*The U2 song I was thinking of was NUMB from Zooropa, not The Fly (which was still a strange single to put out back then...) I am changing the song to that. A few here for your perusal: "Captain Lou" - NRBQ (a tribute to their manager Captain Lou Albano...not so weird until you get to Lou's guest vocal; he goes off on the kind of ranting and raving he did as a "heel" wresting manager) "Flakes" - Frank Zappa (there are more bizarre Zappa songs out there, but this one features a good Bob Dylan impersonation by guitarist Adrian Belew that adds to my enjoyment of it) "The King of Fuh" - Brute Force (song is a borderline profane pun, in the vein of jokes like "sofa king screwed", etc) "I Like Traffic Lights" - Terry Jones "Henry Kissinger" - Eric Idle (two songs by Monty Python members) "The Martian Boogie" - Brownsville Station (they were known for including humorous ditties on their albums, and this one might be the weirdest)
At the age of 14 in 1967m I flipped over the Turtles hit "You Know What I Mean" and got the shock of my life with song called""Of Rugs And Woods And Flowers". A must listen.
Great picks 👍 I notice you slipped "Johnny Carson" into the playlist on Patreon- don't even get me started on all their weird songs haha. "Do You Like Worms," "Cabin Essence," "She's Goin' Bald," "My Solution,"... it's endless. We'll get Glen on our side one day, lol. Excited for the CD exchange, I have faith he'll like Ween!
My brother had that Beatles single with "You Know My Name" on it. He loved that song. I loved U2's "Zooropa", and the song "Numb". I liked that U2 was doing something different. My favorite song on that album was "Lemon".
Whoopee Larry..I won’t be able to sleep tonight, not because I am so excited to see you..I am aging nightmares about the albums you are going to me… weirdest 45 I ever bought was They’re Coming To Take Me Away…see you tomorrow Larry😁😁😁😁glen
Here's 10 highly challenging tracks (All can be found on TH-cam) for you to try to get through. The ones without a description are beyond describing: • Sandra Bernhard w/Butthole Surfers -- Barracuda (nobody involved in the making of this remembers why this Heart cover was recorded as a planned single, nor why it is sung in some language that is definitely not English, but they all agree that they hated it and that is why it was never officially released) • Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers -- Heartbreakers Beach Party • Coven -- Satanic Mass (The entire Lord's Prayer recited in reverse. Available on 8-track!) • J. Geils Band -- No Anchovies, Please! • The Damned -- Lovely Money extended version (to showcase the hilarious comedy routine by Bonzo Dog Band member Vivian Stanshall that makes up the last half of this oddball novelty number, they not only bring many of the instruments down in the mix when he begins to speak, but on the original vinyl the speed abruptly switches from 45 RPM to 33⅓ RPM midway through!) • Chris Mars -- Gymnasium Blues • Joan Jett and the Heartbreakers -- Cherry Bomb dance mix (Imagine if the runaways had been fronted by a histrionic Lucille Ball) • Iron Maiden -- Mission From 'Arry • Stackridge -- Hold Me Tight (The Beatles song, only it's arranged and played like the Wings song) • Ani DiFranco & Jackie Chan -- Unforgettable
Good video Larry I have to say I like the sparks cover of I wanna hold your hand. Yes it is a bit ridiculous but like you it grew on me. Would have been cool if they had made a Beatles cover album back then but I guess they were very busy doing other things (wouldn't have wanted all the songs in that very over the top orchestral style though haha)
I was 6 when You know my name came out and my older brother gave me his single and I thought it was hilarious. I kept playing it at different speeds to make it even more funny. At the time we had a next door neighbour who was from England and she sounded exactly like one of the voices. After all these years I still love it !
I would like to make mention of the song "Instruments Of Destruction" by obscure Canadian 80s power metal band NRG. This track can be found on the original soundtrack to the 1986 animated film The Transformers. The singer sounds so much like legendary Megadeth frontman/guitarist Dave Mustaine that this crazy song tricks you into thinking it's actually Megadeth. But it really isn't them. It's a completely different band that changed its name to Damn Cheetah. They had no Megadeth involvement whatsoever. However, this banger perhaps did inspire Mustaine and Megadeth to write and record its biggest hit to date "Symphony Of Destruction" from their blockbuster 1992 album Countdown To Extinction.
I like Whodunit and Mother. They fit in with the sequence of their respective albums and are fun. Another: the entire King Crimson album Discipline is wonderfully weird, but especially Indiscipline (I repeat myself when under stress.....)and Thela Hun Ginjeet (This is a dangerous place).
Anything from late Japanese electronic music composer Tomita would fit into this category imo. Or Star Wars score composer Meco. Both of those guys went over the top with their bizarre brand of music.
Without getting into Beefheart and obscure psychedelic music there's some B-sides and maybe unreleased stuff. The B-side of Jimi Hendrix's "Burning of the Midnight Lamp" is "The Stars That Play with Laughing Sam's Dice". It's alleged to be a drug song because it might mean "STP with LSD". Not one of his best. One of my favorite songs of the '70s is Andy Pratt's "Avenging Annie". It's offbeat, but Roger Daltry covered it. I like The Flaming Lips song from the '90s "She Don't Use Jelly."
I'm listening (voluntarily) to Leng Tch'e by Naked City right now. I guess I win this round eh? 😱 Will watch later to see if my comment holds up... Hey, surprised Wild Honey Pie didn't make the cut!
Three I like - Comfortably Numb - The Scissor Sisters ( Both Roger Waters & David Gilmour championed it & they rarely agree ) Ring Of Fire - Wall Of Voodoo & Tomorrow Never Knows - The Chameleons.
I was listening to a playlist of various songs a few weeks ago and "You Know My Name" came on... to my surprise my wife hated it and also had no idea who it was, she's arguably just as much of a big beatles fan as me which made it funny how that song passed her by. Anyway, her love for the beatles didn't change her mind and she still hates it 😅
Sometimes outstanding artists record a few songs too many. Your list gives food for thought. Punk Genesis? Neil Young as an electronic musician? U2 as a hip hop performer? A musician who has achieved commercial success dreams of an avant-garde work, on the other hand, someone known for avant-garde experiments dreams of commercial success. Was there anyone, the only one in the whole world, who was allowed to do anything? Yes! David Bowie.
I definitely had the same opinion about The Fly, as did many others, when it was released….. although I did like Numb when I first heard it 😊 The Fly became one of my favourites but I couldn’t get into the whole album.
That’s a brilliant ditty! Paul hits that high not that’s fun to listen to. And I like the guitar slap at the beginning. I’d be super proud if I wrote that one.
THAT is the song I meant, ha ha. I haven't been into U2 for years, so I'm going to change the song to Numb. The Fly was also a strange single release back in the day but Numb (from Zooropa) was also an odd single to put out at the time. Thanks.
@ Yeah the way you were describing the song, it sounded like you were describing Numb, not The Fly. But then you said off Achtung and lead singer Bono. I figured it was The Fly since Numb was off Zooropa and Edge sang lead. Also the opening of Zoo Station sounds like 4 men chopping down the Joshua Tree.
I don't like Keen Akrore Larry,to me it's just Paul showing off,a bit of filler and Paul showing the world that he could drum and I don't like the drums on most of the McCartney album, not because Paul played badly but because of the way the drums were recorded,I believe Paul only used one mic to record with and to me it shows,to me the drums are the worst thing about the album. Bob
"Miss Gradeko" from Synchronicity is way worse, and far more annoying, than "Mother" is. Stewart Copeland is no singer. He should have stuck to drumming than crooning juvenile fairytales. Thank God the very next track and overall best song on the album follows and makes us quickly forget about that piece of second grade shight.

