    If I had to do it over I would drastically reduce the number of mail drops. Most trail towns have everything you need. Here’s where I’d send my boxes to in hindsight- the Walasi-Yi Center, the NOC, Fontana Dam PO, the ATC, Hanover, NH, Glencliff, NH, Pinkham Notch, Andover, Caratunk, and Shaws Lodging. Good luck.

    Great variety. Send these boxes earlier than planned. The USPS is still very slow due to drastic changes that occurred during last year's upheaval by Post Master general DeJoy.

    • @williambranham6249
      @williambranham6249 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. Most places are very generous with holding your package. I didn't find post offices were convenient because of their operating hours and days closed. I met a fella who was having his mom mail his packages. He said she was always a day or too late on his arrival schedule.
      I never got tired of Ramen. I know it is not nutritious but it is convenient and tasty. I could live on Ramen and tea( until my metabolism rebeled).
      I went through the 100 mile wilderness with 40 Snickers, cheese and bread. No stove.
      Constipation was severe and I was extremely hungry.

    • @lightwalker4558

      Could the slow down be due to the government inspection of all mail? Why else would it take thank you letters 30 days to arrive after Christmas? This is common in all the ones I have sent out.

      @littleceasar9351 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don’t believe everything the left wing media tells you... DeJoy is a great guy, extremely generous, his wife was essentially a refugee, and he has a history of building and running a logistics company in an effective way and was simply trying to implement that with the postal service in order to save the taxpayers money.

  • @nando68two
    @nando68two 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great Boxes and excellent suggestions! And I agree about not sealing them yet to have your support friends modify them as you need items. I've seen people get supply drops that included other items besides food. I've seen maps of upcoming trail sections, fresh socks, replacement shoes and even warmer clothes as you move further North. Just because you'll need cold weather gear to walk on the higher elevation trails of Maine, doesn't mean you should leave Georgia in springtime with them. Send yourself what you need before you need it and send home (or bounce ahead) the gear you won't need again for hundreds of miles because it can always be sent back to you as you get closer to needing it again.
    *HEADS UP*
    There was a massive storm affecting the southeastern states last night. A tornado hit Damascus according to the news. To make matters worse, the advanced forecast is calling for a warm snap ahead. So there are two things to consider, the trails are probably obstructed by blow downs and there will be a lot of sudden snow melt ahead instead of the gradual thaw. Blowdowns and mud are an inconvenience all hikers deal with but overflowing creaks and river tributaries could cause dangerous trail conditions. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE be sure to have updated trail conditions before you leave.
    No one would blame you if you postponed your trip a week or two for trail conditions to stabilize first.

    I like the challenge of shopping in town and trying alternatives to my usual diet. Making do is a welcome challenge in my life. For people with dietary restrictions, a resupply box is a good idea. Getting them where you need them on time has been a challenge to some hikers, and the uncertainty of how much mileage per day sometimes means that you get to the post office when it's closed, or before your package arrives. Good luck on your upcoming hike. I hope that your planning pays off. For this year's planned 500 mile section hike I'm going to wing it. 👍

    Pardon the comment, never been hiking to this extent. My question: for you more experienced peoples: is it typical to carry and create so much plastic waste? The recycleing facilities at the intermittent town might have some similar food but I would seriously doubt that they'd have the capacity to recycle any of this. Especially the mylarized plastics - those go straight to refuse. I always think of hiking and orienteering as experiences to commune in nature and such plastic waste seems to be the anthesis of it. Perhaps if I ever attempt something of this magnitude (long walking trip) i can try to do in a different way. My apologies, it just seems so odd to me.

      Something like Dr. Bronners(Castile soap) is adequate. You don't need both.
      Lesson learned: do not handle food with your hands. Handle with a utensil.
      Second do not put your hand in a bag of food that belongs to someone else: G.o.r.p. comes to mind.
      Every year clusters of hikers who have grouped up at shelters or hostels become sick with Norovirus type symptoms. With the pandemic staring us in the face, surely we have learned how to protect ourselves. A little observation of your fella hikers will show you that many hikers don't understand or don't respect the principles of sanitation.

      Things are often bartered or if you are generous unwanted items are left at hostels for other hikers. I was always looking for something to eat so there was never unwanted food in my pack. I arrived at the church hostel at Delaware water gap and immediately went scavenging. I grabbed the first thing in the hiker box, but did not read the label.
      It was liver flavored(yuk) "Beggin Strips" for dogs.
