Struggling artist Sonny Malone (Michael Beck) is trapped in a dull job painting album covers. He is instantly attracted to Kira (Olivia Newton-John), an anonymous woman randomly photographed in the background of one of his assignments, but no one is able to identify her. When you were an 11 year old girl in the 80s, watching this scene and thought it was the most romantic song ever *dreamy sigh*
I was 11ish in the late 90s first time seeing this movie and still thinking it was the most romantic song 🤭😁
I was 9 and yes, absolutely
Was born 74 i watched this beautiful movie all my life now 47 and it and my soul have not aged a day xoxo ❤
@@paulgillespie9855 same here Paul. Same age
@@TheRealMrSnickers then that makes you a total legend!!!!
Fun Fact: Don Bluth animated most of this sequence himself so that the rest of his team could keep focusing their efforts on The Secret of NIMH back in the day. The money made from taking this short project kept their tiny studio afloat for several more weeks!
Worth it! SoN is one of the greatest animated adventures in the world.
I KNEW it!! I was telling my daughter that she has the same look and feel (and even the same movements) as Thumbalina!
Rest in Peace Olivia, you will forever be in our hearts .... don't walk away, don't say goodbye, don't let it die 💕
Yes C.F.N Ciao For Now Olivia.
So sad she died
My Grandpa used to listen to this soundtrack all the time when he was downstairs doing some work in their basement when I was a kid. For some reason, this was the song I remember hearing the most. Grandpa's gone now, but listening to this song helps me keep his memory alive.
How cool
I love Don Bluth animation, it hits me right in the nostalgia and I’m crying cause this is so beautiful watching this for the first time and ELC is one of my fave bands😭
Don Bluth's animation is truly magical, I wish it was still around today.
Bluth!
Oh Don Bluth animated it? That explains the dreaminess of the scene
Don Bluth's maternal grandfather was Rey Pratt from the Pratt family, whose own father Helaman Pratt was an early leader in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as a grandfather of George W. Romney and great-grandfather of Mitt Romney
It's a crime the way the production wouldn't credit Don Bluth Animation for this sequence.
I can’t believe she’s gone 😔 RIP beautiful woman
She is now resting in Xanadu 💫🤍🤍🤍
As a seven year old, I went to see this with my mother. I loved this soundtrack so much and I was dancing in the aisle as the songs played. My mother never chastised me and just let me be. 💓
Still in love with this movie. My daddy an I used to watch this when I was a kid. Love you daddy❤️❤️RIP
He says he loves you too!
Fun Fact: This particular sequence, was animated by cartooning legend, Don Bluth.
Thanks, this dose look like Don's style.
Who also directed An American Tail for Universal.
@@King_Colombia_Inc The very same.
It has bluth written all over it
This is the most Don Bluth thing I’ve ever seen, and I watched Anastasia.
*Love this scene!!!...ELO 's Musical Score is the wings that makes this movie Fly*
Ah... Jeff Lynne. This movie would not be what it is today without you.
Probably the best scene, the Don Bluth animation is fantastic! Xanadu is lowkey an old Disney movie lol. I think the plot was actually great but maybe lacked in its execution, the struggling artist feeling blocked and uninspired and then finding inspiration (and love) from an actual Greek muse is a cool idea, i think it's the fact that he ended up being inspired to build a roller skating Disco where they lost some of the audience lol, but i still think it's a gorgeous movie and i will forever love it, mostly because of Olivia (RIP), Gene Kelly (RIP), and of course that masterpiece of a soundtrack 💖
This movie was magical and this scene the most beautiful! Major props to Don Bluth!
Don Bluth did a great animated scene.
The animated bird legwarmer community is still shook
You can see how this short segment served as a blueprint, or draft or whatever, for "Thumbelina." The animation is gorgeous in both.
