@sparx550 went for a ride in Switzerland when I was there for the world champions with Giɓby Hatton ,Mark whitehead, Greg rode with us ,and the next day he was world champion 🏆
He was such a fixture for so many years. Watching Phil and Paul Sherwen do the Tour de France was a July staple when I was a kid in Colorado and later Oregon.
So awesome to see these legendary riders on this track that I had the honor and pleasure to ride in the spring of 1980 when it came to the Michigan State University campus (where Roger Young went to school). The Meingast brothers did very well and the Stetina brothers were there also. So awesome to see Greg LeMond taking to the track racing so quickly and easily. Learning to get onto that track was quite terrifying but then was easily the most fun I’ve ever had on a bicycle.
Love this, but need to point out one thing - Greg, while amazing, was not the first US World Champion of the modern era. The first WC Champ (of the modern era) was Audrey McElmury, 1969 - Brno in the former Czechoslovakia. She was an fantastic rider and a great person. Also surprised that Liggett didn't mention why the Madison is called the Madison - it was also called "the American Race" because it was first run in, you guessed it, Madison Square Garden (NYC) back in the Ancient Era.
Nice to see Greg freely admit that he was initially scared of that track and the racing. No bravado, no boasting, just, yikes, this stuff is scary. No relating to his ascension to the top of the sport, but here,, for sure, I totally relate. I recall lots of times like that with friends on bikes, racing and dueling and daring each other. And it meant a lot to face them and not back down.
I think most of us had no idea this event existed, and Roger Young was just kid then!! (edit) Oh yeah and then Carter boycotted the 80' Olympics. Oh yeah, that's why I didn't vote in 1980.
Are you upset only because U.S. athletes didn’t get the chance to go to Moscow and take part in Olympic Games in a country that had been aggressive invaders, or did you find the idea of the boycott to be an impotent reaction to the invasion? I’ve always been curious about people’s reasons for being so outraged over the boycott.
@@johns3106 I thought and still think sports / Olympics should not be politized or a boycott of the Olympics should not have been used protest, because it wasn't fair to the athletes.
Just a question, what did not voting accomplish in your mind? I mean a President was still elected, the sun still came up ,and the world still functioned.
It will be a long time before America has another cyclist with lemond's talent. I raced track for years and and we used a completely different hand position for the Madison throw, we held partner's hand and threw them forward.
@@robbylong2748 Is it Chris Berman ? A very young Chris Berman? I thought so . Another person commented on David Chauner and Eric Heiden but they were. Introduced a little later in the video. Thanks. I am talking about the guy early in the video with the red blazer . Thx again 👍🚴🏜️ Mike Aisner !
Look at the speed they cycling !!!! Steel frames and forks, Campagnolo and shimano components ! You who think todays carbone shit are faster !? Think again !!!!
That Lemond kid, turned out to be half decent! My cycling God

Great footage ! Love hearing Phil’s voice !
the amount of bike racing that Phil has seen and commented on is really something to behold

This is super cool - thanks for sharing!
Great stuff. Fun times, back then and seeing it again today. THANKS! 😊

I grew up racing on Fred Cappy's 7-11 Velodrome in Colorado Springs. Great to see this.
This is phenomenal to watch! Thank you for sharing 😊
I've ridden that track. It crushes you on every turn. It's much harder than it looks.
I must be old?! I remember this ! Cycling in the snow-but inside ! This was the beginning, and all there was !
This is great coverage. More event than the 'up close and personal' nonsense of today.
The front wheel lift was quite the cheeky move!

Man those were the days
Greg LeMond could do just about anything on a bike. I saw him win all three of his Nevada City Classic wins. The Reno Rocket.
I had the privilege of riding with Les a few times a week for years in San Antonio. Great guy.
If you’ve never ridden a velodrome, it’s amazingly scary. Kids take to it better than adults because they don’t realize what gravity is.
Roger Young works at Los Angeles velodrome
Greg was a beast...
I watched the celestial seasons / red zinger race in San Francisco. Look at his arms and shoulders, Lemond was a stud even at 18!
Awesome
Don't ever recall seeing a Joel Stetina.... Wayne and Dale, but Joel I don't recall.
He wasn't dedicated. 🙂
He was my roommate in trexlertown and rode Madison with me , good rider 😊😊😊

Artie Greenburg 😊😊😊😊 RIP PICKLE😢😢😢
And the UCI just out lawed hand pedaling your bicycle with your stomach on the saddle as cheating!!
Well at least they were wearing tiny balloon helmets in case of fall. 😆
Who is this ESPN broadcaster?
Dave Chauner and Mike Aisner
Chris Berman
