Surprised this format is so popular seeing it is harder to round up that many more players to play against and that many more cards to play with. Haven't played magic in years but now it seems this format is hot.
I’ve only played commander, that’s how the game was shown to me and I love it, I’ve played mtg arena and that’s fun too but I much rather prefer commander
Same here. My brother bought a few commander decks and now 5 of our friends got back into mtg after almost 10 years removed from the game. It’s super fun and is always a great time with the buds.
I wish emperor was the format that dominated instead of commander. Only reason they had commander be the winner was to make new commander cards. You.dont need new cards for emperor
I watched this video twice and I still have no idea how to actually play the game. I appreciate your enthusiasm for Commanders, but this was not helpful at all to actually learning the game.
I am considering getting back into magic. I was told Commander is the hottest format right now. I'm sort of a thematic sort of player, and I'm remembering how much I liked the Nezumi from the old Kamigawa set. Mayhaps I will try to build a rat and nezumi ninja themed Commander deck. I recall Marrowsnap being quite good. I had never heard of Commander before, so this video was very informative for me!
Ah great to hear thanks! Commander is super fun and your deck building possibilities is endless! I'm just currently building a Thanos (Marvel) themed deck lol
I recently bought my first pack of magic cards, it was the spirit squadron commander pack and I thought I could make a 60 card deck out of it.. turns out I was wrong but apparently commander is still great for getting into MTG so I guess it’s £35 we’ll spent!
So today about me and my boyfriend the newest Commander deck from The dungeon & dragons series learning this will help me to progress with this deck can't wait to see you how great this is going to be and thanks for the tips that I need to know about the commander decks
I quit playing magic years ago but now I'm back because of werewolves and Godzilla (when I started magic there were barely any werewolves! and I never even heard of commander we all just played standard) so I'm excited to make a tovolar dire overlord deck and Godzilla King of the monsters deck and this is exactly what I needed to get me started
sorry i am a beginner.. you mention using ulamog as a commander who has colourless mana wouldn't that mean that your other 99 cards would have to be colourless?
My roommate plays commander and so I bought the blue green deck with Aesi, Tyrant of Gyre Strait and I was wondering does the skills on Aesi activate while in the commander zone or only once cast?
Noob here. So basically it's like classic but with the following changes: 40 life 100 cards only Singleton Incorporates a commander (legendary creature or some plains walkers) Commander damage Correct?
I had remembered I had some physical cards my cousin gave me, but when I looked through them, I only had 3 legends, and they were all pretty bad. Two flip legends from Kamigawa and one with Njnjutsu, which doesn't work in Commander. Lol.
So what's the general concept you start with 7 cards to start throw down a land and a creature leaving you five cards at the end of your turn do you draw back up to 7 ?
Hey, so you play your lands once a turn if you have them in hand and only draw a card once a turn unless you have a card that says different. You play spells and creatures as long as you have the right mana (land) to play them.
@@NecromancyForKids Totally, I know there was a 2v2 format years ago but that sadly came and went while I wasn't playing and card text no longer really supports that format. MTG will always be more flexible in its formats and is definitely a big strength for it.
I still don't understand how Commander damage work. Only work when Commander deal damage to Commander? Other creature count too? How in MP work? Does 21 damage deal by separate player stack?
Commander damage buddy is when your commander deals damage to another player and nothing else. It will then do Commander damage and damage to life total as long as it gets through.
How meta intensive is commander? Can older decks do well enough? Can you play what u want and still have fun? And... Is it expensive with the 100 cards in the deck? Does it have rotation?
Q1 - Depeds on your playgroup .....Q2 All decks are viable but depends on the agreed power level your table is at. Q3 If it's legal in the format yes. Q4 You can make it as budget as you like.......and fimally no ratation. Hope that helps
How do cards like avatar of woe work? Specifically the (if 10 or more creatures are in a graveyard this creature costs 6 less generic mana) if i use it as a commander
I've been interested in playing again after 20+ years but now that Commander is the most popular format it is really turning me away due to the initial investment and amount of cards it takes to start playing.
They have some great precon commander decks buddy to get into the format. Ranging from $15 to $40 for the whole deck. You can upgrade them over time but they are ready to play straight out of the box.
@@TOTALmtg Thanks for the advice. I went to a local card shop and bought a precon deck everyone was cool and welcoming. People helped me get used to the format and some even went a bit easy on me since they knew I had a Precon deck.
You can play 1 v1 commander , usually then your life totals start at 30 each instead of 40 and i think there is a seperate ban list of cards. But tbh if its with a friend you can play it how you like :)
Correction: you don't have to build your deck around your commander. A few times, I have a 99 cards deck that works and synergizes well, but I don't have a commander in those colors that fits the theme. Sometimes, I just choose a commander that fits the colors of my deck, but doesn't necessarily fit the theme/synergy, because there isn't one, or the one that would fit is too expensive for me. For example, here have been a couple blue/black decks focusing on unblockable or flying/deathtouch creatures for which I used Sygg, River Cutthroat as a commander, even though there are better Commanders for that synergy that I don't own. If I don't have a commander that fits the strategy, I usually pick the lowest mana-cost one that I own that fits the color theme.
98% of the things you said you like about commander can be said fkr standard play as well and the 2% of other things you said you like about commander is you get a commander. Not really a good sell that its "the best way to play"
It's an introduction explaining the game Commander to new players and beginners. I'm not sure you've quite grasped what the video is about or meant to be. Standard is completely different!
Thanks to WOTC for sponsoring this vid! And i appreciate you all for watching todays video! :)