Definitely
Yeah. They do look like Thumbellina and Cornelius. I never thought of that. Maybe it is just being a handsome brunette guy, but Sonny does look a lot like Dimitri too. Anastaisia is one of my favorite Don Blyth movies.
@@c.d.dailey8013 I love how Bluth's characters have adorable and similar style choices. She has the hairstyle of Anastasia and a little like Cadet Kimberley from Space Ace. The sheer glittery parts of Kira's outfit are also like Anya in the Once Upon a December and Princess Daphne from Dragon's Lair.
A lot of memories in my mind and many feelings in my heart! This time was the best for me!
I hear that!
This is my favorite scene in the movie.
Mine too.
R.I.P. Olivia Newton John. :'(
I've loved this film since I was a kid and I still love this film to this day.
This part has to be one of my favourite parts of the film
The whole film really is magic, and Oliva was the perfect choice to be a muse
This movie was pure magical fantasy & fun when I watched it in the 1980s!r.i.p Olivia you really made me dream big listening to your music !🎶🎬
You melted my heart as a young child! Reminded me to always be humble & kind. Thank you Olivia 💜 my ma has a dinner plate for you up there
This looks amazing. I wish I could turn into a cartoon character.
Me too.
God, I miss Don Bluth's 2D animation.
He still has his beauty and beast artwork of some deleted projects he couldnt finish
@@jasminkrieger8464 I wish he was able to finish them all. It would've been nice to see his version of Beauty and the Beast.
@@dreamguardian8320 he had even more projects who never seen the light of day
@@dreamguardian8320 hmm but a other disney ex Artist he drawn gaston make his own movie mushka the Tiger its in TH-cam in trailer
@@jasminkrieger8464 What a bummer.
Queen + Abba + doo-wop = ELO (sheer brilliance)
that's right. That's what it is...
This is absolutely beautiful! It stinks and it’s honestly so sad how animation now couldn’t stay this way… Honestly though… what happened to REAL animation like this? The modern 2D digital cartoons now will NEVER beat this stuff! This stuff is beautiful, and It was so much better back then!
Don Bluth is a legend!
UPDATE: R.I.P. Olivia… 😔
RIP Olivia Newton John!!!
RIP Olivia!!🥲🙏🏼
Just beautiful, thanks for uploading this here, unforgettable!
Omg this was a constant back in Cuba every Valentine's.
Rest In Peace (Sandy) Olivia Newton John 1948-2022
my favorite part of the movie. when don bluth does the animation, (exept for a troll in centreal park) you're gonna get something good. this is the best animated sequence in a live action movie.
at least the weakest films like Rock n doodle and Troll deliver solidly great animation, though the latter is apparently superior for its cute stupidity, makes sense?
I wasn’t born until 1999. My dad introduced this movie to me when I was probably a lot younger than 10 years old.
I listen to the xanadu album every other day and it fills me with so much happiness. Olivia Newton John was my idol as a little girl And still to this day her movies fill me with so much joy
RIP Olivia ❤
I see master animator Don Bluth is still with us. Hope he can get some joy out of all these nice comments.
I was 6 in 1980 but this scene is very well remembered coz it really mesmerized me as a kid.
Beautiful animation, beautiful song, beautiful movie ❤
This makes me all the more sad O.N.J passed away to die. R.I.P . Not just a national treasure a World Treasure really.
The movie was cringy at some aspect but the soundtrack itself, the cast dancing, and clips like this are all impeccable. RIP ONJ😢
It's only cringy to you because you can't accept being a romantic
Ugh! It's been 20 years since I saw it all the way through and I don't remember this...Now I have to watch it again. Oh wait! I loved this movie. Thanks!
Why is this movie so stack with talent Olivia Newton, elo and this sequence was done by Don bluth
Why couldn’t this movie be an animated movie?
It would be cool if it was an live action and animated adventure movie.
@@gionnijohnson69 Like Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Merry Poppins, the Pagemaster, and Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
I don't know, but it sure would've been nice to see another Don Bluth movie again.
