  • Apistogramma Macmasteri and Apistogramma Hongsloi are two standards among dwarf Cichlids. In this Fincast, John adds a pair of each to his HUGE Driftwood Aquarium project. The little Apistos are settled in and are right at home among the driftwood and plants. See why John believes in putting small fish in a big tank.

    My dwarf acara (smiling fish) is so personable. My friend who is a pretty big fish person but never really had a cichlid was amazed how my acara Recognizes me and comes over every time I go over to the tankini swim and happy and he interacts with me the way he does, I said the same thing not that I don’t like other bitch but I feel like cichlids are may be a little bit more advanced. I do love the dwarf cichlids they are my top favorite. And to curve the whole aggregation thing I had him in a community tank at first and never really had any issue, but the others already know he is the big fish in town and he rules the tank but not in a mean way. People have this idea that they are mean and you can’t put them with a community but I’ve done great with a variety of them together with a few tetra even a molly. Corys. I love your videos because you are one of few I found that are into the dwarfs more then the African cichlids so thank you. It’s been a big help when considering the ones I choose online to have shipped to my home.

    I agree that cichlids (especially Apistogramma) *are* smarter and interacting with their environment, they are fully aware of their surroundings and constandly observing information. Subscribed

    My favorite "center piece fish" for my nano tank. I have a single Apisto with 6 serpae tetra & a oto cat. They all get along well & Im glad my serpae's aren't fin nippers like advertised.

      What kind of apisto do you have? We have some black fin tetras(5) and 8 neon tetras in 28 gallon tank.

    How do you keep the substrate in these tanks so clean, and with plants in the substrate? Probably hard to vacuum

    • @fincasters
      @fincasters  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I vacuum a little, but not much. I attribute that to having very little plant die off in the tank. And I think that goes back to both the substrate and the dosing regimen with the fertilizers I mentioned in the video

      If you click on the playlist you will find a video where I talked about the new products from Germany it's only about two videos ago. The other place you can find more information is if you Google the product name Denerle on Amazon and it'll come up and you can read about it a little bit it's not widely available but you can order it online. If you find that video you'll see an interview with a man who invented the dosator

    Hello mate,
    I have a couple of Ramirezis for 3 months. Then I also have a male Apistogramma Borelli, do you think I can put other cyclids like apistogramma agassizi or catatuoid together? Would it be better to have different males with my ramirezis partner so they don't breed and get aggressive during mating?

    Hey those snake skins are looking great. I was considering them, and African banded barbs but settled on a school of a dozen 5 banded (Pentazona) because they were easy and matched well with my water. I am a proponent of small fish in a big tank as well. I'm playing with 120 gallons, and I'm considering macmasteri, one of the viejas, or trifaciatas. Probably the former. I didn't know that different species would be different enough to prevent them attacking one another. That's great news. How's it working out? Still no problems? I'm also still looking for another interesting school. I need to find something that won't kill my ramshorn, ammanos, and preferably not eat the crystal red tail Platy fry. They and my Yoyos are the largest fish I have right now.

      It's called Aquasolum. It's been out for about two years now, made by Seachem -- It should be available at better local fish stores, but not big box stores. Otherwise I would search Amazon.

    Hello there! Great video and GREAT APISTOS!
    I was hoping you may have an answer to what may seem to be an obvious question about the Apistogramma, but I have yet to get any definitive answer... So, here you go...
    I have a 55Gal (standard 48" wide)that is currently lightly stocked with only a patient of Apistogramma Cacatuoides (Orange Flash), 1 peacock Gudgeon, and LOTS of open space! Currently, Sandy substrate, some good sized rocks and Malaysian wood covering the middle regions of the tank. What I am wanting to do is introduce 4 females and another male, however I wish to mix the species by having 1Male/2 Female Double Red Cacatuoides, and the fourth fish another Orange Flash female to accompany the existing Orange Flash pair.
    Would these be compatible or would the Orange Flash and Double Red become aggressive towards each other?
    Thanks a bunch!

    • @LudwigVaanArthans
      @LudwigVaanArthans 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They will display territorial aggression so you should break up the open space with different hiding spots or more plant growth. They will also bicker at feeding times so try to feed them in separate corners of the tank
      Best would be to get a bigger tank so they will be able to ignore each other more

    I absolutely Love the Apistos and all other dwarf Cichlids for that matter.. I love that you are in the same city as I am in.. I am getting ready to start keeping fish again.. My wife and I moved into her mother's house after she passed.. There is lots of work that needs to be done on this house, but I can design and build my fish room however I want.. I am torn between starting with Shell Dwellers, Apistos, or Brichardi.. The tank dimensions for each are a bit different so I have to make a choice on which one to start with.. Can you recommend a local shop or the Best place to order fish from ?? That would be incredibly helpful to me.. Love your videos and I am subscribing right now.. I thought I had already subscribed.. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.. These videos on TH-cam make all the difference compared to 20 years ago when there were only books to go by.. Much Respect 2 U brother..

      Thanks SwannyDee Great to hear from you. Did you decide which direction you want to go? I'm starting up a shell dweller tank this month. Can't wait to get my fish. I almost always order from a wholesaler -- so I'm not up to speed on roanoke -- but I've heard good things about Alien Aquatics especially with respect to cichlids. If you want to use the internet -- there are a few choices I could recommend -- Let me know what you are thinking about. A good all around is the Wet Spot www.wetspottropicalfish.com/

    I agree that cichlids are smarter than most schooling fish. I think it has to do with their breeding habits, fish that care for their eggs and fry have to have a greater intelligence than egg scatterers.

    Your substrate is not good for Apistogrammas. They need fine sand, my Apistos use the fine sand as chewing gum all day. Maybe they search for fine food between the sand... And they clean the gill with this sand... Most "black water" rivers have bright fine sand on their ground. sry for poor english...
