When I hear Johnny Marr play a Smiths song with one instrument being his guitar I can actually hear every other instrument including Morrissey's vocals on some other plane. Like you can hear the rest of the song as a ghost while his guitar resurrects the other parts just for a brief moment and then he stops and the rest of the ensemble is laid back to rest. Just fucking beautiful.

I love Johnny not just because of his music but because he's so humble and amazing at the same time he doesn't show off at all and he admits to making mistakes it's just great to have a musician like that
But why so greedy with his fellow Smith members. Very unfortunate, has lowered my view of him and the other $$ grubbing Smith. Great music, but the patina and brilliance negatively affected by their poor characters
Answered every question in depth and succinctly. The perfect interview. The guy putting the questions was excellent too. A text book affair for guitar freaks.
Talented and Genius are words that dont even come close to describing this man. Every time he starts playing, my hair stands on end and I just do not want him to stop. Superb.
What a guy, an inspiration. People understandably say he is modest, but actually he just seems a really decent person who has time for everyone despite all the success and achievement.
That's what i was thinking....am i seeing a 16 year old play in a garage or an elderly man teaching his sons...whay a great observation ans how deep!!! Thanks
So refreshing to see a guitarist being a musician not a musical athlete playing a million notes a second that no one cares about. Creating actual brilliant music rather than showing off. Awesome dude.
Been a fan since the mid 80's, his songs and riffs stick with you for life. They become part of your soul, he's very melancholic due to being Irish Celt. But that works towards his creativity and inspiration, thank God. Very humble and very honestly true.
Gladiator0719 Spot on. He has said before that he tries to turn daydreams into sound. As a guitar player I love the melancholic, dreamy type music that he comes up with. It moves my soul. It reminds me of that state I sometimes get when I'm in bed, sleeping but on the verge of being awake, when things become very clear, almost as if you understand what's important in life before it gets swamped by the rush and humdrum of the day!
His music is an extension of his soul and his way of expressing himself more than any other way like an artist painting a picture he does it through his guitar
Some girls are bigger than others riff came about while Johnny was watching Clint Eastwood. So my favourite guitar player wrote my favourite piece of music whilst watching my favourite actor😀........Thanks for this.. the best interview I think I've seen with JM

never been a Smiths fan, but as a music and guitar nut Johnny is a modern elder-statesman of guitar. Read his book recently, such a great story and he must have been somehow blessed to do what he has done. an amazing life and long may he continue
Imagine being Johnny Marr and having this great party trick that's basically Playing this charming Man perfectly. Man i love how this guy is so nonchalent.
I just discovered Marrs music a few days ago. It was after listening to a live version of getting away with it and it really wowed me. Everybody everywhere has called him a genius but I could never get past the Smiths phenomenon. I can't believe what I've been missing. His guitar sometimes sounds like really complex celtic music. Thats the thing of it for me. Celtic music. Irish folk music - plugged in. He has some sort of connection to it. He must
For those who are wondering: from a fan who ran into Johnny two days ago at the airport for his US tour, has confirmed that LPB will be a release sometime soon. If you've been following him the last 6 years or so at least, the new colors coincide with the new record.
my jag tremolo bar broke and they replaced the assembly for free, just wanted to mention it cause I think it's one of the reasons Fender is still a great guitar brand, if not nowadays 'the brand', they take care of their customers and musicians. Johnny Marr, no words, he's the real deal!
Outstanding video listening to this great man and not just his music , all guitarists should watch this and listen to what he has to say, what a master, craftsman and gentlemen..
Fantastic interview! wow this guy is so inspirational and super humble. Man, also how great is this hair cut? Johnny Marr and Paul Weller: haircut legends.
And yet, he can mention "that pentatonic thing", rip out a run that Clapton or Page would be proud of - and then casually mention that he knew that wasn't right for the band he was in.
played before smiths in 84 j. marr and the rest of band gentlemen, they helped us carry gear in,couldn't be nicer and they played...out of this world. first time i ever heard how soon is now...blew me away.
Think I‘ve watched this outstanding video a hundred times now... I LOVE IT! Johnny is such a good and interesting guy, could listen all day to what he has to say...! And that lovely lake placid blue Jaguar 😳😊😍 Should get one....😎
Johnny Marr is an absolute guitar genius for bell like melodies, I love learning his stuff it opens up your playing it’s a must imo. I play blues it’s what I like but I do force myself to learn other styles as you can use it to boost your own playing.
I always wondered if Johnny Marr could play bluesy. At 14.44 he proves he most certainly can, very well. I admire his resistance to convention when so many other players settle for it.
What a legend! Interesting, though, that in another video he says that he wrote 'Girl Afraid' on a red ES-355 right after he wrote 'Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now', not on a green Telecaster..
Make it affordable enough and I will buy. Blue is my favorite color. I only buy guitars based on what they look like. I don't care what they sound like. lol j/k
It's fun to watch him pull that strap back up over and over in between great playing and great answers lol Seriously though Johnny Marr is amazing! Great interview.
Credit to you Johnny for remembering all those riffs. That country lane late at night that you spoke about is a long, winding and twisty one with lots to look out for ... just like your riffs.
I think when he talks about the Eastwood movie (16:40) and the disco scene it's "Pigeon Toed Orange Peel" by Lalo Schifrin -from the movie Coogan's Bluff
In an older video, he said he wrote Girl Afraid on the Gibson guitar Stein bought him in New York, the same guitar he wrote Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now on

