They took a gamble when they made this movie in the early 80s (which bombed at the time), trying to re-invent the big budget musicals of the 1940s and 50s for a modern era. Though the production is often messy and too busy, there's something original and unique about Xanadu, I like the energy of it and the music and dance is quite wonderful.

That may be one of the best analyses I've ever read regarding Xanadu. I had simply assumed a ton of cocaine had been the creative driver.

It hurts the film that Beck can’t sing or dance. That gets left up to Kelly who is the odd man out in the relationship. Too often Kelly is reacting to what Beck and ONJ are doing and feels a bit odd with him hanging around when this young couple are trying to make out.
ONJ is so beautiful and spell-binding it hurts. But Beck has zero chemistry with her and the script does them no favors.
If there’s ever a remake they need to get a lead actor who can do everything and pare down the leads to just Kira and whatever Beck’s character was.

Absolutely adore this film. One of the last sincere love letters to the kind of unironic, unselfconscious happiness which only exists in film. Gene Kelley dances perfectly as if he is still in his 20's and ONJ is just *so* astonishingly beautiful and talented it almost leaves one breathless. The closest we've ever seen to an actual human angel.
The fantasy lasted another 10 years before counterculture cynicism finally took over and became the mainstream... but nevertheless what a wonderful ride it was.
Perhaps after covid, we will all have become exhausted with the Beavis & Butt-Headification of pop culture and create another plateau of glorious escapism? Perhaps this time it will be in VR... Xanadu in the metaverse?

A truly bizarre film that fascinated me as a 7 year old. Xanadu occupies this awkward post-disco, pre-MTV space where it was trying to be futuristic but ultimately just looks how the 70s thought the 80s were going to look. I still love the music though.

Admittedly, the movie is a bit cheesy - BUT... Gene Kelley on roller skates. Come on. Deco costumes and backdrops. Some "high-end" visual effects (for back in the day). Then you have Jeff Lynne's Electric Light Orchestra and Olivia Newton John.
And the soundtrack. Oh, the soundtrack!
"London, Hamburg, Paris, Rome..." Four of my favorite cities, and the flashback to the '80s.
And, this song just seems to put a smile on everyone's face. My second grade students were sick of "online learning" yesterday, so I told them to all stand up. I showed a TH-cam video montage of "flash mob" dancing to this song. They made me play it twice more. They started making up their own dance moves.
Side note, even a few parents were getting into it. Oh, the power of a "feel-good" song!

This is one of my guilty pleasure movies. The acting is subpar. The dialog is hokey, at times. BUT (and a HUGE 'but'), the music is wonderful. I loved the choreography (especially in the finale with the song, 'Xanadu'). Olivia Newton-John is two notches above 'beautiful'. Often times, I will turn this movie on and just skip to the musical numbers. They are, by a long shot, the best part of this movie.

Based on the dates of the movies, I believe the Warriors beat up on all the other NYC gangs at least a year before Xanadu happened. The last we saw of that outfit from Coney, they were walking along the beach, as Mercy tells Swan she likes traveling too. Looks like they made it to LA, where Mercy may have gone her own way because she wanted some real action. Meanwhile, Swan picked his California name to be Sonny. It worked out pretty well for all!

This scene makes the roller disco climax make way more sense--the zoot suits, for example.
Kelly was in one of the all-time greatest pieces of movie musical silliness--The Young Girls of Rochefort--and it's possible Xanadu wanted to capture some of that cotton candy vibe. It's not far from this to Chazelle's La La Land. I just wish the director knew how to compose and frame the shots. There must have been a treasure trove of unused footage that would have been something to see.

I don't think it's cheesy enough! Add more wipes, at color effects to them to make them really stand out. And while your at it, to make sure the audience only focuses on the wipes, give each one a wacky sound effect."

Don't make it a love story, make it a redemption, a fulfillment arc. They are friends, and they help each other to realize their dreams. Kira is a muse, she does not need a boyfriend to be happy.

This is a bad movie but often in fascinating ways. These sequences are filmed SO bizarrely, the aesthetic is soooo tacky even by 80s standards. It’s all really clashing and messy. I mean this is one of the worst musical sequences I’ve ever seen on film and it’s too bad cause it’s a solid ELO song. The direction often is just MORE DANCERS MORE BRIGHT COLORS
