In regard to bulbs, if you want 50v, you can wire 24v or 12v bulbs in series (2 or 4 on same circuit - I dont think a 2 volts will make much difference). One downside is one bulb fails, they all go out - like the old christmas tree lights), but the upside is you can find bulbs that are readily and more easily obtainable. I know several chaps with the model showmans engines who have done this where they have 110v dynamos, so they can use smaller (and more to scale) 12v light bulbs.

I belive the railway uses Lister trucks, or they did around here. Councils used a few Bonsers for there town workers. Gardners etc...
