I grew up in the European branch of KSB, and I, too, can attest to that same teaching of fear and intimidation! Every sermon was the same: you are damned and if you don't confess your sin to a counselor immediately, you will pay for eternity in hell. This kind of upbringing carries so many problems with it even later in life. Only recently did I realise that all the friends I made in KSB were never truly friends because we were afraid to even open up to each other, out of fear we would go to hell. We could only parrot what we were taught. No critical thinking was allowed, not even in the privacy of your own home, with your own parents or with your siblings. I know a lot of young people that were thrown out of their homes, because they did not agree with the church anymore. It was taught from the pulpit we should not associate with anyone who did not believe in the church. It is this fear of loss of family and community that kept me silent for so many years. I pretended to be a christian, just because I did not want to lose my friends and family.
