    7:37 Smart move and absolutely necessary to hunt them with that thing...
    All that water acclimatization is just rediculous compared to the unnecessary amount of stress you are putting them through. That can kill them just as much.

    Looks like this tank is on the bottom row of your racks near the floor. Do you find fish tend to be more skittish in low tanks like that? I've noticed certain species in my fishroom tend to not like being low for some reason. I havent figured out if its seeing legs/feet that scare them or if there is something else going on that I'm missing altogether.

      I have not noticed any difference, but maybe the amount of activity outside of the tanks make a difference.

    I thought fish were sensitive to vibration? You would never guess this was the case from the way they were unpacked and then put on the table - especially the last one in the bag on its own. Wouldn't a darkened room be a good idea to un-box these lovely Apisto's in to avoid the stress of the operation? can't say the un-bagging with the slash of a razor blade is very friendly either.

      @TedsFishroom  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Speed is key... The fish have been packed in small bags for 48 hours, and they need to get out of the bags as quickly as possible. A 30 box order takes 6-8 hours to unpack. The stress of rapid handling is preferable to leaving them in the bags of dirty water.

      Ted Judy - That's more understandable under those circumstances but you say at the start of your video that the box was sent to you from a friend who breeds Apisto's and you don't mention it's part of a large shipment. 48 hours in the post!? I thought UK post was bad but it's less than half that time for fragile items.

    Nice biotope, id like to have one some day too. Also, that packaging of the fish was pretty cool. Ive never seen fish shipped like that before.

    Ted, first i'd like to say that I visited this video very often, to recall for guidance and ideas for a great natural setup for Apistos. I'm glad you made it! Second is a question, and being an old video maybe you won't see this or won't remember the answer. about that terra-cota breeding cave with the opening at the top, I like very much the LOOK of that cave! do you know where I could find it? maybe it's avaiable to buy on the internet?

    • @TedsFishroom
      @TedsFishroom  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Lucas... those caves are 'rejects' from a local ceramic artist who could never throw anything away. I talked him into selling me all of them several years ago. They are not available anywhere I know of.

    • @lucas27461
      @lucas27461 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TedsFishroom Thank you so much. I think I will try to find a local ceramic artist to make something custom for me. I usually don't like the looks of most caves I can find commercially available and like the tanks to have a certain style, not that it makes such a difference to the fish, I know... but nice for me!

      If you are going to be in transit for less than 4-5 days, I think that breather bags are the way to go.

    Ted , I noticed you used about one third or half active substrate . Do you find that works as well as using 100% active substrate ?

    • @TedsFishroom
      @TedsFishroom  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am using enough of the 'soil' to help reduce the pH, but it is not my favorite choice for a substrate. I prefer the look of sand, and the fish prefer sand for digging.

    • @damionmarkham9835
      @damionmarkham9835 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ted Judy thanks for the reply . I'm not one to mess with my pH but I'm serious considering a ro system and trying a activated substrate if my budget will allow

    Are apistos similar to african peacocks/haps, where if you're not breeding them you need to have all males only? Or are they more like mbuna where you have to have a higher female to male ratio?

    • @TedsFishroom
      @TedsFishroom  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You do not need to keep only males, and females (when spawning) show that incredible yellow and black color pattern. Male-only tanks also work.

    Do they remain hidden forever or is that just for the first few weeks until they get used to the new environment?

    • @TedsFishroom
      @TedsFishroom  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually just a couple days. Overhead cover and dither fish are important for making apistos comfortable. Floating plants or leaves help, but I did not have any on hand when I set the tank up.

    What is the best fish to start out a fish room with?

    • @TedsFishroom
      @TedsFishroom  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Whatever you want to keep. A fish room is just an accumulation of aquariums, but set up in a way to make them more efficient (and cost effective) to maintain. Some rooms are all one type of fish (like guppies or angelfish). Other room-keepers, like me, keep whatever interests us at the moment.
