is too tedious or boring to stop me.
I finished and uploaded my latest work last night. And then I looked around my room. My apartment hadn't been properly cleaned for weeks, there was a sink full of dishes and the guy in the mirror really needed a shave and a haircut. I hadn't cut my gym sessions or kickboxing classes but my japanese study (i live in japan) and many other small areas of my life had been comprised because my discipline had caved to desire. I'm already gathering inspiration for my next project. I want to feel the bliss and intense focus that having that fire raging inside me brings but I don't want it to burn up rest of my life. How could I go about tempering it so that it doesn't get out of control and is it possible to weild in such a way that I can apply it to other areas of my life. Sorry this got so long. Thanks and keep up the great work.

thank you for your input sir I appreciate what you're trying to say but i think you misunderstand my question and are maybe reading my metaphors a little too literally. I want to attack my ideas and goals with all the passion I have inside me but I can't let those desires break me out of other disciplined habbits. The little things matter. I'm just looking for balance between being in that place of creative power and still keeping the rest of my life in check. Thanks for your input though and much respect. I hope you're chasing down your own goals with as much passion.

Control what you can control. Yourself. Be prepared for the known and the unknown. Have some plans to maneuver and take advantage of the situation and win.
My personal story: After I got out of the military, I went to work in a civilian organization. I was too simpleminded to think that everyone that I worked with was my ally, not my enemy. But I had no idea how deceitful and backstabbing people can be in a civilian environment. Jocko is both right and wrong about the enemy in combat and in real life. He is right that combat enemy is not always known and you have to prepare yourself for him being deceitful. However, in civilian life, the enemy can be like a double-agent, so to speak, who pretends to be your friend for the longest time only to backstab you at a crucial moment. For military veterans, it's unthinkable that your soldier would turn against you in combat even after years of working and living with him.
For civilians, there is no such code of honor. Veterans need to get out of the mindset that everything is black or white. There are a lot of people who are in the gray area who can be your friend for 10 years but turn into your enemy when your guard is down. Just saying. I think this is why many veterans are bad at financial industry because they are used to think us-versus-them mentality.

For a good Prioritize and Execute method I suggest GTD by Dave Allen. Just Google with keywords "GTD and Outlook" or "GTD and Gmail" or "GTD and iPhone". You'll find lots of setups that you can have on your phone and computer. Personally I use Emacs Org-Mode and Orgzly but they are probably a bit complex for most people. Emacs is more for programmers but anyone can use it.

Jocko...I led a group of 18 people and I had someone like you mentioned, someone who wanted the spotlight all the time, very needy, but the more I helped him and tried to balance the group, the more he disrespected me. So I helped the people who behaved better and gave less attention to him, I want to know how to handle the people who hog attention better so that these type of people don't take attention away from the people who are better team players.

Question- how do I develop fighting skills on my own. I can't afford a fighting gym and my schedule wouldnt allow it. I work weekends and nights 40 hours and I am going to school full time. I train on my own, I make the time but I do things in odd hours, late at night or too early In the morning. I learn from reading and videos but I know a true martial arts class with a coach would be so much better. Any advice? Thank you.

I'm just wondering why Gracie's BJJ in L.A. is soooooo expensive. $398 mo. 3 days a week. As before in there Torrance dojo it was $160mo. 2 days a week. Honolulu hi. you can go to BJJ for $120 mo. and go as many times as you like. The competitive prices in Honolulu are about the same. so why is california so expensive? I thought we were promoting a stronger and more positive AMERICA. your gym if I wasn't so far from me San Diego (Im in Lancaster ca.) I would go daily. Your prices are old school. It shows money isn't everything and you are really trying to promote the art of jujitsu and working out. Aloha and mahalo from us poor guys who are american and support the special warfare community.
