    tiles to big for tubbed addy, tubbed addy drys by dispersion, need to use a cement addy for that size tile. what about wall weight? 20kg on a plastered wall , 30kg on plasterboard etc, gotta watch those weights and addy, otherwise tiles come off, kids in a bath ,door slams danger. should always back skim that size tile too. i have been to jobs where large tilea and tubbed addy used still not gone off behind tile months later, tubbed fine for small tiles.

    Pouse,
    As marcus parks says, you should use powdered adhesive - no professional uses tub rubbish. there are other things which you do or dont do that make me wonder why you think that what you are doing is useful to others? eg setting lines then troweling over them?

      Hi Mike, thanks for watching the video. I have never suggested I am a professional tiler so apologies if you got the wrong end of the stick. As I told Marcus, I have used this adhesive several times on walls that have lasted for years. There are much better quality tub adhesives which are fully waterproof and can be submerged in swimming pool etc and have been tried and tested by the manufacturers. The tub adhesive I used is a low cost adhesive and is shower proof. If the tiling is done correctly with good grouting, using good quality grout (which is very important), then there is no reason why water would ever get behind the tiles in a domestic shower. Cement based adhesive is excellent but many DIYers will find that more difficult to use on a wall as it does take more practice, however, I have demonstrated it's use in my other video. Sorry you felt it was a poor tutorial and I always welcome all feedback to improve my future videos so thanks for commenting. I'm just trying to help people to have a go as one thing worse than a bad job, is not having a go at all in my opinion. Thanks again for watching.

    Labor is too damn expensive for these jobs so people try to DIY various house projects. If the job is done well enough that there’s no leaking, breaking, etc..then he’s got a beautiful new shower and saved thousands of dollars. He’s not claiming to be an expert and it’s not a business he’s running...leave helpful comments or none at all. These know-it-all contractors on home improvement videos always have trash to talk but never help...way too bitter about keeping their practices secret and think us “common people” are idiots who can’t put up wall tile🙄please..We all learn and start somewhere..give me a break.

    When I read comments saying "WTF? Get on with it and do some 'tiling'!!! ".. Why? He's explaining it really well and going through the stages in detail. That's the whole point, its a tutorial on the whole process not just "stick it on the wall and see what happened". - Great video, keep up the good work! (new sub)

    you want some feedback here we go .you used wrong adhesive .tiles did not meet up .they should be level all the way around .shower should have been tanked first to seal it .mepei is a good adhesive but would use a standard set with a heavy tile .always put bottom wall tile on after floor is finished .far better job .no big dirty grout line when finished .just a bit of advice .as for your tiling itself its pretty good

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE

      Hi there, thanks for taking the time to watch my video. Just to reassure you, the tiles do line up, but due to the lens of the camera, it can sometimes 'curve' the image. For example, if you look at the bars on my towel rail, they appear bent at certain angles, when in fact they are perfectly straight. As for tanking the shower, whilst that idea is perfectly feasible, it is also unnecessary for a domestic shower. The shower quadrant already has a plastic (fully waterproof) base which has been well sealed around the edges, then tiled down to. The tiles will only ever receive a 'light spray' as the predominant flow of water is onto the glass and shower tray. If you were doing a wet room, it may be worth while. The tile adhesive is a budget showerproof mapei adhesive. I would always advise people to use the best they can afford, however I have used this before with ceramic tiles, it has excellent grab, excellent adhesion and I have never had a problem with it. The tiles really aren't that heavy, (but do appear heavy) but as you say with heavy tiles I would use the rapid set adhesive I used on the floor (in my other video). Really appreciate your feedback and thanks again for watching.

      Hi Marcus, having used this adhesive several time before, this adhesive is ok if applied correctly and with good grouting to seal the joints. Unfortunately, loose tiles is all too often due to poor tiling and grouting which allows water to seep behind the tiles. Thanks for your comments and thanks for watching my video.

    • @dasmit-wp6bw
      @dasmit-wp6bw 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      the adhesive is not ok if applied correctly! its the wrong adhesive... like saying i had several pints and a few rums and drove home from the pub without a problem.... contact Mapei, same as people saying the have used PVA to seal the walls first before tiling... and never had a problem. Just don't, its wrong... don't forget unless you use epoxy grout water will get.

