Feel like 40 is more than doable with his offensive skill, he managed to average 37 in the 80s... I'm not sure how people can even doubt he would be able to reach 40 if he was the main scorer for the team.. it didn't matter how physical people would get with him... a player like that in this era? He would have the time of his life, no one would be able to do anything other than watch.

To add to this: today's game is faster, less physical and Jordan was very efficient both in shooting percentage and time.. he did not need 300 dribles to have a shot attempt..

I think Jordan would score about as well as he did in the 80s in todays game if he played 40mpg like he did back then, i say 34-37ppg.
Defense in the '80s is overhyped. Pace and FG% were way higher in the 80s compared to the '10s even in the post-curry era (2016 onwards). Defense was more physical for sure but it definitely wasn't better.
Also Jordan shot more free throws in 87' when he scored 37ppg than Harden did in 2019 when harden dropped 36ppg.

Mark Jackson has the best response to this. People always try and give an exact number when his PPG varied quite a bit. He averaged more the seasons he was losing in the first round. So Jordan averaging however much he wants to make the most sense. I'd imagine if we adjusted Jordan's PPG per season he'd average about 3 more points per game. After about 40 I'd assume he would then focus on getting his teammates their buckets as well.

People have to keep this in context.
MJ's generation for the most part was raised without a 3 pt line, therefore it wasn't taught by coaches to use. The 3-pt line didn't exist in the NBA until the 79-80 season and Jordan was drafted in 84. So he played his entire grade school and college years without it. Look at the national championship game vs Georgetown, there's no 3 pt line.
Even the generation after MJ's mostly weren't taught to have that in their arsenal, which is why you see the superstars of the 2000s shooting mid range shots when they could've just backed up and got a 3.

Mark Jackson with one of the best points about Tom Brady. Jordan would eat this league alive. With the 3 pointer being a big part of the game, Jordan would have practiced 3s like they do now. Jordan rarely practiced 3s back in the day because it just wasn't part of the game, and he only making 1.7 attempts per game with a 33% avg.. Lebron averages 4.5 attempts with a barely better 34.5% average. Kobe has a worst 3pt % than Jordan's.
Jordan today would be hitting the 3 with a 36-38% average easy and would be averaging 40-45 a season. This is just so obvious to see.

People use the absolutely ignorant “players are better now” argument. As if they fail to realize that an old Jordan still averaged 21pts per game in the 2000s. Like the man said in the video, he would do whatever he wanted to do. If he wanted to score 50, the rules favor him being able to do so very easily.

*Jordan put up ridiculous averages relying heavily on two point shots.*
He could prolly get in some more points from free throws and the three point shot.

Shannon’s just preying for that day when somebody says ‘ahhh, he’d average about 18 in today’s game’.

I don’t think he would average 40 in the regular season but in the playoffs and Finals I can see him going God mode and averaging 45 a series, because with the hand checking and with physicality back then he was still averaging 35 to 40 a series

No player is doing that for a entire NBA season. But Wilt did it plenty of times.

I like Shannon in this environment when he isnt playing a character on Undisputed. Just the fact he didnt have to attack Jordan instantly to defend Lebron against Skip allowed him to actually engage in a genuine discussion..

He averaged 37 a game with few threes in 87 or 88 so with today rules 3 more points I’m confident he could do it

He was scoring mid 30's when guys could knock you to the ground for regular fouls. He absolutely could dominate today against any defender. Kawhi Leanord is 1/3 the athlete Jordan was, and he gets to his spots with ease. Jordan would be the best player of this era with no debate at all.