@@AnthonyKiyola I thought it was strange also but like Numb grew to love it fairly quickly.

Jonathan Round's cover of the Stones "Sympathy For The Devil" is a forgotten and bizarre version of the classic hit.
Right now I’m drawing a blank, but I know a few of those songs you mentioned so I definitely do agree.😊
My brother had that Beatles single with "You Know My Name" on it. He loved that song.
I loved U2's "Zooropa", and the song "Numb". I liked that U2 was doing something different.

Hawkwind and their Version of Gimme Shelter, Karel Gott and His Version of Paint It Black. And Cindy and Bert, Der Hund von Baskerville (Paranoid)

Pearl Jam: 'Hey Foxymophandlemama, That's Me' (also known as 'Stupidmop').
I almost included that one. I actually really like it but it is pretty freaky.
Hurt By Cash. Feels like life coming apart.
Think it's about time I check out Sparks
Yes! I love Sparks, check them out, you wont be disappointed!
‘Down Came The Rain’ by Mister Murray is another fav ‘bonkers’ song. 😂
Anything from late Japanese electronic music composer Tomita would fit into this category imo. Or Star Wars score composer Meco. Both of those guys went over the top with their bizarre brand of music.

I actually like the over the top eccentricity of "Mother" by The Police. It's certainly...different.
My 2 weird songs additions might not even count as songs, but I personally would add FX and Blow on a Jug by Black Sabbath.
The Adventures of Greggery Peccary from Studio Tan (Frank Zappa). One of my fav ‘bonkers’ songs…….😂
22 Going On 23 by the Butthole Surfers. Easily one of their most bizarre (and creepiest) songs.
I'm listening (voluntarily) to Leng Tch'e by Naked City right now. I guess I win this round eh? 😱 Will watch later to see if my comment holds up...
Hey, surprised Wild Honey Pie didn't make the cut!
Have you ever listened to Kurt Cobain’s “Beans?” It’s weirder than all these Tracks combined
Nope, and don't think I want to, ha ha.
@@canadianstudmuffin Your ears have been blessed

Not sure what those have to do with crazy songs, but thanks.
Interesting , one might say crazy cover songs.

You could pick a bunch of Paul tunes, and maybe Wiggle Wiggle by Bob Dylan. Haha
I actually thought of that Dylan song, ha ha!

Speaking of The Beatles, let’s not forget Why Don’t We Do It In the Road.
I love that song.

Paul hits that high not that’s fun to listen to. And I like the guitar slap at the beginning. I’d be super proud if I wrote that one.
I really like Synchronicity and Mother is one of my best song on the album. Is it really Sting who sing? dont sound like him at all.
No, the vocals on Mother are by Andy Summers.
Cream has two of these on their "Disraeli Gears" album. "Blue Condition" and "Mother's Lament". The Who have a few, like "Cobwebs And Strange".
Tusk is the end result of too much money, time and cocaine.
It’s very far removed from Rumors but does have some good songs.
I am surprised you didn't choose Numb by U2 over The Fly. If you want to talk about Edge rapping. I FEEL NUMB!