    Maybe it is something new
    I have looked at a lot of videos and done a little tiling
    Is this a new tile and grout you are using ? I did not think either were water proof
    I think you did a good job of explaining how you tile but the poor quality in behind the tile is bad
    One where is the moisture barrier between the wall board and the tile What keeps water from seeping thru the nail/screw holes on the wall
    At 7.26 of the video there is a huge hole in the wall waht keeps water out of there
    At 21.37 to 21.42 of the video you can see the paper torn away from the wall
    In a shorttime water is going to seep into the wall just above the tub and start rotting
    Second I was always taught that you set wall tile down on your floor tile rather than down below the floor

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, the tile adhesive I'm using is 'showerproof' so fine for light use and showers. However if you watch my other video 'how to tile a bathroom floor' you will see I use a tile cement which requires mixing. This is a better quality cement and is fully water proof. It can also be used on the walls but wasn't necessary in this scenario. If it was a wet room I would have used it on the walls as well. As I'm using a shower tray the majority of the water is collected on the shower tray and the water spray from a shower is directed away from the tiles onto the shower screen when showering. As for moisture barrier, the tiles are waterproof and so is the grout, so if done properly water should never get behind the tiles. The wall behind is plastered with multifinish plaster and the 'paper' you thought you saw in the video is paint. I only painted part of the wall. The whole wall is plastered. So the set up is fine. But I take your point, if it was a commercial shower with high usage, I would use the self mix cement all over and use an appropriate moisture barrier but that is overkill for small domestic light use bathrooms. It's also my bathroom so I'm happy with it. Hope that helps. Thanks for the feedback and thanks for watching.

      Thanks for the response
      After doing some more looking I found that hardibacker no longer needs a membrane or a cover other thna the seams
      I still do not think you can just use a mortor type mix over what looks like sheetrock on the walls , esp where the paper is pulled off of it
      The mortor is only moisture resistent not water proof to my understanding
      Just looks like you have missed doing quality under the tile and mortro not the tile and mortor itself

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi again, the wall is brick, with a layer of cement render, then a layer of plaster. The back wall (behind the shower) is plasterboard that has been plastered and painted. It's perfectly adequate for the use it will get but if you want to be sure use aquaboard or hardibacker behind your tiles, then you'll be worry free! Good luck with it.

      @bodinski100 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      trippleslots mapei ultracolour grout is fully waterproof, as are the ceramic tiles hes using....the plaster render can have a rubber waterproof membrane rollered on, but as pouse says, that is overkil....waterproof tiles, waterproof grout and good silicone sealant keep any water area waterproof....

    Hi bud,,just wondering do I grout the corners or do I put sealant down the corners,,,other than that,great video 👍

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn't use sealant on mine, but....over time the corners do tend to crack. So you can either grout and then regrout when they do, or grout and sealant over the top, or sealant into the gaps but the final method I find hard to remove if your sealant goes mouldly in a few years. So best option is to grout and sealant over it really. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

    hi, i did my own bathroom wall with large tiles, all seems good but i think i used too little adhesive. the finish is flush and level and seems really solid. But i have noticed when i knock on a few their seems to be hollows behind, this must be from where the wall was not as flat as the tile. do i need to drill holes and apply a fix kit or will they be ok?

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there, where the walls are uneven it is ok to have a few hollow sounding areas as long as the tile has bonded well to the wall. Without seeing it, it's hard to comment but if it's all finished now you could just give it a go and see if it holds. Alternatively, you could try to remove the individual tiles that sound hollow and back them with more adhesive and push them back into place. It's up to you really. Hope that helps. Good luck and thanks for watching!

  • @kenw2662
    @kenw2662 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Mostly ok, but a major error would be grouting down to the shower tray. The tray will move in use and the grout will crack. One would deliberately leave a gap to apply silicone between the tile and tray, ensuring a good seal. Please don’t be discouraged by any negative comments, many people will find your video very helpful. Also, many people call a basin a sink.

      watch the video and listen, prior to 26.40 he says, for the grout, then you can add silicon / sealer over the top of it, no you never use grout between bottom of bottom row and top of shower tray at all. Few mistakes a pro tiler will notice, but to anyone wanting to tile somewhere in their own home, this is a decent video.

      No water proofer as I plastered it and used good quality grout. As it's my own house, not too worried, but if in doubt waterproof. Lazer level too expensive. I'm old school I guess!

    • @thebacks9151
      @thebacks9151 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your reply, I did the same years ago in my own house, bought a top brand "waterproof grout". It was OK for some years but over time water penetrated through the grout joints into the wall behind resulting in damp patches in the other rooms. I had to redo the job. The only grout that will stop water penetration is epoxy grout but that's expensive and tricky to apply. I really think it's best to tank behind tiles unless your using epoxy grout or waterproof shower boarding behind. Dampness from showers is the biggest problem in domestic housing.Cheers!

