Perry miniatures are so nice. I remember getting my first ones (medieval European mercenaries) and being blown away by how nice and crisp all the details were.
It can seem like you're taking longer to apply it while being neat, but it saves time overall to slow down a little and try to avoid any clean-up with it later.
They look good! I am surprised that the Contrast Paint worked this well on the figures. The Perry Miniatures sculpting is really nice. Thanks for sharing this great tutorial.
I was pretty surprised myself, honestly! Since then, someone suggested that you might try the Germans from a pure white primer and get a lighter result, giving a more sunbleached, veteran appearance for your later desert campaign troops. One more to give a shot, I think. :)
You should! They're another tool in the box. :) Just like regular paint they can take a little getting used to, but once you're happy with the results, you're on to a winner.
I'd definitely suggest giving it a shot on one fella first, to see how you like the look of it. That being said, I've noticed a fair few people in the Bolt Action Facebook group using Contrast for their DAK and it seems to work rather well on those slightly chunkier Warlord sculpts.
Great as usual! I'm gonna give contrast painting a go. Those would definitely look great on the table. I can see how you would have to be kinda selective in the project you pick for this. I love your videos!!!!
It definitely suits some things more than others, but most historical miniatures are loaded with details that work pretty well with the material. As long as you're happy with the end result, though, better painted than unpainted I reckon!
It's amazing!!! Such a good game. And you get 30 guys in a box with the option to build heavy weapons teams, snipers and commanders. You can have a perfectly good game with just a £22 pound box on each side.
The Perry Miniatures boxes are a slightly smaller, more 'slender' scale than the Warlord Games and similar plastic stuff - a lot of people tend to refer to it as True Scale 28mm - but I'll admit I like the slightly chunkier style of Warlord's sculpts overall. That being said, Perry's boxes come with an MMG and mortar ordinarily, where you do have to pick those up separate from Warlord's metal ranges. Still, a playable platoon for the cost of a box of Intercessors...!
Honestly, for the cost involved I'd probably stick to a coloured primer and a quick drybrush over textured stone and brick. They're very good at what they do, but for the amount you'd need to work with on terrain I think it'd be better to avoid them for cheaper methods instead!
Hey Sonic, will there be an update on your 8th army tutorials? I’m still debating between this tutorial, and the one from even further back. Love all your video’s! Cheers
Excellent video as usual! I did my Soviets with Contrast and was able to crank out 15 in a day's worth of painting! Do they look good? They do to me, and that's all that matters.
They definitely look better than bare plastic with one or two finished models. It's all about the effect the army gives on the table, and in that respect I think as far as 'done is better than not,' these are definitely a pretty useful tool.
OMG! 3 videos in two days!!!!! Christmas came early! 😁. Thank you! Quick question: what “army” brand would you recommend for someone who just wants to dip his toes into WW2 miniatures? I’m more about just painting them and setting up a scene than playing a war game. Your opinion would be valued. Thank you again! 😁👍
If you're looking for a handful of miniatures to have some fun with and have a go at painting, I wouldn't go past Warlord Games' boxed sets of plastic infantry, especially more recent releases. There's tons of options, you can customize your kits and the detail on them is really good. I'd look at the American infantry box as a place to start!
Lovely job. And what fortuitous timing as I am just about to paint a DAK platoon. As to the DAK goggles, did they use fabric covers on them? If so, just leave them as they are, they honestly look just fine as is.
Good question! I don't know about dust covers like that, but at this stage it seems easier to just shrug it off and leave them as they are. Certainly saves a step. ;D
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio would a citadel drybrush be ok for the drybrush part? I've got the large citadel drybrush. Would it be OK for that instead of a male up brush?
Would it be possible to make your video transitions less bright/white? Watching on mobile late at night they're pretty harsh. But great video as always otherwise!
Now that's a thought! I honestly hadn't considered how that would look in conditions other than straight on the monitor. I'll see what I can do for future videos. :)
Greg White that seems to be a common complaint in the amazon comments as well. I'm also curious which ones he is using. I don't think my wife would appreciate me using her expensive makeup brushes, even though she likes my brush cleaner ;)
I'm just using water at the moment, but cold from the tap rather than anything warm so I don't unseat the bristles. They might fall apart before long, but I got a relatively large set on the cheap and it wouldn't bother me to replace them every few months at the right price.
These guys are a fair bit smaller than Citadel's humans. Warlord Games do infantry that are fairly close in scale to something like the more recent Genestealer Cult miniatures, but Perry Miniatures' stuff is a fraction smaller than that again. Most call it 'true scale' 28mm, and that seems about right. They're quite close to LOTR models, if that helps!
they are fantastic, i have been looking for this srt of tutoriol for quite some time. do you reckon this metho will work ok on the Warlord Games DAK/8th army ?
Yup! This ought to work on just about anything, honestly. Metal miniatures don't give quite the same finish, but it's hardly noticeable at table distance. Anything plastic will be fine.
Happy to see your content popping up in my feed again!
Hope to see more of it the coming months!

Rapidly becoming my favorite ‘go to’ channel for all things painty...
This is probably the cleanest application of Contrast I've seen.

Very nice, love to see you painting ww2 minies. I should probable give the contrast a chance.
Ok, you convinced me to get some contrast paints. Those look nice!

Excellent, just excellent!
Will be trying this on my next DAK squad. Thanks for the information!

I believe the piping on the German's sleeve would have been a regiment banner
Two videos in such little time? Amazing! Your tutorials make me want to try Bolt Action :D

HEY MAN, LOOKS GOOD
Welcome back bud
I did this exact scheme and I needed validation, and this pops up
Nice
Would love to see how these paints work on resin fences and resin stone/ brick walls....
As long as there are recesses they'll look good. Flat surface areas though are a weakness.

Can you do a video on painting us airborne with contrasts?
Very nice

lol. autocaptioning on the video comes up as “aggressive earth shade”. Damn straight.

I love the look but I can't make out what the names of the colours are, can you post a list or email to me please?
Glad to see that your back .
Any chance youd do some ww2 camo stuff ? Like ss pea dot or something like that .
Would Tyrant Skull work ok for the drybrush part?
It should do. It won't be quite as bright, but it'll work perfectly well. Tyrant Skull or even Terminatus Stone would work instead.
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio thanks :) I've got tyrant skull so will give that a go on one model and see how it goes

Would you paint the Australians the same Thanks Wally
Yep! Same uniforms across almost all the 8th Army.
Thanks any info on painting the Italian Bersaglieri infantry in the desert. Thanks again. Wally
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio hello I just ordered the ww2 Italians for the desert conflict what color would you recommend for the uniform and prime
awesome, how about some chindit ou British/commonwealth/indian army in SEAC ?
How are you cleaning your make up brushes? I've had mine fall apart ( the glue disintegrating ) after cleaning.

What primer did you use?
Wraithbone for these guys. The tiny bit of warmth it has in it instead of pure white makes a big difference.
