Dweezil is the real deal. Fantastic guitarist and great guy. His version of Eruption is second only to Ed's original. His Zappa plays Zappa stuff is mind blowing. 🤘😎🤘
I watched the same interview and was intrigued by the same thing. I had no idea it was something as simple as fives and seven groupings. Reminds me of Eric J. Thanks Ben!
I saw Dweezil play in August in Tarrytown, NY. My son and I had 2nd row plus the VIP pass to see a soundcheck and meet the man. He was amazingly gracious and humble, and the show was INSANE! One of the greatest guitarist I've ever seen live! ❤ FZ is still my fav guitarist, maybe along with Alex Lifeson and Mikael Åkerfeldt.
Those licks and how dweezil explained it taught me more in that video than years of lessons. He just makes it so easy and fun to learn. His evh stories were amazing too!
I scoured the internet for tabs to Echidna’s Arf in the late 90’s and in the section Dweezil played in the Beato video, those tabs all had big stretches. Since I have smaller hands, I re-tabbed it and 25 years later, I see that Dweezil and I play it the same way 😂
That dwezzil interview was amazing. I grew up near him and nuno.in boston. But I fell off the dwezzil train, a long time ago. Was great to hear from him again. Really cool to hear/see you give him credit
I did a pre show guitar workshop with dweezil couple of years ago here in Oz. Genuinely funny and nice guy and a hell of a player. His approach to guitar practice was interesting, he envisions the guitar as being in the key of A, and think in two string pairs when dividing up the neck, fretboard.
Thanks Uncle Benny Bob. No lame attempts at humor from me this time.. Just Wow, Young Mr. Zappa is awesome... With all the Terrible weather in Tennessee, Hope you and your family and all the folks in your world; are safe and well
that was an awesome interview. I have a short attention span and I still got through it. The best part for me was when they talked about two hand tapping how Eddie tapped up and Dwezil tapped down. My tapping sucked because I always tapped down to avoid strings. I started tapping up and my tapping took off. Also I love the very Zappa playing riffs with xylophone accents in the beginning. Lol got the reference/homage. really enjoyed the lesson, always look forward for more.
Great stuff Ben. Whenever I play these kind of things I always feel like my hands are somehow "smarter" than my brain if that makes any sense. For those who want to go even deeper into this "Zappa rabithole", Frank mixed this up with odd subdivisions as well. Again Ben, love the channel, love the vids. Cheers!
Great video Ben. I cannot wait to work on this today. Hey, you ever going to do that Way Cool Jr video I asked you about at the Dallas Guitar show back in May 2024? I know your the man to do it right!!!
Man, no kidding. I caught the ATL stop (probably the same day they shot this interview) and if all they did was walk out, play the version of "Inca Roads" Dweezil arranged for this tour and walked off stage, I'd still consider it money well spent.
@tomatopie34 they have Inca Roads down perfectly. It's definitely something. I got to meet DZ and the entire band here in St Petersburg Fl at Jannus Landing, downtown..
@@tomatopie34 I saw ZPZ on the "Plays whatever the f*** he wants" tour, in the same building where Frank originally recorded Weasels Ripped My Flesh (which he played for an encore). All night I was going, "Damn, that guy on bass is good. Whoa, that was some impressive drumming. Hey, that other guitarist is killing it. Oh wow, Scheila is just incredible". There was so much talent in the band, it was mindblowing.
I thought the same thing: You would think that one of the most stereotypical sounds you can get out of playing guitar is just doing minor pentatonic but what Dweezil was showing was basically just how much phrasing radically changes how everything sounds. Also reminded me a lot of how extremely different Guthrie Govan can sound for example with very unique phrasing as well.
I want to clarify this is not to disrespect Shawn. Rather it highlights his talent and ability even more that he could play what he did even with his medical issues. F for one of the greatest to ever do it.
BEN ELLER, Dweezil interview with Rick Beato talks about how EVH holds his guitar pick which is a unique way of holding the guitar pick because Dweezil shows the same lick using two different approaches of how to hold the guitar pick like EVH, You should make a video lesson about this EVH guitar pick holding trick.
Beato is getting better and better at interviews, he lets his guests talk without interrupting all the time. And ben, why dont you let yourself be sponsored by anyone? You deserve it, i dont care about watching 30 seconds of express vpn or war thunder commercials in your videos. Just keep doing what your doing 🤷♂️
Dweezil is great player for sure. I can actually remember seeing his video on MTV as a young teen--My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama. And his EVH stuff is great. He NAILS Eruption. But that stuff you're talking about is noise. If you wanna see people screaming for the exits that's the stuff that will do it. 😂
Killer phrases, UB. That was a rad interview indeed. I saw where someone mentioned getting you on with Rick. If I may opine, You, Senior Wood and Rick would be a veritable Bang Gang of music theory and intervalic wizardry by 3 incredible guitarists. Let's get that going! 🔥🔥🔥 /Edit Good to see you folks are intact after that nasty b**** rolled through.

Hi! Any chance for Mastodon Roots Remain solo lesson? I think its one of the coolest Mastodon solos and i thought whos gonna decipher B Hinds madness better than Uncle Ben. Thanks for making cool videos and wish you a good day!
Okay, so I look at that riff and thought, hay, didn't my biological step-uncle's best friend's former roommate do a video on string skipping pentatonic scales a while back? Sure enough, he did. How about two exercises for the price of one? How about shades of Gary Moore with that roll-over to make it a full on hat trick? Play the 5 note portion exactly as written. E: 13-10, B: 13-10, G:12 For the seven note portion, instead of stretching up a step to grab the high note, go to the string below and grab the back note on the next (higher pitched) string. B: 13-10, E:10, B:10, G:12-10, D:10 Now, if only I could play it a Ben speed.
Hey Benn, I'm curious do you use a thin pick? I saw in the Beato video with Dweezil that he talked about Eddie using thin picks. I've always used medium picks and I feel like it's holding me back.
I thought Eddie used metal picks, as he claimed that holding them in his mouth while fingerpicking or tapping in the studio is what caused his cancer (he believed the metal acted as a conductor for the electromagnetism surrounding him). A metal pick would be brighter on pick scrapes, but also be harder.
@@surfdigby Now that you mention it, I definitely remember hearing from friends long ago that he used a metal pick and that's what caused his cancer, but Dweezil definitely said that is why Van Halen had so many picks on his guitar because he would break them so often.

that Dweezil clip was, imo, Rick's best interview; thx Ben for expanding on it.

Dweezil was great. His comments about having his own EVH doll were priceless.