    Just starting my bathroom upgrade and of the many tiling videos I have watched your's is the best, things have moved on a bit in six years to make the job easier with tile levelling kits and laser levels but the details you show are the most important parts that others seem to miss. I shall now watch your other videos.

    good tile set, great eye for detail. In an ideal situation if u would of replaced your backerboard (I think I seen rot in the bottom corner) and applied a little waterproofing to the corners and bottoms you could of greatly decreased the water penetration that will go through your grout. Grout will let water get to the thinset and thinset will allow moisture through cause its never 100% evenly applied, and once water hits your backerboard it will suck all the way up the walls and cause major rot. But I don't want to be too hard on ya cause really it looks great. I hope everything else went perfect for ya.

    Thanks for the vid. Good refresher for me as i haven't tiled in a while and about to do my wetroom.
    I did borrow a laser level and think they're fantastic.
    I spent a bit of money tanking and fully waterproofing the shower area so i dont want to drill holes for a straight edge. Think i will put floor tiles down first then plan the wall tiles so i can do the first level cuts first, get them flat on top and let them go off overnight so i can use them as a straight edge the next day. Make sure i protect the flooring.
    Hreat tips tho. Good vid 👍

      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like you'l be doing a better job than I did. If I did it again I would use a modern waterproofing system, maybe hardibacker board or elements board. Better job in the long run but my shower was only for light use. Best of luck and thank for watching!

    Is it possible to only grout the vertical lines in the wall to get a more seamless finish? I have some slate effect tiles. Or do you need room for expansion? Great videos by the way

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to grout all gaps between tiles especially in a wet area or water will leak through. You could try finding a larger tile to suit your needs. Thanks for watching.

  • @macflod

    Nice job. Do you need to put anything on the wall for water proofing first? How do you dispose of the cement?

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my example it was downstairs, most of the wall was masonry with a screed floor so I didn't water proof. However best practice these days is to use a tile a backer board which can be dot and dabbed or screwed to a stud timber wall, tape and seal the joints with the appropriate product then tile onto that and it'll be a nice job, especially in a first floor bathroom with timber floor. Any surplus tile cement / adhesive can be scraped back into an empty cement bag and go in the building waste skip at your local civic amenity site. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, yes it's a good idea to do that. On a fresh emulsion paint I find it's ok without but always best to PVA. If tiling straight onto fresh plasterboard there is no need for PVA. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

    When measuring the width and height before tiling do you factor in extra measurement for the spacers?

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, so you need to know what size spacers you want. It's a good idea to mark the wall with a pencil first to get an idea. Best of luck!

    i put a wooden plywood as false wall then plastered it... can i tile over it or will it fall off

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there, yes you can tile onto plaster, but you can't plaster direct onto plywood as wood absorbs moisture rapidly from plaster, it will usually crack and come away. If you tile over this then the plaster may come away which would cause the tiles to come away. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

    cause its painted is the tile adhesive strength only as good as the paints bond to the plaster?

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      To a point yes, if the surface below id no good, then it will be the weak spot for the tiles. Ensure the wall is prepped and nice and solid before adding tile adhesive. Even better you can use tile backer board and tile onto that, but this is more work obviously. Best of luck.

    Im just starting to tile out my shower...I dont like the metal strip edge on a corner...It looks like a bodge . I wanted the chap
    doing it ti use rounded edge tiles instead. Also I wanted him to use silicon instead of grout....He said thats all old school, and said not worth the time and trouble..people are not that fussy these days...Well I am...I sent him packing.
    Should i try another tiler, or will they all have that method or DIY it myself to MY standards..Im not a tiler, but I know what I want.

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'm not a tiler either, just DIY but I have also used metal edge strip as seen in the video. You can by round, square, metal or plastic. Of course you can tile it however you want and as the customer you should be able to discuss this with your fitter. Not all tiles will have round edging bits too match so you need to make sure you have the right tiles before starting work. As for sealant, usually you use sealant where tiles join with floor, bath, shower etc and in corners. Hope tgat helps. Best of luck!

    • @superseven220
      @superseven220 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The problem is round edge tiles are quite rare nowadays so you're limiting the range of tiles you can use

    • @steves1460

      Wrong place to be asking here buddy but what I would say to you is that there is a shortage of skilled labour in the UK and that of course pushes the price up. You could probably do an awful lot worse. Ever considered plumbing? Plumbers are always needed and in short supply and cost a bloody fortune.

      Difficult to know as you will get several different quotes if you shop around, but cheap isn't always a good thing!