This Charming Man guitar part is one of the most beautiful guitar parts ever conceived, hands down.
plenty to pick from The Smiths catalog... that band, I swear, I'll never grow out of...
Definitely
along with God Save The Queen/No Future
are you honestly being serious? really?
Its the Some Girls riff for me.... Always has been. Not the biggest fan of the song actually, but the guitar melody is fucking beautiful
The melody for Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others is one of, if not, the best guitar riffs ever written
Nope we are the pigs wasp solo by Bernard Butler

"Able to play the sound of my feelings". Lovely way to put it.
Gives me the shivers
Just brings tears to the eyes. The man has such beauty in his fingers.
Like to be reborn with Johnny's fingertips.
When Johnny plays it goes straight into my soul. It has since 1984. He’s the musician of my lifetime.
Answered every question in depth and succinctly. The perfect interview. The guy putting the questions was excellent too. A text book affair for guitar freaks.

You can tell feelings were brought back when playing this charming man
What a guy, an inspiration. People understandably say he is modest, but actually he just seems a really decent person who has time for everyone despite all the success and achievement.
It's like he is 16 and 60 at the same time

Perfectly right
Alejandro García-Puente Nah you're kidding. He can't be 60. In fact, he looks so much younger than Morrisey.
LOL!!!
You're close but the point is: He's immortal. That's a credible classical guitar piece right there.

100% agree
I hope it's cause he's Irish cause then I'm in luck
Johnny is a genius. There is no other word to describe this guy...
I can watch Johnny play guitar all day.
His music is an extension of his soul and his way of expressing himself more than any other way like an artist painting a picture he does it through his guitar
I've played guitar for a few decades and Johnny Marr has probably forgotten more awesome riffs than I'll ever know. Dude is nothing short of epic.
Oh shit he answered my question! Nice! ❤
Laura, nice one!
It was a great question!
good question... I know what you meant on it... Marr is so friggin cool...
Rock on Laura! So rad. Good question and he elaborated on it for a while.
thanks guys! yeah I loved how he ended up rambling about it a bit
:-D
hearing Johnny Marr do a fret stub and buzz should give us all hope.
Johnny seems like a real genuine, down to earth guy. He just kind of talks like a normal person, not some out of touch rock star. I really like him.

I didn't know Johnny is such a great lead guitarist. Those Bluesy licks were great! He has great FEEL .
He is a Rory Gallagher fan
Johnny Marr hands down one of my favorite geniuses🙏 one of the best to bless a guitar🤙
Great interviewer and great interview too, Johnny's always quite candid and welcome to discuss his methodology of creating music and excellent tunes.
Great stuff. I could listen to him play all day. "Last Night I Dreamt" and "That Joke" are melancholy masterpieces.
Johnny talking about why he likes the guitar and then going straight into Some Girls is pure magic
Oh Johnny you magnificent musical Beautiful Genius. Thank you Johnny and fender.
What a legend. Love his guitar tones.
Great to hear a guitarist with such insight.
What a player, his tone sounds so good here
I love his enthusiasm for the guitar, every time i watch him in an interview i instantly play my guitar and miss what he says haha.

Johnny Marr is a great player. No wasted notes.
Fantastic interview! wow this guy is so inspirational and super humble. Man, also how great is this hair cut? Johnny Marr and Paul Weller: haircut legends.
Watching Johnny Marr play guitar is like watching Picasso paint. A non blues pentatonic genius!
And yet, he can mention "that pentatonic thing", rip out a run that Clapton or Page would be proud of - and then casually mention that he knew that wasn't right for the band he was in.
please no, not Picasso. Marr is a true genius, like Bouguereau

Marr playing a Fender Jaguar = Sublime.

This Charming Man
Every time his strap falls I get anxious
Righttt, I wanted him to just be like "oh forget it" and take it off lol
Hopefully he'll design a strap as amazing as his Jag to stay on.
oh thank god someone else was thinking it
I was also waiting for Johnny to take the strap off and say “sod this”
he's really uncomfortable out there and it irks me
So beautiful of this Jaguar and its jiggling sound.
To end with “That joke isn’t funny anymore” .... my favorite Smiths song, sheer brilliance. Glad it’s one of Johnny’s favorites too.
Me too, I never get tired of it
That little bit from some girls...... Is 1 off the prettiest pieces music I have heard, so simple but sublime.
Johnny Marr Jaguar in blue please Fender :)

Watched this and I totally change my views towards you...Top chap.
It's fun to watch him pull that strap back up over and over in between great playing and great answers lol
Seriously though Johnny Marr is amazing! Great interview.
It would be cool to sit down and talk to him myself. A kindred soul of sorts I feel. Thanks Johnny!
Credit to you Johnny for remembering all those riffs. That country lane late at night that you spoke about is a long, winding and twisty one with lots to look out for ... just like your riffs.
What a genuinely cool person.
We were at The Great Escape - gutted we didn’t go see this 😢