Commander is the format that brought me back into playing Magic and I definitely think it's the best way to play the game
Yeah my friend it amazing , most if not all games are fun which is not the way in other formats for sure lol

Thank you! No other youtuber has explained the 'Command Zone' so I could understand it, you did with ease!
Ah thanks, glad you enjoyed the video!!
I watched this video twice and I still have no idea how to actually play the game. I appreciate your enthusiasm for Commanders, but this was not helpful at all to actually learning the game.
Thanks for this this was very helpful for me and my dad who just started
Ah great to hear thanks, it's a great format too!
Grats on your sponsorship! Now just pressure them to include Commander in Arena!
Thanks mate, and wow that would be epic!
I want this, but the rage quits would annoy the crap out of me
Bro all I know is poker and Yugioh. However everyone just plays Magic these days so this was helpful for a complete newbie.
Glad you found it helpful buddy Commander is great!

I never played Commander back in the day, but I can definitely see the appeal now. Guess I'll have to look into these new boosters...
Yeah certainly worth a look! It really is a fun format.
I played MTG from 1994 to about 2009ish. Just picked up playing again and there are a lot of changes in the last decade.
Ah glad you have come back, it's a lot different indeed even from when i started playing in RTR
Ty for clearing up some confusion that I’ve been having!
The best commander tutorial out there.
Thanks, very much appreciated 👍
Thanks so much for this awesome video mate!
Cheers Space mate for the support!!
Great video! Very helpful. This is a tough game to get into so videos like these are great to see.
Thanks Zach, appreciate that mate!
Standard is the best format :P
😂
You were really good at explaining and guiding through the basic rules and steps
I can’t wait to get playing😁
Thanks buddy i appreciate you saying :)
No problem u r a rlly cool guy considering I’m a high school nerd
Now it makes sense. Dakkon Blackblade UBW. I just need to add 30 cards to hit 100. Thanks sir.
Ah cool sounds good!
I recently bought my first pack of magic cards, it was the spirit squadron commander pack and I thought I could make a 60 card deck out of it.. turns out I was wrong but apparently commander is still great for getting into MTG so I guess it’s £35 we’ll spent!

Ah great they really fun and happy you found the video helpful :)
Honestly, I still prefer standard the best, but commander looks interesting.
Yeah i'd certainly say it's worth trying out.
Thank you for the information.
Glad it was helpful!
Congrats on the sponsor!
Thanks buddy , appreciated :)

Great video! Very helpful, thanks!
Much appreciated buddy :)
Thanks for the easy to follow explanation. I have been curious about the other formats in MTG. I will have to give this one a go.
Ah great to hear buddy :)
Thank you
Co grats matt on the sponsorship. Been awhile man!
Hope your doing well man.
Good stuff !!
Cheers Nox and great to see you in the comments
Thanks this is what I need
I watched the video & didn’t attack you, so now we’re friends!
haha yes we are mate
Fineee I'll buy a box of Commander Legends then.
Yes my friend.....YES!!!
sorry i am a beginner.. you mention using ulamog as a commander who has colourless mana wouldn't that mean that your other 99 cards would have to be colourless?
Hey buddy, yes you're spot on it would :)
@@TOTALmtg wow I never even considered that could be a thing.
My roommate plays commander and so I bought the blue green deck with Aesi, Tyrant of Gyre Strait and I was wondering does the skills on Aesi activate while in the commander zone or only once cast?
Only when on the battlefield my friend
Really is the best format!
Yeah really is mate :)
Great video! I liked the part where you said commander
Hahahaha......Thanks buddy!
Commander and modern is all I play.
Both epic formats mate
Noob here. So basically it's like classic but with the following changes:
40 life
100 cards only

Commander damage
Correct?
Pretty much exactly that 🙂

Ah lol. You could certainly pick up some more, there's lots of great commanders to build around at various budgets
@@TOTALmtg I did find some that might be cool to play in the future, when I can get around to playing physical magic.
So what's the general concept you start with 7 cards to start throw down a land and a creature leaving you five cards at the end of your turn do you draw back up to 7 ?

Really wish Pokémon had a format like this, it might be all I'd play 🤣
hahaha do it lol
Would be pretty hard, since Pokemon relies completely on energy for attacks and not playing cards.
@@NecromancyForKids Totally, I know there was a 2v2 format years ago but that sadly came and went while I wasn't playing and card text no longer really supports that format.
MTG will always be more flexible in its formats and is definitely a big strength for it.
@@ProfessorsResearch Yu-Gi-Oh! also had a multiplayer format which was really busted and that they abandoned pretty quick. Haha.
Please bring commander into arena!!
Hell yeah!!
What if you dont have mtg friends :(

I think as it would work normally, to play a commander out of the command zone for the first time cost the creatures normal mana fee.
You can still play 1v1 woth camander right ?
Yeah certainly, I think there’s a different banned card list and your life totals start at 30 instead of 40.

How many cards do i draw
Opening hand is the same as any format of 7. Then one per turn unless of game states.
intresting
I do think 100 cards in not practical to handle. 60 card EDH
Are you able to play 2 player
You can buddy but it has slightly different rules in that your life total starts at 30 and if played correctly it has a different card ban list too.