Speaking of Don Bluth if it was a whole animation, suddenly would've match this too right?
Beautiful... this is so lost today.
That was a cute animation.
Agreed.
R.I.P. Olivia Newton John
thank you Don Bluth for giving this to us.
Thank goodness they didn't get Ralph Bakshi for this.
Agreed.
This was the greatest underrated movie ever
I seriously love this!
Rest In Peace Olivia
I will miss U forever! Don't walk away!!!
0:07 Swan looked good as a cartoon character!!!! I wanna see Ajax and Cleon animated, too!!!!
And it helps that he’s even got the vest
RIP, ONJ. So sad that you had to "walk away" sooner than expected.
If this was an animated film Dom Bluth would direct it
It *was* Bluth.
This is such a beautiful and romantic scene ! RiP Olivia !
Super happy Don Bluth's Somewhere Out There book mentions this animation, I would've never known about it
just came across this and wow it’s so cute and romantic! 🥺
One of my favorites from the movie ❤
Que hermosura, adoro este video y cancion desde muy pequeña. Gracias infinitas por compartirlo 😊❤🤗🥰🌹
Omg this is magic 😍
Love this corny movie so magical great summer film
This scene was so romantic that I have never forgot it ,I was like 7 years old when I saw this scene 🥰
It is so romantic and lovely to see true love ❤️
I love this movie
I love Don Bluth films, even though I was born in 2000. I loved The Pebble and the Penguin, and All dogs go to heaven.
This brings tears to my eyes immediately. Xoxoxox❤❤❤❤
This movie was insane, and everyone should go watch it
Growin up as a young kid in the 80's I always thought I was Olivia in Xanadu, she was my O'l time fave. R.I.P our Beautiful ONJ!!⚘💜
I love this movie!
"A lonely room, where empty days, are gathering / to meet me..."
We will miss you and love you always. Heaven has its most beautiful angel singing now.

Best part of the movie. ❤
i’ve been loooking for this movie for years, then i heard a song with Xanadu in it… finally clicked.
Love that song so beautiful the fairy 🧚🏿♀️ tale love 💕
Beautiful. God blessed the love of a man and a woman!
RIP dear Olivia Newton John - you have been taken from us - my heart is shattered. Sing with the Angels Livvy.
Don Bluth and electric light orchestra combining into one centerpiece
Fun fact: you don’t have to be high to think you’re high watching this movie.
❤ this song elo don't walk away from Xanadu
Olivia Newton-John should have been in more films. I heard that because Xanadu underperformed she was given less roles. She had an amazing smile and voice.
Lol sonny looked so goofy as the fish
Don Bluth, you are a genius.😀
Veeshoe. Your right. I was 10. Best song, best show. Great times. The 80s the best. I hear you. Nothing touches these songs ... Elo..best band.
Muito bela esta animação olivia um show lindo...
The Kelly Groucutt era. Brilliant!
My childhood
Great animation by Mr. Don Bluth
This was the best scene in the movie.
Probably the best part
One of the first clips of animation ever created.
Totally forgot about this scene, mom would sometimes have this movie on when she was cooking when I was little and I only have vague memories of it.
So love this part so cute lol xoxo
IN MEMORY OF OLIVIA NEWTON JOHN
Don Bluth did this sequence, and he's done other movies, like The Secret of NIMH, The Pebble and The Penguin, Anastasia, and more.
Don't forget Thumbelina, An American Tail, The Land Before Time and All Dogs Go to Heaven.
Lol I like the fart sound when sonny turned into a bird xd
Great Animation from Don Bluth Productions, and Music by Electric Light Orchestra.
That combination brings tears to your eyes
@@sralyn It's a Great Combo, and That Segment in Xanadu lead to The Secret Of N*I*M*H.
Indeed. Looks very much like Dragon's Lair.
All of Don’s characters pretty much looked like Dirk and Daphne, the couples anyways. XD
